The nation is gearing up for the first Save Our Libraries day on Saturday (5th February), with around 50 events planned around the UK and "hundreds of thousands" of supporters thought to be backing the cause.

Libraries are a necessary part of society and serve a valuable purpose.

For those who are more affluent, there are other options.

To some a library is a chance for knowledge, peace, and solitude.

It is a shame that our shared public institutions are at risk.

Perhaps if they stopped buying books associated with TV programs and celebrities which are read for a few weeks then ignored, they would improve their chances.
