Egypt News Today: Protesters Prepare For 'March Of A Million People'

CAIRO - Tens of thousands of people flooded into the heart of Cairo Tuesday, filling the city's main square as a call for a million protesters was answered by the largest demonstration in a week of unceasing demands for President Hosni Mubarak to leave after nearly 30 years in power.

Rivers of protesters arrived in Tahrir, or Liberation, Square at checkpoints guarded by protesters and the army, which promised Monday night that it would not fire on protesters.

The announcement was a sign that army support for Mubarak may be unraveling as momentum builds for an extraordinary eruption of discontent and demands for democracy in the United States' most important Arab ally.

"We are not going anywhere until Mubarak leaves," said Mohammed Abdullah, a 27-year-old aviation engineer.

Mubarak, 82, would be the second Arab leader pushed from office by a popular uprising in the history of the modern Middle East.

Soviet-era and newer U.S.-made Abrams tanks stood at the roads leading into Tahrir Square, a plaza overlooked by the headquarters of the Arab League, the campus of the American University in Cairo, the famed Egyptian Museum and the Mugamma, an enormous winged building housing dozens of departments of the country's notoriously corrupt and inefficient bureaucracy.

Working-class men in scuffed shoes and worn cloth pants stood alongside women in full-face veils who chanted, "The people want to bring down the regime!"

For days, army tanks and troops have surrounded the square, keeping the protests confined but doing nothing to stop people from joining. The guns of many of the tanks pointed out from the square.

Military spokesman Ismail Etman said the military "has not and will not use force against the public" and underlined that "the freedom of peaceful expression is guaranteed for everyone."
He added the caveats that protesters should not commit "any act that destabilizes security of the country" or damage property.

The protests appeared to be better organized on Tuesday. Volunteers wearing tags reading "Security of the People" said they were watching for government infiltrators who might try to instigate violence.

"We will throw out anyone who tries to create trouble," one announced over a loudspeaker.
Authorities shut down all roads and public transportation to Cairo, security officials said. Train services nationwide were suspended for a second day and all bus services between cities were halted.

All roads in and out of the flashpoint cities of Alexandria, Suez, Masnoura and Fayoum were also closed.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Ahram Online reports:

A spiritual leader of Somalia's Islamist Shebab rebels called for popular Egypt- and Tunisia-style revolts to topple the government.

Sheikh Jama Abdusalam said such uprisings would rid the war-wracked country of a government that he accused of serving Western interests.

"I am urging the people to carry out Egyptian- and Tunisian-style uprisings in Somalia," Abdusalam told Alfurqaan Radio, a Shebab mouthpiece.

Egypt's military rulers called for an end to strikes and protests Monday as thousands of state employees, from ambulance drivers to police and transport workers, demonstrated to demand better pay in a growing wave of labor unrest unleashed by the democracy uprising that ousted Hosni Mubarak's regime.

The statement by the ruling military council that took power from Mubarak appeared to be a final warning to protest organizers in labor and professional unions before the army intervenes and imposes an outright ban on gatherings, strikes and sit-ins.

Soldiers cleared out almost all the remaining demonstrators from Cairo's Tahrir Square, the giant traffic circle that was turned into a protest camp headquarters for the 18-day revolt. During more than two weeks of round-the-clock demonstrations at the square, protesters set up tents, brought in blankets, operated medical clinics and festooned the entire plaza with giant banners demanding removal of the regime.

Hundreds of Egyptian police have been protesting outside the country's Interior Ministry. They are demanding better wages and seeking to disassociate themselves from the deaths of protesters in the run up to the ouster of Hosni Mubarak from the Presidency.

Ahram Online reports:

A crowd of about 3,000 protesters, mainly lawyers and students, tried to march from Sanaa University to Al-Tahrir square in the city centre, where [Yemen President] Saleh's supporters have been camped since last week, but were prevented by security forces who erected barbed wire, witnesses reported.

In a move to manage the situation President Saleh halted constitutional procedures which may have allowed him to assume the presidency for life, and possibly pave the way for his son, the chief of the Republican Guard, to succeed him.

The New York Times reports:

Two generals sat down Sunday night to talk about their country’s future with seven of the revolution’s young organizers — including the Google marketing executive Wael Ghonim — and the young activists posted their notes on the meeting directly to the Internet for the Egyptian public to see.

“We all sensed a sincere desire to preserve the gains of the revolution and unprecedented respect for the right of young people to express their views,†two of the young organizers, Mr. Ghonim and Amr Salama, wrote in their Facebook posting, with the disclaimer that they were speaking only for themselves. They noted that the generals spoke without any of the usual “parental tone (you do not know what is good for you, son),†and called the encounter “the first time an Egyptian official sat down to listen more than speak.â€

Here is a brain teaser. It would be a logistical task in the US to prepare for 1 million (which did not happen) people that need to pee once in a while. How does Egypt handle 2 million?

With a broken government, who or what is going to ensure a new and fair election. I wish the Egyptian people all the luck in the world that their votes for a new President will be heard.

Mubarak really has lost touch with his constituents. He should announce an emergency election for the Presidency and bow out after his successor has been elected by Egypt's disgruntled citizens. Or he could resign and turn the helm over to his Vice President, if he has one.

Wow this guy is really pushing it. Telling them that they are protesting because they have been manipulated by outsiders. Oh boy. That is not the way to leave gracefully.

That's the way it is in the Middle East. Mubarak does it. His successor will do it. It's always the fault of "outsiders", the U.S., Israel--anything but look in the mirror. Until that victimhood mentality changes, nothing else will.

Let's just hope that it will be a really new Egypt and not one controlled by murderous Islamic radicals, which in the short run, will be worse than what they have now. If Islamic radicals win, the beheadings will begin. Oh, and I almost forgot, they can't protest that!

Mubarak still has until Friday to leave with some grace and dignity, and maybe someday would be welcomed back as an elder statesman. I saw Nixon forgiven for MUCH LESS.
By Friday evening, the military will make the decision for him to get on a plane.

Obviously, this situation is relevant to U.S. citizens, maybe more so than we realize.

HEY MODS ....Between the new Live Comments Feed and the Twitter Feed, it's slowed down just loading the page to the point that it's almost not worth commenting - not to mention trying to get a regular comment typed and posted. .

It may surprise you at HuffPo, but not everyone has a Twitter account and some (like me) are too broke to afford a cell for anything but emergencies. And besides, I'm not interested in communicating in140 character bytes.
A lot of conversation on here is about the "two societies" the Corporate Plutocracy has created in the U.S. (OT for this article I think) .... the Haves and the Have Nots. So how about leaving room for those of us in the "have not" category to participate??

Obviously it's relative, I have a computer and internet access, but that's the extent of my "luxuries" and my access to this kind of forum. I know I'm not alone in wanting to be included in the conversation despite my low position on the economic ladder.

If anywhere near a million people wanted either of these things enacted, they could simply vote for them. But you see, most Americans are not far out Lefties.
