Sally Singer: The Real Problem With Michelle Obama's McQueen Dress Is 'That It Didn't Fit Her Well' (VIDEO, POLL)

First Posted: 02/03/2011 9:35 am Updated: 05/25/2011 6:30 pm

T Magazine editor-in-chief Sally Singer appeared on Thursday's "Morning Joe," where she discussed the renewed interest in Michelle Obama's style. Her main criticism of Michelle Obama's most controversial dress to date, was "that it didn't fit her well. It was then worn again by Mila Kunis and it should be worn by a diminutive younger woman." She continued, "It was the wrong dress for her. She's a beautiful woman and it didn't flatter her."

The conversation then turned to men's leggings and red carpet couture.

Quick Poll

Did Michelle Obama's McQueen dress fit her well?

Yes! What is Sally Singer talking about?

No--and that was my problem with the dress.

No, but that's the least of the dress's problems.

Sally Who?
12:00 AM on 02/11/2011
Sally is clearly wrong. The mix of bright red and mandarin orange looked beautiful against the First Lady's skin tone - absolutely stunning. No wonder the world loves her; she scintillates in every country's color that she wears around the world.

She looked STUNNING! She looked like a classy grown, sexy, REAL woman. Singer expects her to look like one of those emaciated "super models". "There is nothing super about them. Spoiled, stupid little stick figures with poofy lips who only care for themselves...." Eve..."The Incredibles".

The McQueen dress Kunis wore was NOT the same dress...BUT it did use the same material.
I will agree with an improper fit.
It appears to have been pulled from the back to avoid perhaps the original more plunging neckline.
The tailor is at fault...and whoever told her she looked great (besides her husband...he gets a pass because we don't want him in the dog house...love the commercial with Mary & Abe)should rethink their loyalty.

Sally Singer is part of the fashion industry that isn't accustomed to seeing clothing on women over a size 2.  Mrs. Obama looks wonderful and the dress fits her just fine.

Nothing fits Mrs. Obama well. she needs to look pulled together, not like she is some art student's senior project.

T Magazine? never heard of it or you, and Michelle looked fab. Go away with your petty opinion.
03:31 PM on 02/06/2011
I actually have the opposite opinion. I saw it on Mila Kunis and to me it didn't look nearly as good on her as it did on Mr. Obama. I thought it fit the occasion and she looked radiant. The dressed looked like it swamped Mila Kunis. But we all have opinions.

The woman wore a red dress to fit in with the traditions of the country that the dinner was for. In that picture it does appear to fit horribly but in other pictures it looks great. I know that the people that are invited to shows like these are "experts" but that certainly does not mean that they're always right. Mila Kunis did look good in the dress, but because she's so short it swallowed the whole lower half of her body. Our FLOTUS is tall and beautiful and that sort of dress should be worn by someone with some height. Lastly, was Oscar de la Renta born in the US? To me he just seems bitter that Mrs. Obama NEVER wears his clothes - I am pretty sure there's a reason for that (like he's a hater!).

Silly Sally Singer is delusional if she thinks that dress should be worn by someone more diminutive--someone more diminutive would have been swallowed up by that dress.

The dress isn't my taste (pattern or draping--not both), but it looked and fit fine.

I thought Mrs. Obama looked fabulous in the dress. I can only imagine that, in person, the impression would have been a show-stopper.

As for the comment that a woman with a smaller body should wear that dress, well, that's a personal problem.

Yeah, I agree with you on the "smaller body" comment. That is a mighty big print and a mighty bold color. It would overwhelm a shorty or a toothpick.

However, the dress didn't fit. I also don't like the way the sleeve slops off the shoulder. As we see in this photo, all our First Lady has to do is get photographed mid-blink and she ends up looking looped with her dress falling off.

If the FLOTUS wasnt tall and very attractive woman, no one would care about this.

If she wasn't married to the president, no one would know who she is, and certainly no one would care what she wore.

But she's our First Lady. She represents the United States. Basically, she works for us. She gets a lot of perks for being First Lady. I think we have the right to criticize her when her attire at formal State functions misses the mark.

She does not work for us. She represents us. No one gives her a check. What perks? She is not living a life of luxury. It is our good fortune that her heart causes her to be involved with so many great causes, and she does not have to do that. Mrs Obama is not America's knave/

misses the mark?!?! ... you know that the dinner was for the Chinese and why they chose a red coloured gown, right?!
02:52 AM on 02/05/2011
They're *still* talking about this dress?!?

Didn't Sally Singer used to work at Vogue before they s/h/*/t canned her?
01:14 AM on 02/05/2011
It fits fine- the problem is the dress is a hot mess.
