Dallas Weather Cancels Super Bowl-Bound Flights

Dallas Weather

DALLAS — A fresh snow storm in north Texas on Friday threatened to leave fans traveling to the Super Bowl stranded far from Sunday night's big game.

The snow caused about 300 inbound flights to be canceled at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport on Friday morning, and it shut down commercial flights at smaller Dallas Love Field.

It was one last blitz from nature against organizers of the big game, who have struggled all week with ice and freezing temperatures in north Texas.

Airlines were counting on a weather forecast that called for snow to end and temperatures to rise into Saturday.

American Airlines, the dominant carrier at DFW Airport, expected Friday to be the busiest day for travelers attending the Super Bowl between the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers. By midmorning, American and its regional affiliate, American Eagle, had canceled about half of their flights at DFW – including more than 300 arriving flights through early afternoon.

"We are putting extra effort to operate our flights in from Chicago today to keep the Super Bowl-oriented traffic moving," said Tim Smith, an American Airlines spokesman.

Smith said the airline was also giving more attention to 12 extra flights that it added from Pittsburgh and airports near Green Bay to handle people coming to the game.

If those flights are canceled, fans could have trouble getting to the game because later flights heading to Dallas from the two teams' regions are virtually full.

Southwest Airlines expected to cancel 60 flights Friday at its home airport of Dallas Love Field, although it wasn't clear whether much of that traffic was Super Bowl-related.

The city-run airport, which was shuttered earlier this week by an ice storm, closed its runways to commercial airliners again on Friday, although private planes continued to operate, said airport spokesman Jose Luis Torres.

"We've cleared one of the runways and we're clearing the taxiways," Torres said. He said Southwest flights were likely to resume by late morning or early afternoon.

Southwest planned to run four extra flights on Friday, with return legs Monday, between Dallas and both Pittsburgh and Milwaukee. It was unclear whether those flights would be affected by Friday's storm.

Visitors who were able to reach the Dallas area encountered icy roads, especially on secondary streets, that made driving hazardous.

Some VIPs have been unimpressed with efforts to deal with the ice and snow. Kurt Warner, a Super Bowl MVP quarterback for the St. Louis Rams, said the region looked unprepared to handle the bad weather.

The Super Bowl should always be played in Green Bay in their outdoor stadium the on the 2md Sunday in January.

Might as well have the game in Green Bay or Pittsburgh. At least there the folks know how to handle the snow/ice, etc. and are used to dealing with it. They had freezing weather in Pittsburgh and Chicago for the playoffs and the fans were having tailgate parties outdoors!

I understand that organizers have to move the sites where the game is played around the 52 States, but being that the game is played in winter, why do not they pick sunny places like florida or california'?
In Miami the crowds would be packing the beaches drinking margaritas on south beach or in Fort Lauderdale, instead of showeling snow and cancel flights due to "bad weather". bad? It is winter...what would you expect the weather to be now to call it good?
I'll go to the Superbowl if it is played in Florida next time, or else count me out....:)

Just got back from a business trip to Dallas. The roads down there are a mess, so even if you can get into the airport, getting around the area is beyond dangerous. Their snow and ice removal plan appears to be to wait for it to melt - they do not salt or plow their roadways, even their Interstates and other major highways. So even the major highways are ice-covered and most parking lots are skating rinks. Many restaurants and businesses have been closed for days since no customers nor staff could get there. Even the restaurant providing room service to my hotel closed early one evening and forced the hotel staff to scramble to get food for us stranded guests. While I am sure that this is a freakish situation that rarely occurs, the folks in North Texas are doing a horrible job dealing with it. New York/New Jersey will show everyone how to deal with winter weather when it is our turn in 2014.

They need a way for people who can't get there to "surrender" their tickets to locals who can. It would be a cryin' shame to have empty seats.

From now on, they should play the Superbowl evenly in the cold states and the so called warmer states, like Texas.

The Super Bowl should be permanently placed in New Orleans.

We've got an inch of ice under 8 inches of snow north of Dallas and the temp hasn't been above freezing since Monday.

The national weather service has lowered the high temps for Saturday and Sunday but night time temps will still be in the 20s (in the teens tonight). Some of the pubs and hotels near Arlington are running out of booze and food. The airports are full of stranded travelers and hotels are full near DFW and Love.
