Elton John: Lady Gaga Like John Lennon

First Posted: 02/07/11 07:50 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:30 PM ET

Well, she has worn a mop-top wig before...

Elton John provides the music for the new Disney-produced lawn love story 'Gnomeo and Juliet,' and in one notable track, the singer does a duet with Lady Gaga. Apparently, she made a good impression -- he's comparing her to a Beatle.

"I love her, she's absolutely amazing. We've become friends. What I like about the Gaga most is that she's amazingly polite and respectful to everyone around her," the singer told The Daily Mirror. "What I loved most about John Lennon is that he was like that. He once gave my mum a lift to the airport and came to my agent's wedding. The Gaga is like that."

This isn't Gaga's first brush with Lennon's legacy. In October, Gaga performed with Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, as part of the experimental band Lennon and Ono formed in the 70's, Plastic Ono Band. And speaking about that in December, Ono said Lennon would have loved her.

"I think she's wonderful. John would have loved her, because she's an artist, she's fearless and she pushes every limit, which we both always adored," Ono said.

Good thing -- in July, Lennon's son Sean tweeted a photo of Gaga playing at his legendary white piano, which drew criticism from fans, though Sean and Ono defended the action.

I wonder how many of the folks posting negative comments about John Lennon were actually alive to see The Beatles hit the scene in the 60's like I did. I guess watching John from a modern perspective just doesn't give you that same edge as I had watching them evolve into liberators of so many things, example: John Lennon made it easy and "hip" to wear glasses. I think The GaGa does the same thing for a lot of people in her way today, maybe not glasses but in other ways so I can see and understand Elton John's comment. Then again, in the early days you were either a Beatles fan or a Rolling Stones fan, either way, I for one, am very blessed to have seen 'm all from the very beginning as well as today's entertainers. I can see the resemblance between John and Lady GaGa even though they both can come over "weird" in their own way.

lennon was annoyingly self-aware in the air of his specialness -- for which he loses artistic points even if some of his ideas weren't completely infantile. the comparison really isn't all that flattering.

besides which, as has been noted, it was made in reference to their personalities, not their art.

I wonder how people would react if the actual person was to say the same thing! If Lennon were alive, and he said, I like GaGa. Would you call him names too?

I never liked the Beatles, but I will say that John Lennon had more talent in his pinky toe than Lady Gaga has.

Have you ever noticed that when someone like Gaga, receives a genuine compliment from another famous person, people who don't have a fraction of the talent these musicians have jump all over themselves in an attempt to outdo each other at belittling these two amazingly talented friends who happen to like and respect each other. It's amazing..Elton John made a comparison of Gaga to Lennon based on his own very personal frame of reference, he KNEW Lennon and he knows Gaga, personally. Everything these howling hyenas know about Gaga or Elton John or John Lennon probably came from the National Enquirer when they were standing in line at the grocery store. These belittling commentators be little all right.

Another very misleading headline... he was just saying they are/were both polite. Tomorrow's headline: "Lady Gaga compared to my Grandmother"

Huffpo has serious headline problems. You have pointed out yet another example.

Ono is doing some serious shrooms to even think they were in the same league.
Or.... maybe she is just getting old.

"Apparently, she made a good impression -- he's comparing her to a Beatle."

For crying out loud, John was more than a Beatle. They all were/are.

So, this is news that Lady Gaga is polite? C'mon. It's so NOT news that the dreary truth of the story had to be hidden behind a misleading headline. Great that she's polite and respectful. I love that, but the real story is that she is so much like Elvis. He had two legs and so does she! True story!

Elton would serve himself well by keeping his non-thinking mouth tightly shut.
