Hosni Mubarak Could Head To Germany For Health Checks: Report

Hosni Mubarak

aolnews.com:

Rumors are swirling that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak may soon head to Germany for health checks, in a face-saving exit that would likely be heralded as victory for demonstrators calling for his ouster and would also give Egypt's new vice president some breathing room to implement U.S.-backed reforms.

It's unclear whether the 82-year-old leader has any immediate health problems. But such a trip, under the guise of medical reasons, could be one way for Mubarak to plan a graceful departure from the political turmoil surrounding him, though it's unclear whether he's amenable to it. Last week, he delivered a speech on state TV vowing to die on Egyptian soil -- a jab at those demanding his exile.

Sources at a luxury hospital in southwest Germany told Der Spiegel newspaper that they're preparing for Mubarak's possible arrival, under a plan hatched by the U.S. government that would have Mubarak fly to Germany for a "prolonged health check." U.S. officials refused to comment on the report, and a spokesman for Chancellor Angela Merkel told Dow Jones that Germany has received no requests to grant Mubarak exile.

The latest Wikileaks release states clearly "Defense Minister Ehud Barak was "shocked by Mubarak's aged appearance and slurred speech," when he met him in Egypt" Rumors of Mubarak's ill health and possible dementia have already been circulating for sometime, although his address to the Egyptian nation seemed coherent. Then again, he was reading a statement likely to have been dictated and written by a governmental policy wonk. Medical evaluation is one thing; permanent residence is another. The deposed Shah traveled from pillar to post. Where the Rais will end up is the 60 million dollar question!

And freeze his bank accounts - anywhere in the world - so he can't get his hands on the 40-80 Billion Dollars that he has stolen from the Egyptian people over the last 30 years.....

People believed him when he said he'd die in Egypt. He would be very unwise to leave now, and I don't expect he will. Besides, he can afford whatever kind of medical specialist is needed to visit him.

Getting rid of a dictator is not enough. The dictatorship REGIME must be dismantled.

I hope they can save his face, maybe a little Hitler mustache would help.

Seems like a workable plan. So long as reform is not sidetracked ... so, I would be wary none the less.

Aha! That's kind of what I had suspected all along -- that he was just digging in his heels because he didn't want to lose face. I had heard that he was ill, possibly with cancer, and wanted to die on his native soil. Apparently, it's all trumped up to let him flee with minimum loss of face. Hopefully also with minimum quantities of all the money he has stolen from the Egyptian people. As long as he leaves, and soon, I don't think anybody really cares where he goes. I doubt any European nation wants him. I guess he's going to end up right here with all the other ex-dictators.
