Facebook Pages Get A Redesign (PICTURES)

The Huffington Post

Facebook Pages are about to get a major redesign that will change their look and functionality for both administrators and fans.

The new page layout will resemble Facebook's most recent profile redesign. Once a page administrator upgrades to the new format, a navigation menu will appear to the left of the page's wall, and the row of tabs will disappear from the top of the page. Below the page's main title, administrators can update the page's information and feature recent photos.

Admins can also browse Facebook as a page and interact with other pages. For example, an admin using the HuffPost Tech page could visit the page for HuffPost Health and leave a comment as HuffPost Tech. If HuffPost Tech "Likes" another page, that page's activity will show up in HuffPost Tech's dedicated News Feed.

Page administrators can choose to receive email notifications of activities on the page. Admins also have the option of organizing the content in their page's wall. Inside Facebook explains how this works:

Page admins can select between an "Everyone" and a Page posts only default tab for the wall. Instead of showing a reverse chronological stream of posts, the Everyone tab shows users posts Facebook thinks will be the most relevant. Recent posts by friends, posts by other users in same language or country, and posts that have received a lot of Likes and comments will bubble to the top.

When it comes to interacting with individual users, there are still some restrictions. "Pages [...] cannot post on a user's wall or comment on his or her status. The lone exception is for a user who has opted for the 'everybody' privacy setting; Pages can comment on status updates for those individuals," writes Mashable.

TechCrunch notes that the upgrade kicks in on March 10. Starting today, page administrators can take a Page Tour and get a feel for the coming changes. There is also a manual that details the upgrade.

To see what the new pages will look like, check out the screenshot (below).

I HATE all the changes Facebook keeps doing. They might think they're relevant but they're confusing and everybody HATES them for doing this and just wants to be able to communicate seamlessly and post things they want to and view what they want to - not what Facebook thinks we should. I wish they'd stop this nonsense.

Am I the only one who thinks the UI on facebook is awful?

Am I the only one who thinks the UI on facebook is awful? Moving things around doesnt solve the issue. They need to simplify and re-orginize the UI so it is actualy user freindly. It would also help if they would correct the site so screen readers can actualy navagate it. I wont get into the other cashing/loading issues I have run into.

Just another way to keep FB users confused and privacy settings hidden.

I feel sorry for people who must use Facebook to have a life.

@QSO If you have a FB profile youself, then how can you comment and complain? You've quite willingly offered yourself up to THEM.

Sorry to burst your smug, flying under the RADAR bubble, but even with the privacy settings on, FB mines your info, where you live, traces your IP address codes, and anything else you've placed on their site.

Wake up and don't you feel foolish?

Or maybe QSO is just making an astute observation and doesn't use Facebook at all. Judging people shouldn't be done for sport.

Very cool we just added a new app via the recent iframe functionality that fb allows. Question to all you designers: currently we have a direct stream via iframe, can u tell me how to cut and paste the code into fbml? we need this custom branding app to stay on our page and let visitors take the quiz, is this possible w/o iframe? does fb have policy of fbml vs iframe for the new design? link is below

I like this a lot. I REALLY like the ability to interact with others as the 'page.' It really narrows the gap between what you can do as a person versus a page. This will be very popular.

I agree! Anyone who thinks this is "confusing" is obviously not a page admin. These changes are a LONG time coming for those of us with pages.

I know a lot of people who didn't like doing pages for their businesses or organizations because of the pretty ghetto limitations. This change addresses a LOT of those concerns. I just hope it doesn't lead to a lot of spam posts on our walls!

FB, I kinda dig the new lightbox photos and so forth but please please fix the sharing. You have the bandwidth for hotlinks not a big deal man. Oh and could you please ssl private data? You already have an ssl, force login by ssl like every one of my ecommerce sites do.

Thanks

So the technology section in Huffpost consists of three things. Facebook, Apple and Twitter.

Great. I wish there was a way to make the "Tech" TAB disappear from my browser. Who's running this section a high school kid?

Huh? Lets take a tally of how much news there is in this section about Apple, Facebook and Twitter vs other tech news.

And I forgot to mention: every time FB makes a big change like this, it disables a lot of 3rd-party applications that use objects that no longer exist. FB is one of the last frameworks I would ever do development for.

This is their second big interface change in about 6 weeks. Just a few months ago, they said the top tabs were an essential, integral part of the design; then they removed the tabs from the personal screens and now they've removed them from the pages. Facebook is confusing decision making with vacillation.

Did I read correctly when it said "the Everyone tab shows users posts Facebook thinks will be the most relevant." Facebook now gets to determine which posts EVERYONE gets to see? How do they know what I would, or would not, find "relevant"?

This part disturbs me the most, yet seems to have slipped by everyone else. Perhaps I mis-read it?

Yeah, I didn't understand that, either. If those posts are as relevant as the ads, I'll end up deleting them. Some genius seems to think I like ads from right-wing organizations, even though I keep closing them and marking them as "misleading" or "offensive".

Seriously?? Again?? I just figured out to how to use the current layout...

They haven't changed the pages layout in ages, so what do you mean "again'?
