Natalie Portman's Baby Bump Means Bigger Oscar Dress

First Posted: 02/09/11 07:28 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:30 PM ET

Natalie Portman is the front runner for the Best Actress Oscar this year, so the bigger question for the big night is what she'll actually wear to the event.

Portman, who is nominated for her role in ballet thriller "Black Swan," announced in December that she's pregnant -- and her style choices at the winter's huge number of awards shows, such as the Golden Globes and SAG Awards, have been a hot topic.

The question came up again at the recent pre-Oscars luncheon press conference, and Portman left it vague -- but didn't make it seem like she would be doing much hiding.

"It's certainly all about leaving space for growth," she said, "but it is always surprising also that that's become the conversation instead of the movies now, unfortunately - what are you wearing?"

If she wins a golden statuette, though, all that questioning just might be worth it. For video of Portman showing off the baby bump at the event, watch below.

Maybe a canopy, a Blimp, an asteroid... Oh I know, she could hold an actual baby over it!
That would be awesome!

I imagine she will either pull the dress over her head or step into it..proceed to slip her arms through the sleeves then zip it up in the back.Voila! Dress is on and "baby bump" is covered. I swear the headlines on this site get more ridiculous by the day.

Okay, I have a pretty high tolerance for BS articles in the entertainment section, but this is really pushing it, Huffpo.

Why hide it? We all know it's there. Plus, if you fail to hide it discreetly, it will just bring on more catty disparagement.

There are so many things to say about this idiotic story. First, she doesn't need to "cover it up." She's pregnant, not growing a gargoyle around her middle. And secondly, the headline: She's going to need a bigger dress, Captain Obvious? REALLY?!?

Natalie will be clothed and beautiful regardless of her "baby bump"...I despise these words. Natalie is carrying her child, not a bump. Her child is the most important issue and not how she will "cover it"..

The term "baby bump" is so grotesque to me. It sounds so dehumanizing to both the mother and child. There's a human life growing in there, but describing it as a "baby bump" makes is sound like the mother's growing a tumor, or, worse, that her pregnancy is a fashion accessory. Are we too adolescent to use the term "pregnant" anymore?

Heavy sigh. Baby bumping again. She's pregnant and will be until she gives birth after a nine-month gestation period. Until then, she will continue to wear clothes.

Lets ban the "baby bump" label this year shall we. I'm sick of the baby bump debuts, the baby bumps stepping out, the baby bumps on the red carpet, the baby bumps at elegant dinners, the baby bumps at the awards shows. Seriously these ladies are pregnant not growing a little man like in Total Recall.

Right, because clothing yourself when youre so far along is almost impossible...they make it sound like she will have to wear a curtain wrapped around her body. Who says it needs to be covered or hidden anyway? Like no one will remember its there if it cant be seen?

People's attitudes about the normalcy of pregnancy and the changes a woman goes through are really sad these days. Might as well have a headline that says "How the H@ll is She Gonna Cover That Horrendous S#*t Up?!"
