Brent Johnson, Rick DiPietro Fight: Goalies Brawl In Penguins-Islanders Game (VIDEO)

First Posted: 02/03/11 07:25 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:30 PM ET

With just 16.5 seconds remaining in the Pittsburgh Penguins' 3-0 victory over the New York Islanders on Wednesday night, an unexpected fight between the goalies broke out.

Pittsburgh's Matt Cooke collided with Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro, causing a few New York players to start a fight in the corner. That's when Penguins goalie Brent Johnson took off his mask, skated to the middle of the ice and challenged DiPietro to a brawl.

The goalies met in the Islanders zone and Johnson knocked out DiPietro with just one punch. Scroll down to watch the video.

How many times did Brent Johnson punch the guy after the first shot? After he was down and after he had clearly won.

That's and example of controlled agression and sportsmanship chop blockers in football, careless tacklers in soccer, headhunting pitchers in baseball etc could learn from...

Seriously? Did you watch the game or the video? One punch from Johnson. One.

If you didn't grow up watching hockey you probably don't get it. It's all part of the game. If you think it's barbaric you're probably right. It's the only sport where two players can settle their differences like men. If you don't like it then don't watch it.

For two points, without using an internet search, who said:

"During high school, I played junior hockey and still hold two league records: most time spent in the penalty box; and I was the only guy to ever take off his skate and try to stab somebody. "

No cheating!

What should a person say in their micro-bio

This is what I KNOW. There is no other major league sport in North America that actually sanctions and celebrates this type of violence. If fighting was not wrong why is there a penalty box although it is a slap on the wrist. The NHL has tried to tamp down on fighting in the past- and they need to do more. Who is going to listen to hockey fans justify what is little more the hoodlum behavior.

The hockey announcers were cheering on the fight-- what type of behavior is this- cheering on two guys engaged in assault and battery. Its poor taste and there is far too much of it. Many hockey players are thugs- who get paid to fight on ice.

"cheering on two guys engaged in assault and battery."
LOL. Hyperbole much?

"There is no other major league sport in North America that actually sanctions and celebrates this type of violence."

Because they are a bunch of Nancys

"Who is going to listen to hockey fans justify what is little more the hoodlum behavior. "
How cares?

"There is no other major league sport in North America that actually sanctions and celebrates this type of violence."

Um, boxing is one of the highest drawing pay per view sports in North America, followed closely behind by MMA and pro wrestling. Not saying I care much for any of them, or that pro wrestling is really a "sport" but it is violent and popular.

It's a sport, it has rules, and the rules are you get in a fight, you sit out for 5 minutes. Big deal...

isn't it crazy how "one" and "won" are pronounced the same but spelled so differently?

Hockey is the only sport not involving fighting that allows fighting. Can you imagine Federer and Nadal fighting at the net? It's why the NHL will always be bush league compared with the other sports.

Shows what you know- fighting only permitted in North American pro and semi-pro leagues not in college international or european leagues. Here's the NFL's Andre Johnson repeatedly punching a helmetless, fallen opponent in the head. He was not suspended and received only a small fine : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBT6MygnKKw .
Here's the NHL's Ben Eager throwing a single gloved punch at a standing opponent with a helmet on: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBxedLzuBgU. He was ejected, suspended for 4 games and fined. Please explain.
Here's a survey of sports professionals ranking ice hockey as the world's 2nd most demanding sport: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/sportSkills
and the NHL sells more tix than the NBA : http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/NHL-vs-NBA-Hockey-winning-in-attendance-fan-e?urn=nhl-123904 . So if the NHL is bush, what does that make the NBA?

It looks like DiPietro took Cooke down on purpose. Usually, in hockey, skaters won't touch the other team's goalie (a serious more (and penalty) as can be seen by how the Islanders pounce on Cooke)...if, however, a goalie is going to get physical with players, he totally deserves to get knocked to the ice by the other goalie
03:16 PM on 02/03/2011
Can't stand Cooke, but don't really like DiPetro ether... so meh. If only they could have taken each other out for the rest of the season...

I guess the NHL is trying to compete with professional wrestling now. Are they going to add "Professional" to the league title too? PNHL?

I'm sure the amazing diving spectacle that is soccer or the 3 hours of standing around and commercials that we call football is more your speed. Perhaps a nice game of shuffleboard, although those sticks they use to look awful scary... you know, maybe you should just snuggle up and reread your leather-bound copy of the "Beaches" script, it might be safer...

Forgive me for thinking that fighting doesn't have to be part of the NHL. These guys are the best in the world at what they do; play HOCKEY. If it's fighting you want to watch, there is always boxing or other fighting oriented sports.

Hard for me to believe that two goalies going at it isn't scripted to entertain the easily amused such as yourself.

Love the pat on the stomach from Johnson after DiPietro went down. The respect for the defeated is what makes hockey fighting palatable. They are both willing millionaires that know what the crowd likes, and they went into it like men. Not a great fight, but a terrific display of NHL chivalry and character. You don't see that in any other sport.

A sign of the decline of western civilization. Why dont they just put lions in there with them and see what happens?

Holy, exaggerate much!? How about heading over to watch the shenanigans in the Congress or Senate, or Fox News if you really want apocalyptic 'decline of W. Civ" stuff.

When Congress, the Senate or Fox news stands toe-to-toe in their respective chambers and brawl when it has no outcome of theoir duties, I will call my analogy exaggerated.

Oh, go watch some Anne of Green Gables reruns, the Grown-ups are busy.

Maybe if your a good girl I'll let you do some of the new cross stitch patterns my grandma just bought and perhaps then unwind from the stress of sewing in those adorable puppy dogs with a nice cup of Ovaltine, since I'm sure 'hot chocolate' offends you too.
