Gisele: Sunscreen Is 'Poison'

First Posted: 02/04/2011 10:41 am Updated: 05/25/2011 6:30 pm

The Daily Mail reports that Gisele has once again said something that won't make everyone happy.

According to the paper, the 30-year-old Brazilian said of sunscreen: "I cannot put this poison on my skin...I do not use anything synthetic." The statement was made as she launched her own organic skin care line Sejaa.

She clearly hasn't always felt this way: see her past ads for Nivea Sun.

WATCH:

Tom Brady's wife is known for her earth mother proclivities. A little over a year ago she gave birth to their son Benjamin in a bathtub at home, having prepared for the pain with yoga and meditation because she "didn't want to be drugged up." And she then reported that childbirth didn't hurt one bit.

She then ruffled some feathers in August by saying that breastfeeding should be law. She told Harper's Bazaar UK, "Some people here [in the U.S.] think they don't have to breastfeed, and I think 'Are you going to give chemical food to your child when they are so little?'...I think there should be a worldwide law, in my opinion, that mothers should breastfeed their babies for six months."

She then took to her blog to write:

My intention in making a comment about the importance of breastfeeding has nothing to do with the law. It comes from my passion and beliefs about children. Becoming a new mom has brought a lot of questions, I feel like I am in a constant search for answers on what might be the best for my child.

Quick Poll

Do you agree with Gisele's stance on sunscreen?

Yes, all those non-organic creams are poison.

No, she's just promoting her organic line.

I don't know--but it's worth exploring more.

I find it very interesting that celebrities–most notably famous women like Gisele–in droves, have adopted, and perhaps unwittingly, promoted ‘greener’ and eco-friendlier lifestyles. However, while that is admirable, people who go ‘green’ generally avoid commercial care products and cosmetics and their questionable ingredients–as Gisele’s statement references above. Why then are these women endorsing the very products that they refuse to put on their bodies? Gisele, and the like, will not apply, rub, or spray these products on their gorgeous bodies, but they will, however, endorse the same products in exchange for millions of dollars–Gisele was Max Factor’s spokesmodel just last year.

I really don't listen to models or celebrities on this stuff because I doubt they are buying generic Coppertone like most of us; but I'm guessing this didn't quite come out the way she intended.

No matter what it is, moderation is the key and when in doubt-go organic.

That video was in the past. We all grow and become more aware as we get older. As she has said, motherhood changes you and makes you a lot more cautious, protective to ensure your child is in the best care.

This stikes a nerve. I remember a spa attendant on my one and only cruise telling me years ago that anything higher than a 30 SPF did more harm than good due to toxicity.

I don't know enough to know if she's right or not, but I wouldn't be surprised if that stuff's bad for you.

Anyhow, if Gisele ever wants me to apply her organic product to her, I'm ready and willing. ;)

I won't go in the sun. My risk of skin cancer is... higher than John McCain's!

I think she's correct.

How can something that feels like itchy, damp saran wrap on your skin be good for you?

Don't sunbathe, keep your skin covered if outside for long, and stay out of the sun as much as possible during the hours of intense sunlight.

Or use natural sunscreens that contain titanium dioxide. There are a few listed at EWG's www.cosmeticsdatabase.com.

Sun bathe, Gisele, sun bathe; and when your skin turns to leather, eat your words.

Hate to say it but she is right. Almost all sunscreens on the market contain parabens which are linked to breast cancer. In fact I know of only one company who was trying to put together a truly natural sunscreen. Don't know why so many people find this so hard to fathom. In a few years time we will be collectively gasping at how we slathered toxic chemicals on our children thinking that we were protecting them. Isn't the first time and wont be the last. If you want a safe and natural sunscreen for your face use mineral makeup. It is about as natural as it gets if you use a pure mineral makeup.

Mineral makeup is bad for your lungs. The particles are so tiny they get lodged in the lungs. Many things contain parabens, your choice seems to be breast cancer or skin cancer.........

Thanks saska. I'll be honest with you. I have an extensive background in natural personal care products and this is the first I have heard of the particles in the lungs with mineral makeup. I took a year off. Learn something new every day. This just kind of proves my original point though...you think you are doing something safe and...

Yes, it stuns me that brands like Neutrogena will include vit A derived ingredients in their products, even after these findings.
