Egypt: Al Jazeera Signal Disrupted, Arab Channels Band Together In Support

Al Jazeera English

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 02/01/11 02:18 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:30 PM ET

Al Jazeera's signal across the Middle East is being disrupted in "on a scale it has not experienced before" as it covers the Egyptian revolution, the channel said on Tuesday.

Al Jazeera said that its signals on Egypt's Nilesat platform were blocked, and that its frequencies on other platforms from around the Arab region were "disrupted continually."

"We have been working round the clock to make sure we are broadcasting on alternative frequencies," an Al Jazeera spokesman said in a statement. "Clearly there are powers that do not want our important images pushing for democracy and reform to be seen by the public."

It was not immediately clear exactly how the signal is being disrupted, or if the Egyptian government was behind the disruptions. The government has cracked down intensely on Al Jazeera since the uprising began. The channel's bureau in Ciaro has already been shut down, and the government detained six Al Jazeera English journalists on Monday, confiscating their equipment.

Ten different channels in the Middle East have moved to support Al Jazeera by simulcasting its broadcasts on their own frequencies.

"Ten different channels in the Middle East have moved to support Al Jazeera by simulcasting its broadcasts on their own frequencies."

This really highlights how much the current revolution is technologically based. As long as we can maintain widely distributed media and, as much as possible, avoid giving dictators single hard targets, truth will continue to flow around the world. Kudos to all those stations for their support of AJ. Mubarak must be wetting himself. I love it.

The kind of presence which Aljazeera has all over the countries over information related to violence, protests, videos related to such incidents which are very explicit and therefore very strong on influencing people of any country, that's why Egyptian government is trying to block their presence currently as the scene going on there is beyond control. To watch uncensored videos of live protests violence follow this link. http://bit.ly/ePS6Rq

A rent-a-mob threw rocks at CNN's Anderson Cooper around 5am Cairo time this morning shouting pro-Mubarak and anti-Al Jazeera slogans.

Al Jazeera is a hero in all of this, in my opinion. And in the eyes of millions of freedom loving people everywhere for courageously shining the light on the darkness of brutal dictatorships.

God bless Al Jazeera - and ALL the dedicated journalists - who are bringing us the truth despite the risk of personal loss.

Actually he was in the middle of the anti Mubarak crowd when he was attacked.

Actually you are incorrect. He was standing on a balcony during the 5 am attack (Cairo time) and the youths throwing the rocks at him and Ben Wedeman were shouting pro-Mubarack slogans.

The later attack on Cooper down in the street was - according to Cooper himself - PRO-MUBARAK.

Documentable facts. Sorry, but you're wrong.

Al Jazeera is the WINNER since it tells the truth and sides with the noble aspirations of humanity.
The losers are all these Arab "leaders" who are corrupt and who are not accountable to their people. It is about time they go away, some to jail for stealing the wealth of the countries they are supposed to protect. The People of Tunisia and the People of Egypt have spoken and said: "WE ARE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANY MORE". More power to the people every where

Al Jazeera, Wikileaks, Facebook and Twitter have the Middle East oppressors on the back foot. How good it is to see the masses realise that the emperors have no clothes.
