Banksy: Oscars May Ban 'Exit Through The Gift Shop' Director

Oscar Nominations Banksy

Street artist Banksy doesn't show his face in public -- and as a result, the Oscars may kick him to the curb.

The elusive artist directed the street art documentary "Exit Through The Gift Shop," which was nominated for an Academy Award. It's a great achievement, but presents one major problem: Banksy doesn't show his face in public.

Rumored to wear a monkey mask while making rare public appearances, his antics have those behind the Oscars worried -- and ready to make contingencies in case he wins.

Academy executive director Bruce Davis talked about the issue to The Wrap. "If that film wins and five guys in monkey masks come to the stage all saying, 'I'm Banksy!' Who the hell do we give it to?" he asked rhetorically. Because of those worries, the artist will most likely not be allowed on stage.

"We suggested to them that it might be a good idea that if he did win, one of them would accept in his place - that it would not be dignified for the Academy to have somebody come up wearing a monkey's head," Davis said, referring to conversations with the Jaimie D'Cruz, the film's producer.

Whatever happens, prepare for some monkey business.

Dignified??

Has he not watched an Oscars before?

Maybe he'll send Thierry Guetta to accept it. The guy did shoot most of the footage.

Like the Oscars are really dignified-- he's an artist and I'm sure he's not worried about it and so should the Oscars.

Banksy is the only reason I'll watch the Oscars. Great film. I love Banksy, I love his persona. Even if he doesn't show up I think he's just shy. If Banksy were to attend the Oscars I'll bet his art would be affected by the experience for several months. Actually, I would like to see what he would produce after being exposed to Oscar and the giltterati. Twisted! Fabulous!

More useless "psuedo-controversy" to drum up ratings I'm sure.

Can't they have him pre-record an acceptance speech with his face blurred out or in shadow like int he picture used above?

It's because there are so many cut ups in the room (actor comedian extraordinaire in their own minds) someone or multiple people will go up their in monkey masks.. its a given.

So what? Plenty of people have their awards accepted by other people when they can't make it personally. This guy just wants to continue his wanky no one sees my face schtick.

"Hi, we're going to honor your artistic flair and genius by dictating to you how it should be done"

Ass hats.

There's no chance that Banksy would physically show up at the Oscars. If he did, I doubt anyone would no about it until he decided to talk about days/weeks/months later. The dude is like Batman. It is possible he could orchestrate an incredible art-stunt. Who knows? This may be my only reason for watching the Oscars for the first time in years!

the academy should feel lucky if all they get is a guy in a monkey mask. it could be a gitm* prisoner or a whole lot worse.

best doc i've seen in a long time & i'm still trying to figure out exactly what it was i was watching.
