Al Jazeera Egypt

Egyptian state TV reported Sunday morning that the Al Jazeera office in Cairo is being shut down and Al Jazeera reporters are losing their press credentials in Egypt.

Al Jazeera correspondent Dan Nolan tweeted the news at about 11 a.m. local time, adding that Al Jazeera's licenses were revoked, per state media.

Nolan quickly added, "Don't worry we'll still report what's happening in #Egypt no matter what new restrictions they put on us."

Another Al Jazeera employee Evan Hill put the news this way: "State TV announces Al Jazeera's broadcasting license and press cards are being revoked. Our bureau is packing up."

Al Jazeera released a statement on Sunday that it "strongly denounces and condemns the closure of its bureau in Cairo by the Egyptian government." The network says it received notification from authorities on Sunday morning that information minister [Anas al-Fikki] had ordered the suspension of Al Jazeera. It also vowed to "continue its strong coverage regardless."

Mubarak not intending to leave until a large number of people have been killed. Still it's not clear what Mubarak is really up to.
JUST GET THE HELL OUT.

Al Jazeera unavailable in U.S. and Egypt. Hmm. Wonder what that means. And I wonder what will be done in the streets of Cairo when there is no more coverage. It looks like Mubarek is holding out for a blood decision.

Is it not a rather sad state of affairs where you feel that you cannot trust any of your domestic news cable companies to deliver accurate information and you have to go to an international provider ?

Now I understand how a Soviet citizen must have felt when all she could read or watch was Pravda.

This kind of stuff is the resulting behavior of a leader in his last gasps of power...It will only empower and help the protestors to carry on to end Mubarak's rule.

Think about this idea. Everybody knows that it is days or months for Mubarak. This is the legal situation, because elections are coming up. But the way the media has to play it is whether he survives or not. Making it seem like a longer term situation. But it is not a conspiracy or anything else, it is just the way we are used to thinking. The longer struggle is what happens to the possibility for democracy and economic improvement for all the people in the area. And this plays out in what can be done to get the governments in all these countries to wise up.

This is the hand of the US government operating through the Egyptian state. Why not? They've already blocked it in the US.

There's more work to be done in terms of getting the US media on the ball.

Why are major US media orgs using the term “President” for Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak?

American taxpayers need to know the true nature of the dictatorship they are forced to fund.

Who lost the Egyptian revolution? MSNBC and BBC.
Who won the Egyptian revolution? Aljazeera English.
It's time for Kieth Olberman to join AJE.
Maybe some of his associates, too.
AJE seems to be offering an accurate, balanced account of the story.

Wow, al jazeera's getting press credibility now . How stupid are the Egyptians?

Fail, Al Jazeera is easily one of the best new organizations on the planet, simply because they don't cow tow to western wishes doesn't make them a bad news agency. Al Jazeera is easily less biased than Fox and MSNBC.

Even if I agreed with you about Israel, how is that Obama's fault? The country was established in 1948, many years before he was born. It is not the job of the POTUS to go around deciding which countries should exist and which should not. I'm not a big fan of the Israeli government or military, BTW.

Al Jezeera is a mouthpiece for arabic secular repression and islamic fundamentalism , I wonder how it now feels for them to be swiped with the same hard arm of the peninsula that they themselves promote. Bet it doesn't feel so great. Welcome to the rest of the world al jezeera. You can't have it both ways. Freedom from tyranny, all tyranny, for everyone, everywhere, every single second of every single day. Amen.

Seems to me it's a counterproductive impotent move. It's not going to change what is happening or what gets reported. If anything it strengthens the public perception of the value and separation of what Al Jazeera is reporting. You'd think the Mubarak government would want to be coming up with more substantive moves to get the country moving in a better direction.
