Four people including a Muslim cleric have been arrested in Bangladesh in connection with the death of 14-year-old girl who was publicly lashed. The teenager was accused of having an affair with a married man, police say, and the punishment was given under Islamic Sharia law.

When the rape charges cannot be proven by 4 witnesses, it automatically reverts to the confession that there was a sexual act. So it reverts to charges of an illegal sexual act, which in islam is punished by lashings for the unmarried, and stoning for married people.

Indeed the cause is much larger in than Fatwa. Note, Mr. Idris- who whipped the girl- is Union Parisad member- is a local elected member. By all likelihood, he is from AL, BNP or independent. The actual problem is poverty and ignorance, extreme economic disparity. Because of these people are not aware of their right. In a way, the entire system is allowing the situation happen and that includes left, right, religious as well as nonreligious ones. Some web-sites have picked it up as something against Sariah. But Sharia and Fatwa is already illegal in Bangladesh. The root problem is poverty and income differential. Indeed it is a bigger disgrace.

No. The root problem is the koran, which is unmistakable in its prescription that "illegal" sexual acts by the unmarried carries the penalty of 100 lashes.

That perhaps is just one of the reasons. But, such horrific torturous death and sexual exploitation of child occurred before Koran. It happens elsewhere in countries where there are other religions. Just going after Koran- or for that sake any other religions like a fanatic will not save the other thousand Hena's in Bangladesh. Education and poverty elimination will.

There is nothing in modern islam that demands this- this is the 'damaged goods theory' of womankind in much of the third world- not just this country. Rape is shame and how could you ever marry this girl off? Thus restore honor, cleanse the act, get rid of the victim and- possibly a bit of money changed hands. Oh- and blame the victim for causing it all. In Afghanistan is a young woman 11 or 12 and up is even SEEN- her village may kill her- we saw this when they would be injured and have to go to the hospital.
This happens in many nations-- and only until women are free persons and not property will it stop.

Even if there is nothing in Islam which demands this (which I think is a very difficult position to adopt and defend), there are a lot of similar objectionable practices in Muslim countries which in over 1000 years, Islam has not stamped out, and in many ways indirectly encouraged, if not directly sanctioned and allowed.
