Colorado Independent:

As state Senator Pat Steadman gets set to introduce his civil unions legislation in Denver next week, new public opinion poll results bolster the case for the bill. The results of a Public Policy Polling survey (pdf) conducted this past weekend match almost exactly results of a survey conducted last January by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner and American Viewpoint. More than 70 percent of Coloradans support legally recognized domestic partnerships, including those between same-sex couples.

In 2006 56% of Colorado voters defined marriage as between "one man and one woman".

That is consistent with the poll results.

I applaud Sen. Stedman for introducing this legislation. However, I have to wonder why the democrats didn't bring this forward when they had control of both houses of the state legislature and the Governors office. I simply don't see it going anywhere in the House with the haters in control.

I'm further annoyed that even if it passes....my partner and I will be on an island with our own country that recognized our relationship. Why are gays in Colorado worthy of more respect and rights than gays in Indiana? This needs to be addressed at a federal level.

I am constantly amazed that this topic is still even an issue. Civil Union, Marriage...whatever...everyone should have a shot.

I've lived in Colorado over 30 years and remember the heinous fight over Amendment 2. It's difficult to think that Colorado has made this much social progress, but I'll hope for the best. Love you Pat, give Dave a kiss for me.

Was in Denver from 1972 until 2003 and was certainly involved with the fight against Amend2... enjoyed marching in the Gay Pride Parades, dancing at the gay/lesbian bars. Now in Oregon, it's good to see that Colorado is becoming more progressive and open-minded. Federally recognized Gay marriage in all 50 state with the hudreds of benefits & privileges that are 'allowed' to straight married couples... is what needs to happen in order to become a UNITED states of America.

This should have been done years ago, especially when the Dems controlled both houses and the governorship. I can't see this passing in the House, though I really hope it does. I think the best chance for this to happen will be if it comes from a ballot measure given the current public support. However, groups like Focus on the Family and the like have deep pockets and will fight this the entire way. Its not marriage equality, but its a step in the right direction. Extremely disappointing that people would be opposed to giving others the basic right to allow them to make important decisions in their loved one's life.

I REALLY HOPE that this legislation passes!! I'm a Colorado native currently living in NM and my partner and I are planning to move back to the Denver area this summer. It would be GREAT if we could LEGALIZE our long-time union (over 15 years)!!!!
