From Inhabitat:

Word on the street was that architect Bjarke Ingels was keeping designs for his pyramid-like residential tower for NYC a secret, but they were finally released earlier this week to much fanfare. The West 57th residential tower takes our favorite features from BIG's other residential projects like green space, dramatic sloping and sustainability and adapts them to fit the Big Apple's famed skyline.

Famed architect Bjarke Ingels has been tight lipped about a project his team has been working on for New York City and we're delighted to report that it was finally unveiled today! The West 57th residential tower is an evolutionary growth from BIG's other residential projects in Copenhagen, only at the scale of New York's famed skyline. It brings with it a huge south-west facing slope, with protected green space making up the heart of the project.

I am inspired by the concept of W57th. In my opinion, the design is revolutionary. It's about time we think outside the box and build something more unique for people to live in. I wrote a wonderful story about the design on my blog at http://www.virtual-muse.com/blog/2011/02/bold-new-tower-stirs-the-pot-in-hells-kitchen/

It seems like an aweful waste of space. The price per square foot would be through the roof.

First impression----Yuck! Frank Gehry!. Then I thought about it some, looked at the pictures a few more times and thought, OK, almost as ugly, but not quite, as a Frank Gehry design. At least this building doesn't look as if it has been in a melt and twist accident.

And at least this architect hasn't copied himself several times over. For me, the worst thing about Gehry is that he continuously rehashes the same swoopy forms to the point it becomes cheap gimmick.

If you use the same alphabet to string along a sentence --- artificially it all looks the same --- till you decipher the hiding meaning berried deep in the language.

Great design! I like the way they took into account shadowing of surrounding buildings to take advantage natural sunlight in the green space.

What's the Danish word for "ugly"?

It reminds me of the "swiss cheese" building that trashed up the look of Columbus Circle for many years.

At least they're going to put it next to the garbage truck depo so by comparison it may look good, though totally out of place.

The wide, noisy busy highway immediately in front isn't going to be too appealing either.

But you will have a view of the river, you know, the one they land the planes in.

Sir

Bjark Ingels design looks wonderful, - I look forward to studying the concepts in detail. Let us hope that the project gets built.

This young Danish architect seems destined for international fame. Although only in his 30s, Mr. Ingels has already received a staggering number of architectural awards.

I understand that Mr. Ingels is also a lecturer at Columbia University; Columbia is very fortunate to have him.

Sincerely, Derek Lantin. http://dereklantin.booksabuzz.com

I wonder where the apartment that constitutes the penthouse is situated.
