Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward was selected to serve on President's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in 2010. In the video below, Ward talks about his tough childhood and why he got involved in the Advisory Commission.

"Black kids didn't want to hang out with me because I was Korean," he explained. "Korean kids didn't want to hang out with me because I was black. White kids didn't want to hang out with me because I was black and Korean."

Ward went on to say that he looked to sports and "used all of that negative energy" to turn it into a positive.

He joined 17 others to serve on the White House's Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Scroll down to watch Ward's speech.

Always thought Hines was a good guy. Too bad he plays for the Evil Empire. Yesterday was beautiful

If the Steelers had won this year's Super Bowl, Hines Ward would have been the MVP.

It's really hard for mixed kids in Korea.
It's not so bad if they're half white, but half anything else, and they have to deal with a lot of bullying.
It's sad.
I'm glad for Hines Ward that he has made himself a success story, and is showing his homeland that they shouldn't underestimate their mixed citizens.

I knew Hines pretty well through HS and at UGA.

He has always been a class act, and embraced his humble upbringing.

If a person who didn't have the best childhood can always be smiling and find the positives in life, what your excuse?
I love Hines.....he looked so cool getting off the plane in Dallas with his signature smile, his cowboy hat and boots.

Don't love the Steelers, Don't love Hines as a player, but love him as a person. It'd be nice to see more athletes follow his example off the field.
