Huntsman In The Hunt

WASHINGTON -- While President Obama is dealing with the pivotal foreign crisis of his tenure -- Egypt -- something crucial happened on the home front: A Republican contender emerged who could give him a real run in 2012.

I've spent some time with Jon Huntsman Jr. and can report that the former governor of Utah -- heir to a vast industrial fortune, a fluent Mandarin speaker and, as of today, the outgoing ambassador to China -- is a formidable political and personal talent. He is not well known but has a sky-high upside not unlike the man he's worked for.

Huntsman is a Mormon, a Utah native, a social conservative and a free-market-loving businessman -- all good credentials for a run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012 -- but he has worked hard and succeeded at defying the usual GOP stereotypes.

He is a culturally sophisticated, laid back guy with a winsome manner, progressive environmental views and a non-judgmental, socially tolerant air. When we met in DC two years ago, he picked the place: a hip-retro lunch counter joint in the Soho-style Adams Morgan part of town. The message: I am comfortable in a place where the waitresses have rings in unusual places.

Put it this way: As governor of Utah, he was as much Park City and Sundance as Church of the Latter Day Saints.

Huntsman's plan for a '12 run -- farther along than outsiders think -- is made easier by the single fact that he and his family, which made its fortune in pre-formed plastic consumer items (egg crates and McDonalds cases), is worth BILLIONS. He could self-finance to beat the band.

He is essentially Mitt Romney with a more user-friendly personality, way more money, international experience and a Western base. Huntsman also did not champion an Obama-style health-care plan.

Huntsman has Ivy-League ties back East, including close relations with the University of Pennsylvania, whose Wharton School he attended and which features as a premier offering the Huntsman Program, which combines liberal arts and business education for Penn's top students.

Huntsman's friends are starting a PAC and he has a key DC ally in Rep. Jason Chaffetz of Utah, a shrewd and rising GOP star who served as his gubernatorial campaign manager back in 2004.

Huntsman is a low-tax, anti-regulatory Republican of the current GOP school, and his Mormonism is deep. He is pro-life, but conveys a sense of moderation on that and other social issues. His affable, familiar style and worldliness make him a cross-over possibility in the age of Obama.

When I had lunch with him the other year it was clear what he was up to -- figuring out how and whether he could run. This was pre-Palin and pre-Tea Party.

The question is whether he has the toughness and the conservative cred to make his way through the minefields of the early conservative vetting process in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. But if he does and if he somehow ends up as the GOP candidate, then Obama should look out.

If he gets that far, Huntsman will be very much for real.

How much did Huntsman help in facilitating trade negotiations for the home team while an ambassador to China? His last position can work against him just as much as he tries to promote it.

Huntsman worked for Obama. He worked under Hillary in the State Dept. Geithner represented the US on issues pertaining to economic concerns. If it works against Huntsman it also works against the party where the buck stops.

This just means he is going to have a rough time during the primaries and an even tougher time with the Tea Party.

Huntsman sounds like a bright, capable, worldly, reasonable, moderate, small-c conservative. This means he has virtually no chance of garnering the Republican nomination.

You are absolutely right. The current Republican base would rather go with a loopy loser as long as they spout the right platitudes and don't appear to be too smart. Being educated and intelligent is anathema among the current Republican faithful. How else could one explain the popularity of Palin, Beck, Limbaugh, Bachmann, etc.?

Mr. Fineman, I agree that this man would be a formidable challenger to the President but you didn't mention that his Mormonism is a huge downside for his chances. The GOP gave up the White House in '08 because the base of the party would not consider Romney. Had he been the nominee his poll numbers would have skyrocketed as we entered into the financial crisis that last month of the election. The race would have been far closer and the outcome a question. This tendency of the conservative Christian fundamentalist "cult' to look down its collective nose at another "cult" results in good capable men like Huntsman and Romney being defeated before they even run. And that is more than fine by me.

Geez, why do Repbublican politicans all have to have made their fortune in things like oil, munitions, and throw-away plastic packaging for fast food? Why can't they be software millionaires or public transit mavens or alternative energy magnates or recycling giants?

A Mormon cannot be elected President, and that includes Romney. I'm sure everyone will claim it's discrimination, but the truth of what Mormons believe will come out. Including that the Mormon religion is hierarchical, you cannot defy the orders of the Council and still be a Mormon. And no, it's nothing like JFK and the Catholic Church. US Catholics ignore the Pope now, did back then. Evangelicals say "Mormons are not Christians", and I agree with them. A Christian does not usurp Christ after the Resurrection and put him the New World, but the Book of Mormon does.

I suggest "Under the Banner of Heaven" for a reasonable overview of Mormonism.

Good post and good choice of book. I would qualify one thing and that is that the story behind "Under the Banner of Heaven" involved a double murder from two brothers who subscribe to a splinter group of the LDS known as the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints which I am sure you know

That's right. That's about half the book, and it's not fair to use that part to critique Mormonism. The other half is a reasoned history, the lurid story is to get you to read the book :-)

It's out, at least among us atheists. Most believers think that the First Amendment means religions are not subject to public scrutiny, or even rational evaluation. Bill Maher doesn't think that, he gives the facts on his show.

He's "culturally sophisticated, laid back guy with a winsome manner, progressive environmental views and a non-judgmental, socially tolerant air."

Um, that and the fact that he's educated makes him wholly unappealing to the GOP/Bagger base.

He is going to have to make a hard turn right to make it out of the primaries. He will also have a hard time with the evangelicals.

Yes it would. Its the new normal it seems, make as many outlandish statments as you can proving that you are the "most conservative" and then back track in the general elections.
