Banksy Oscars

LAist:

With Exit Through the Gift Shop (aka the Banksy movie) getting a Best Documentary Oscar nomination in the wee hours of Tuesday morning, in the wee hours one morning a few days later this large piece of street art showed up on La Brea at San Vicente, in the oft-used Mr. Brainwash space. There is, indeed, a Mr Brainwash signature next to the giant hoodie-shrouded Oscar statuette (at the end of a sidewalk red carpet, no less) and some showbiz-y busied Storm Troopers hanging around--err...hovering around from above, too.

I like how BANKSY can do things like spray a stencil, walk away, and then when stencil is found, even if it's large or small makes no claims of it being his,he has nothing to do with it once "it's up"!Ten years ago,BANKSY did a parachuting rat with a clothespin on its nose in Byron Bay,Australia,it was there for some 7 years before owners of theArts Factory Lodge property realized what they had, took it down in 08,and now want to sell it,and according to D.M.Auctioneers could be worth $500,000!It was done when BANKSY went to visit his Aussie Artist friend James DeWeaver, who had invited American Photographer Spencer Tunick "downunder" at the same time for a nude photo shoot. Both BANKSY and DeWeaver are in the Spencer Tunick Byron Bay Installation taken in 2001.Photo shoot of this is on DeWeaver's Website-jamesdeweaver.com

I don't know if this is Banksy or MBW or if they are one in the same, or if his intention is to make fun of the art world, thumb his nose at society or what. I love the art of Banksy whoever he is and whatever his intentions are. His work is relevant, poignant, makes socially conscious statements and is just inspiring. In this world of corporate bland and everyone stepping in line, a bit of guerilla art is a few steps away from the constant flux of cultural conformity. I love Banksy and think this looks like his work and I do think he is a genius.

The joke is on you, if you think so. It's not genius to point out the obvious.
He even makes fun of his sudden popularity. He blatantly laughs at the art world and MSM all of a sudden giving "street art" , a green light.

Yeah, he laughs all the way to the bank. Afterall, that's the "cool" thing to do.

Banksy, "Some people represent authority without ever possessing any of their own."

My next piece I will call the depoliticization of activism in order that the commodifcation of street art may be transmuted into gold.

You are correct; This was done by MBW in a location the he always paints.

He has also been using stormtroopers, in some of his work lately.
