10 FDA Drug Recalls And Rejections

First Posted: 02/10/11 08:47 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:30 PM ET

The Food And Drug Administration (FDA) has drawn praise and criticism for it's cautious oversight of pharmaceuticals. With that in mind, here is a list of 10 of the FDA's biggest drug recalls, rejections and warnings.

Contrave
1 of 11
Over the last 10 years, weight-loss pills have typically been taboo with the Food And Drug Administration (FDA). But there were high hopes for this particular drug, Contrave, after an FDA expert panel approved it in December of 2010.

High hopes were soon squashed with the agency's announcement to reject the once-promising drug this month. The FDA cited concerns that the drug could exacerbate heart problems.

The fact is most drugs especially the big hitters in the profit department are over sold. Statins ;.....bone density drugs and ssris all appear to be overused. ' but they make that cash register ring....It is after all the medical industry.

Vicodin is prescribed routinely by doctors and dentists following small office procedures. Too many people get addicted to the opiate and overuse the drug which causes liver toxicity because of the tylenol part of it. And/or they graduate to street drugs.

Doctors need to quit being so irresponsible. Most just don't want you calling after hours, so they write the Rx without being asked, so you'll have it just in case.

Isn't it relevant to discuss why the sales of dangerous pharmaceuticals is rampant and on TV, but educational materials and rational discussion about cannabis is largely overlooked?

Agreed. I remember when prescription medicines were not advertised to the public at all.

And how about the advertising to the profession? I still get junk mail for the tenant who lived here before me, who was a pediatrician. One professional journal that just arrived is absolutely crammed with large glossy ads for ADHD medications. It is clear that they are the primary sponsor of the publication.

Aspirin and antibiotic are the only 2 drugs I will take - if that doesn't fix it I guess I am ready for the pine box.

I never took any of these drugs, but I seem to recall alot of them being heavily marketed. It's always about the money, isn't it.

It's not a drug, but when is the FDA going to admit it was wrong about aspartame?

All who don't know should google "How Aspartame became legal-the timeline"

Based on that info, I would say the government will never admit anything! Thanks for the reminder though.

Vioxx was an absolutely astonishing drug, eliminating the pain from my arthritis virtually over night, and seemingly permanently. The difference in my hips and knees was like a miracle, but I remember being even more amazed about how freely my hands were able to move. It was as though I'd had a transplant of hands, or had removed a lifetime coat of plaster from my hands.

Approx. 6 months into it, I began experiencing palpitations and chest discomfort. I underwent intensive cardiac tests; nuclear, stress, monitors, echo, etc. The week I was due at my cardiologist to review the results - those showing I was in almost constant atrial fibrillation - Vioxx was pulled from the market - a complete surprise to me. I'd heard zero about the concerns before the recall.

Another round of cardiac exams showed no lasting damage.

I was among those who suffered the negative side effects. But I've never taken ANY medication that SEEMED to do what it was designed to do so quickly and so completely.

Yes, I'm lucky i stopped before damage was done. But I do miss that brief period of being pain free, ache free and the ability to bend, stoop, kneel and sit without a grimace or groan.

My cardiac symptoms disappeared almost instantly

It's such a racket. The Drug companies spend the gazillions they charge us to brainwash into more disorders and medications. They and the physicians and hospital industry are in bed together, to mostly rip off Medicare and Medicaid. What does it matter if a few hundred thousand suffer and die when the company stands to make billions and billions from a new, hyped, marketed, and bribed drug?

Let me give you one more for your list. Gentamicin usually used for gram negative infections or because it is cheap. Take my word for it never take it. It was given to me for a kidney infection instead put me into renal failure and destroyed my vestibular system.

Unfortunatily I am Canadian suing for damage from a drug is like winning a lottery nearly impossible.

Just like here. Suing is easy, winning, and then actually getting a settlement after the sharks have gotten to it is the hard part

As a person with terrible arthritis from the age of 27 Vioxx worked for me. It is probably all those people that are told on the nightly news to nauseum ask your doctor that perhaps did not need it and got heart attacks.

Thank you, HuffPo, for including a link to the 24/7 Wall St. article about the 10 Worst Drug Recalls in the History of the FDA.

However....

The HuffPo slideshow is missing the #2 worst drug recall from that article: DES (diethylstilbestrol). The DES drug disaster affected an estimated 5-10 million in the US alone, and millions more around the world, wherever American drug companies had a presence.

PLEASE add a photo of the DES pills to the HuffPo slideshow, as some folks may not click on the 24/7 Wall St. article hyperlink.

For photos of DES pills and bottles, visit this link: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=191445&id=233795428655.

Thank you!

and the moral of the story:
the food you eat is poisoned.
when you get medicine for your decaying body, that too will poison you.

STOP EATING THE POISON!!!!!
packaged...processed....plastic wrapper = probably poison.

Godspeed.
