Ruth Madoff Turned Away At Son Mark Madoff's Memorial

Ruth Madoff

Ruth Madoff flew to Connecticut to be at her son's memorial service, but Mark Madoff's grieving widow would have none of it.

A source tells People that Stephanie Madoff barred Ruth from coming to the memorial, after her husband Mark committed suicide in December.

"[Ruth] told me, 'At night, it gets to me -- the shame, the disgrace, all the stuff that killed Mark,'" the source said.

From the Post:

When Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme collapsed, Mark and his brother, Andrew, warned their mother: It's him or us.

Ruth, 69, chose her cherished sons, the source said -- until Bernie Madoff was beaten in prison in 2009. She returned to the 72-year-old swindler's side, infuriating the two sons, who cut her out of their lives.

According to the source, Ruth Madoff hides her identity by using her maiden name, Alpern, and "dyes her hair red when venturing out to rent dollar DVDs or visit the public library."

The sins of the father fell on the son.
Even though there were problems with
the father, Stephanie should have
allowed the lady that carried Mark for
nine month and raised him to come to
his funeral. After all she was his mother.
How sad. A funeral is not a time to hold
grudges.

Life is not necessarily fair, but we all do the best we can to make something of lives. Bernie stole from a lot of wealthy people and he and his family benefitted from his actions for a while. I don't care who knew what when, but I do know that his whole family will suffer for generations. This is a cross they will bare for decades. Everyone of the people in his family will feel their own pain whether they were directly involved or not.

The pain is now with the living. Mark is with the ultimate judge.

I'm sorry but whatever issues the "Daughter-In-Law" and her son had with each other ended when he died. That was her son, and I'm sure the Daughter-in-law would be very upset if one her kids spouses barred her from a memorial for her child.......... no matter what had transpired between them.......... if Ruth wanted to be there then that is her right as a mother

If the sons worked with Madoff, just like their mother, THEY KNEW; if so, they are just as guilty, or else they were dumber than dirt. This is the height of hypocracy that a woman who lived so well off these crimes just as much as anyone, including her mother-in-law, would say to ANY mother that she couldn't be present at her own son's funeral/memorial service. Who's to say that it wasn't this widowed wife's fault just as much as anyone else's? We do not have all the facts, yet. This is GROSS hypocracy, as well as extreme selfishness and self-centeredness, to say the very least. She may live to regret this when her own children are older. Somehow ALL of this family lacks spirituality and morality, so they may actually deserve what they get. This is just not right for any children involved.

I am left puzzled as to how they can be so righteous when they lavishly benefited from their father's largess and lying. They knew those reports were falsified and they still have a lot of his dirty money.

That is heartbreaking and simply wrong.

Dealing with that kind of emotion of what has happened as a result of that scheme on daily basis has got to be a bone-crushing weight on a persons shoulders.

I want to feel sorry for them, but I feel more sorry the people Maddoff screwed.

It's sad that stories like this from outfits such as People and the New York Post are taken as fact just because they have a source. The Post has put out different stories about Madoff that, like this one, should be treated as dubious at best. It's not even confirmed that Madoff got in a fight in prison.
11:36 AM on 02/12/2011
As far as the NY Post is concerned, unless it's a sports score, the story is not factual, either partially or completely and it's intentionally false.

That family is F'ed up.
I don't know what she or the sons knew but I suspect they knew more than the let on.
As dirty as the husband was I really don't think you can ask his wife of so many years to completely turn her back on him. Shame on the sons. I don't even think they should have completely turned on him. Be angry, speak out about how wrong he was and his but its not like he was raping six year olds or murdering whole countries...even though I know those who were swindled by him probably feel like he did.

Shame on the sons? Why? They did the right thing. Maybe they deserted their father to protect their own kids and family. Most probably all of them knew what Bernie was upto but didn't/couldn't do anything to stop him. Most people would do the same. It's not deserting if Bernie's kids decided to protect themselves and their kids from their grandfather.

That's just wrong. She was his mother. All the animosity should be put to the side at funerals.

May she find no peace, while still under the sun
May she have no solace, while in the land of men
May she feel the same hurt, from the destructive deamons she allowed loose on others.
May her bowl be filled with dust, and her cup bear ash.
May her lamentation never cease, and her teeth forever knashed

I've got to agree...the wife deserves to grieve in peace. Why would you allow the person you likely blame for your husband's death to be present at his memorial? Let the mother wallow in her own sorrow and grief ALONE. And, yes, I absolutely positively believe the mother KNEW about the scheme all the while...
