Cheaper, Smaller 'iPhone Nano' In The Works, Say Sources

First Posted: 02/10/11 05:49 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:30 PM ET

According to Bloomberg, Apple is hoping to stem Android's rise with a new model of the iPhone that is "cheaper and smaller" than the iPhone 4. Think of it as the "iPhone Nano."

Citing "people who have been briefed on the plans," Bloomberg writes the new version of the smartphone would sell for around $200 with a two-year contract and adds, "Apple also is developing technology that makes it easier to use the iPhone on multiple wireless networks."

Rumors that Apple was planning an "iPhone Nano" have been around for years: in 2008, the Daily Mail reported Apple would "launch the iPhone 'nano' in time for Christmas."

The latest version of the iPhone, the CDMA-enabled iPhone 4 that is compatible with Verizon's network, was released Thursday to little fanfare. Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 5 in June of this year.

Am I the only one concerned how in the world will I watch a movie or play a game without going blind?

Second HP fail noted today...the mini iPhone would come without a contract for $200, not with a 2 yr contract as stated above. The lack of a contract would be it's chief attraction and the providers in Europe and elsewhere would love to stop it.

I hope it looks like the current iPod Nano, with a small form-factor and touch-screen. It would have to be used with headphones but that should not be a problem for anyone who already wears them all day.

Great! If they make a wristband for it I can wear it like a watch. It could replace my watch AND be a phone. Display the time as a screensaver. But have it work on multiple networks and I'm there!

instead of carding at the bar they'll just ask to see your Iphone, if they can read the screen you aren't old enough to be in a bar

Well we can't tell if verizon will be any better than AT&T although that should be easy, as far as the I-4 goes I am already on my second one and it's only been 7 months.

An iPhone that works across multiple wireless networks is what will get my attention.

A teeny weeny phone the size of a button with a camera with a bluetooth connection to an iPad or laptop for anyone interested in a video call. Such a phone would kill texting once and for all. Yup, I hate texting THAT much!

Oh, you are so much better than the millions of people who own and love using their iPhones. Do tell us about the superior phone you have that proves what a winner you are.

Calm down big Bertha I have an iPhone myself. You seem to think I made a typo and instead of "iPad nano" you thought I was going to put "iPhone nano" which is wrong. I meant iPad nano. Like another commenter pointed out, if you want an iPad nano then buy an iPod touch lol

Well its about time.

Here comes the Iwatch where the phone is embedded into your watch and it will be voice activated.

The only downside is that you have to have the cell radio transmitters embedded in the tissue at the top of both ears. Then, you have sleep with your Ipad on your pillow overnight to recharge the batteries in these transmitters!

I just bought and extra long cord for my rotary dial phone. Soon it'll reach the corner store and I'll be truly mobile.

I am waiting for a slightly large iPAD.  Maybe generation 2 will do it.

Smaller is not better. These electronic gadgets are getting so small they're actually harder to use.

And easier to lose, which is probably their thinking, because losing it means always having to buy another. I'm like you, tired of this idea that smaller is somehow better. What really gets me is that the designers are mostly men, and they have to know that men have larger finger tips, so how do they expect us to use these tiny phones with their tiny little keyboards. It's stupid. I won't even buy one.

They are intended to be used by 3 to 5 year olds.  No senior has the eyesight to use them let alone the arthritic finger dexterity.
