Drug Smuggling Schemes Around The World

First Posted: 01/29/11 11:32 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:30 PM ET

This week's discovery of a "pot catapult" being prepped as a way of transporting marijuana across the Arizona-Mexico border is only the latest in a serious of ingenious methods employed by drug dealers and international traffickers.

Earlier this month, Colombia police captured a carrier pigeon trying to fly into a jail with marijuana and cocaine paste strapped to its back, while last December, a German man reportedly disguised his marijuana plant with festive ornaments and twinkling lights. Dogs, snakes and even sharks are just a few of the animals also found to have acted as drug mules.

Take a look at some wacky drug-smuggling methods around the world here:

Earlier this year, Colombia police captured a carrier pigeon trying to fly into a Bucarmanga jail with marijuana and cocaine paste strapped to its back. Carrying a package with 40 grams of marijuana and 5 grams of a paste containing cocaine, the bird -- which police believe had been trained by inmates or accomplices -- appeared to be unable to successfully clear the prison walls.

I didnt see the well documented and proven scheme where Reagan bush using the CIA in trading weapons for cocaine with south American rebels, then transporting the coke into the US through military bases to be distributed and sold on the streets.

Deperate comments, from people who need a fix. They will defy logic and reason, push society aside...just...to...have...their high.

Still not getting it, are ya pro-legalization crowd?

Was No. Is No. Is going to be...still...NO.

Please save the "Oh ya *shudder*..it'll be *cold chills*...legal...*long night of desperation with your addiction*...one day" comments.

The NOW reality: Still not legal, still gonna pay fines....still gonna go to jail.

What is this? The article is about the smugglers, not the users. The cunning methods the smugglers use to make money. What is all this about addiction? Are you addicted to tobacco and alcohol? They are the most addictive substances in common use. People do not get addicted to pot,

The War on Drugs will never be Won, and everybody knows it. The only reason it is in place is because of the money it generates, not for us, we just pay for it.

International volleyball matches between USA & mexico, using the border fence as the net. Saves the teams the hassle of getting visas and stuff.

Gotta keep lotsa spare balls handy tho, its easy to lose them in the mesquite grass on the Arizona side.

They are cheaper in Mexico, so I guess thats the best place to source them. The yanks can slip a few bucks through the fence to compensate the mexicans.

Never any thought into why we create bogus sumptuary laws that manufacture this type of conduct. Phony jobs for a phony world is my opinion.

"In 2008, former England cricket player Chris Lewis was charged with attempting to smuggle cocaine ..."

Of course he was arrested. That's just not cricket.

The animal abuse is disturbing for sure. Other methods were very clever. The inspectors were on the ball; who inspects bulges in snakes? The catapult is a time tested method for sending things over walls, environmentally friendly and quiet. Now are happy we spent millions building walls? I recently saw a story of two teen girls that can scale the wall in about 24 seconds.
