Australia Cyclone Warning Grips Flood-Ravaged North

Australia Floods

KRISTEN GELINEAU   01/31/11 11:39 PM ET   AP

SYDNEY — Authorities scrambled to airlift hospital patients from the path of a cyclone roaring toward waterlogged northeastern Australia and urged low-lying communities to evacuate because of potentially deadly flash floods.

Cyclone Yasi was expected to slam into the coast of Queensland state Wednesday as a Category 4 storm and dump up to three feet (one meter) of rain on communities already saturated from months of flooding.

"This storm is huge and it is life-threatening," Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said. "I know many of us will feel that Queensland has already borne about as much as we can bear when it comes to disasters and storms, but more is being asked of us – and I am confident that we are able to rise to this next challenge."

Yasi was barreling toward the Queensland state coast as a strong Category 3 storm with winds up to 137 mph (220 kph), but was expected to turn into a Category 4 storm with wind gusts up to 155 mph (250 kph) by Wednesday.

Bligh said the military would airlift 250 patients from the waterfont Cairns Base and Cairns Private hospitals to Brisbane, the state capital.

Although there were no mandatory evacuation orders yet, residents in waterfront and low-lying areas from the cities of Cairns to Townsville were being advised to leave.

Ian Stewart, the state's disaster coordinator, said many people were deciding on their own to evacuate and that he would discuss with mayors whether forced evacuations were needed.

"In reality, we would like people to get as far south as possible, as quickly as possible, without of course breaking the rules," he told reporters.

Another storm, Cyclone Anthony, hit Queensland early Monday but quickly weakened and did little more than uproot some trees and damage power lines.

Queensland already has suffered flooding since heavy rains started in November. The floodwaters killed 35 people, damaged or destroyed 30,000 homes and businesses and left Brisbane, Australia's third-largest city, under water for days.

Yasi is expected to strike farther north, sparing Brisbane and other towns that suffered the worst of the recent flooding. Still, Bligh said the storm's path could change and residents up and down the coast needed to prepare.

"We could see very powerful flash flooding that will be dangerous and potentially deadly," said Bligh, who described the storm as one of the largest and most significant cyclones the state has ever seen.

Hamilton Island off Queensland began evacuating some tourists on Monday and other resort islands were considering doing the same, Bligh said. Some nursing homes along the coast were evacuating, and residents of low-lying areas were urged to leave their homes until the storm has passed.

"We're telling anyone in the low-lying areas they need to be moving today and find another place to go to," said Val Schier, mayor of the northern Queensland city of Cairns.

Stewart said residents should be prepared with flashlights, food and water.

"Please make no mistake: this storm is a deadly event," Stewart said. "Now is the time to act."

best of luck to all of you in australia facing this new disaster. if your government would give me a visa, i'd be coming over to help in any way i could, and then i'd stay in australia until i die. in my travels, i'v e met a few aussies, and they are always so much fun.

People could help by simply going to Australia on a temporary visa and volunteering for a few weeks, but to stay on for the rest of your life as a result might be a problem because there are already too many people in Australia in view of available land and water resources.

And here I am on the NSW/Vic border breathing in the pungent smell of bushfires to our south.

Be safe my friends to the north.

Please do not give any more trouble to Australia. What happened that was more than enough.

It's so disappointing....It already is a Category 3 cyclone, and is likely to intensify to a Category 4, with gusts of wind expected to reach 160mph.

Hang in there! We have destructive storms over here in WA, with people warned to close curtains and remain away from windows. Hail, wind and lightening in Southern Gascoyne and the Goldfields. Meekatharra and surrounds are in for a walloping tonight.

I'm disappointed in the citizens of Australia and how they handled the floods let alone the hurricanes. Where were the looters carrying out big screen TV's and other electronics like they do in the US. As Rahm and barak have said they wasted a great disaster

They were there, it's just you couldn't see them because they were underwater, having to scuba dive and snorkel into the shops.

Off to shops to buy batteries, food, water - we are in Cairns and the cyclone is on it's way. We moved from Sydney, so this will be a baptism by water...

They cannot catch a break, can they?
06:54 PM on 01/31/2011
The flooded areas are the major coal-mining regions of Australia. I hope that the Australians will finally realize that the predicted climate changes are here and that coal mining and burning contribute to greenhouse gases and should be stopped.

I almost wish they'd stay flooded, given the deadly consequences to us all and the planet that will come from further use of coal.

I have to agree with you there. This would accomplish 2 things, helping to curb climate change and, as they are all large open pit mines, they would make excellent reservoirs in preparation for the dry season.

Wow, where is your compassion for the people who have lost family (not anywhere near a coal mine) and the people in Victoria (south of the country) who've lost their homes?

There is now an upgraded category 5 cyclone (think Katrina) off the coast - and you're hoping that everyone in my country gets taught a lesson? While there are bushfires raging? If we had said something like that when Katrina was on it's way - we would have been called subhuman.

Where's your empathy Larry?
