CHARLESTON, South Carolina (Reuters) - In a small laboratory on an upper floor of the basic science building at the Medical University of South Carolina, Vladimir Mironov, M.D., Ph.D., has been working for a decade to grow meat.

A developmental biologist and tissue engineer, Dr. Mironov, 56, is one of only a few scientists worldwide involved in bioengineering "cultured" meat.

Even if it did pass the "yuck factor," which it clearly does not, this would remain a singularly awful idea. Why is it that humans, despite all evidence to the contrary, refuse to realize that if you screw Mother Nature, she's gonna screw ya back.

Wendell Berry said it best: "Whether we and our politicians know it or not, Nature is party to all our deals and decisions, and she has more votes, a longer memory, and a sterner sense of justice than we do."

I just watched the episode of Better Off Ted where their lab guys were trying to do this...

Seems like it's inevitable. With Earth's population inching toward 10 billion, how else will we continue to feed people with any regularity/consistency?

I honestly don't know how I feel about this. It could prevent unfathomable amounts of animal suffering and would without a doubt relieve the environment of a tremendous amount of pressure. Yet it seems unnatural and would alter the way we classify and view food.

As long as it's disclosed, I could be fine with it. If the do the masquerade bit, I would find it deceptive. And if some of that land surface devoted to raising reverted back to nature, that would be a plus.

Why wouldn't he try adding a vascular system or bath first ? I have thought about growing meat and I think I would start with an artificial heart and a dialysis machine in a swimming pool.

Probably a whole lot easier to produce mycoproteins like Quorn.

Interesting,... but I must wonder,... doesn't this sound like the beginning scene from some bad SyFy movie of the week?
