Gov. Chris Christie Takes Credit For New Tunnel Proposal

UNION CITY, N.J. — Gov. Chris Christie is taking credit for a new proposal to build a second commuter rail tunnel under the Hudson River after he killed a similar project already under way.

At a town hall meeting Wednesday in Union City, Christie said his decision in October to cancel the nation's most expensive public works project spurred a far better plan.

"I said: Why don't we do this? Why doesn't Amtrak build the tunnel? We were getting it stuck to us by the state of New York and the federal government. And I said, 'No, no, no. You're not going to stick it to the state of New Jersey while I'm governor – no chance.'"

On Monday, Amtrak and New Jersey's two U.S. senators announced a new proposal to build a new tunnel under the Hudson River as an alternative to the Access to the Region's Core plan.

In announcing the new plan, Democratic Sens. Frank Lautenberg and Robert Menendez made it clear that Christie was not involved in coming up with the new proposal and that they were the ones who approached Amtrak to accelerate the railroad's plans for a high-speed rail tunnel. Amtrak was looking into digging a new tunnel but not for decades.

Christie, a Republican getting national attention for his budget-cutting ways, canceled the ARC project Oct. 27 because he said the state would be on the hook for nearly all cost-overruns, which his administration estimated at up to $5 billion on top of the $8.7 billion original price tag.

The federal government and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey each contributed $3 billion to the project, while New Jersey's share was $2.7 billion. The state and Port Authority were responsible for overruns.

The new project is estimated to cost $13.5 billion – or roughly $5 billion more than ARC tunnel.

"They told me I made up the cost overruns," Christie said. "As the plans become more clear, if they want New Jersey to become a partner with New York, with the federal government, I'll consider a fair deal for New Jersey."

At the time, it was the most expensive public works project in the country.

The tunnel was intended to double the capacity for trains traveling between New York City and New Jersey, routes that are now close to capacity and frequently delayed.

The new tunnel plan, which Christie was not involved with, would follow the same basic 9-mile path from Secaucus to New York that had been proposed for the other tunnel and would open in 2020, two years later than the scrapped ARC tunnel.

There are significant differences in the projects.

Unlike the ARC project, Amtrak would also have use of the tunnels, so it would not increase capacity as much for NJ Transit riders but would allow for high-speed trains to run in it.

The ARC tunnel would have ended north of New York's Penn Station, which serves Amtrak in addition to Long Island Rail Road and NJ Transit commuter trains. The proposed one would connect directly to new tracks at Penn Station rather than end far beneath the Macy's store at West 34th Street.

There is not funding in place yet for the new proposal, although Amtrak has committed to spending $50 million on a preliminary engineering and design study.

The project could be a cheaper choice for New Jersey in the long run because of partnerships with Amtrak and other states.

Christie starts conversations with himself and then continues them with people that have no idea what he's talking about as though they were in the conversations from the beginning. And just as an aside, 1010 WINS this morning, played audio about Christie telling someone he's been on a diet and exercises with a trainer, etc. and he's proud of the weight he's lost. Now I don't really care what size he is - it's the brain that counts and oh well - but this man has actually grown in size since he's been in office. His greed is in every aspect of his life.

The Chris Christie bandwagon may have hit a speed bump - at least a
small one - based on results from two new polls released today.

The Quinnipiac survey shows Christie with a 46 percent job approval
rating, with 44 percent disapproving. That's down from his 51 percent
approval rating last month. He also now holds a net negative rating on
education, with 45 percent approving and 49 percent disapproving of
his reform efforts, taking on the teachers' unions and educational
establishment in the process.

For the first time in many months, Obama's approval rating has inched
ahead of Christie's. The president's approval in New Jersey is now
at 50 percent, up four points from last month - and the first time
he's gotten majority approval since June.

The Rutgers poll found 39 percent giving Christie positive ratings,
with 54 percent rating him negatively. The 28 percent of voters who
consider his job performance "poor" is the second-highest for any
first-year governor in the history of the poll.

Why on earth would you be using a poll from last year instead of the one released by Quinnipiac earlier this week?
New Jersey voters approve 52 - 40 percent of the job Gov. Christopher Christie is doing and say 54 - 35 percent that his first year in office is a success.

If it ever gets built, doubtful in my opinion, one thing is for sure it won't be named "The Christie Tunnel!"

THe Republicans are hypocrites,anti-American,liars and self serving spoiled brats. Chris Christie actually believes the lies he spews which makes him pathetic. New Jersey citizens are beginning to feel the damage and see the effects of what he has done to the state. The Republicans think he is a savior when in reality, he would never get votes outside his base conservatives.Chris Christie was involved with the negotiations and he will not have a say when this project goes foward. All hail FAKE NEWS!(FOX NEWS)

Lautenberg, Menendez & LaHood all criticized Christie only 3 months ago for cancelling the tunnel to Macy's Basement. The Senator's said the tunnel to Penn Station was not feasible. Three months later now they're back with the tunnel to Penn Station & it won't be built on the backs of NJ taxpayers. Thank you Governor Christie!

And of course, he will blame the Democrats for the states lowered bond rating. Maybe if he hadn't shot off his big mouth about NJ going in bankruptcy during the bond negotiations, we would not have been lowered to AA-....... Another Christi blunder!

It's amazing that when the Republicans find an effective likable leader the d's automatically try to cut him down. Aren't we all on the same team...Ugh!

The D's can play their political games all they want...Gov. Christie saved the NJ taxpayers Billions. If Gov. Christie did nothing the old plan would have continued and the overruns would have run into the Billions (That's with a "b"). His nixing of that deal forced the hand of anybody to come up with an alternative...And now it is happening...

"Democrats will not have the guts for the "big things" because they want to be liked instead of respected.

"I want your respect first," Gov. Chris Christie

Amen! Polls mean nothing...Results is what we are looking for.

@ Ragstorags. "It's amazing that when the Republicans find an effective likable leader the d's automatically try to cut him down. Aren't we all on the same team...Ugh!"

No more amazing than the Republicans who ignored the message from the voters when it repudiated their plans and stood for tearing down a popular President by becoming the party of No. Weren't we all on the same team when the economy was crashing and Obama was trying to do something to stop it from falling off the cliff?

Where is the "replacement" for HCR the Republicans are promising? Are we just suposed to believe they have one like we were supposed to beileve in McCain's Secret Plan to fix the economy that he was going to reveal if elected?

Christie wants to take credit for a plan he had nothing to do with. It's like Corker and Shelby taking credit for new GM jobs at plants in their states.

WHAT? Saved NJ taxpayers billions? My real estate tax just shot up more than it ever has in over the 20 years I have lived in the state AND forget the real estate rebates......THEY went into the millionaire's tax cuts last year!
02:17 PM on 02/10/2011
That's strange because the property tax has gone up considerably many times over the past 20 years...and Chris Christie just put a cap on it so that can't continue to happen. Are you lying or just ill informed?

How did the people of New Jersey vote for this odious fool? If it wasn't for the decent, hard-working people of New Jersey, I would suggest closing all tunnels and bridges just to keep Christie contained.

Did you know NJ has the highest percentage of millionaires in the country? Christie received a huge percentage of the votes from the uber-rich northwestern counties. Real Housewives of NJ land. The rich will always vote for those who will take care of them.

That's the Repub strategy -- they savaged the stimulus bill, then took credit for every project in their state/district made possible by stimulus funds.

Well, he did scrape plans several months ago for a new tunnel that was in the works for years, because it would be too costly which was a devastating blow to commuters who were hoping to cut their commute by 45 minutes. During his campaign, he supported the project for the new tunnel. Then trashed the idea, so I guess that makes him a liar. And now he decided to revisit the idea and claim credit? Not cool. He'll take that money, fix a few minor roads, probably leading up to his home and office and then the rest will disappear. What a total waste of time and money.
