Penguins, Islanders Brawl: NHL Teams Fight For Second Time In 9 Days (VIDEO)

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- John Tavares, Matt Moulson and rookie Michael Grabner all scored their 20th goal of the season and the New York Islanders got some revenge against the injury-depleted Pittsburgh Penguins with their sticks and their fists in a fight-filled 9-3 victory on Friday night.

Just nine days after Brent Johnson beat New York 3-0 and knocked out Rick DiPietro in a one-punch fight that left the franchise goalie with broken bones in his face, the Islanders responded with four goals in the first period and four more in the second - with an all-out brawl in the middle of the offensive outburst.

WATCH:

That was just the appetizer for a third-period donnybrook - in which Johnson fought again - that caused a delay of about 15 minutes. With multiple ejections, both benches had only a handful of players on them for the final 12-plus minutes.

New York chased Johnson 3:46 into the second period when callup enforcer Micheal Haley made it 6-0 on the Islanders' 16th shot. As Johnson skated to the backup goalie seat in the tunnel leading to the Penguins' dressing room, he was showered with an avalanche of boos from the unusually large crowd that clearly remembered what he did to DiPietro.

But his night wasn't over. Johnson returned at the start of the third period and got bowled over 1:19 in when Grabner was knocked into him by a hard hit from Pittsburgh's Brooks Orpik.

The second huge brawl broke out at 4:47, and Haley had two fights in the melee - first with Max Talbot and then with Johnson after the goalie skated out toward the blue line. Haley charged after him, and both players dropped their gloves and started punching. Eric Godard was also involved, trying to protect the Penguins' netminder.

Haley became an instant favorite among the 12,888 in attendance, who probably never heard of him before Friday. But they chanted his name every time there was another dustup, long after he was sent to the dressing room.

The second major uprising was sparked by New York enforcer Trevor Gillies' elbow that left Eric Tangradi prone on the ice. Tangradi was recalled on Friday from Wilkes Barre/Scranton of the AHL. Godard and Haley, who came up from AHL Bridgeport on Friday, were both ejected with double game misconducts.

Pittsburgh's Craig Adams and Gillies were also booted from the game. Johnson was forced to remain in the net and heard boos and derisive chants during the final minutes.

Travis Hamonic, Jesse Joensuu, and P.A. Parenteau added goals for the Islanders, who earned their second win in two days after beating Montreal on the road in a shootout on Thursday night. Mikko Koskinen earned both wins - his first two in the NHL.

Moulson and Grabner both added second goals to give them a team-leading 21 as the Islanders broke out with their highest-scoring game of the season. Grabner provided the final punch with a short-handed breakaway goal with 2:09 remaining in the game.

Kris Letang, Jordan Staal and Tyler Kennedy scored power-play goals for Pittsburgh, which won at home in overtime against Los Angeles on Thursday and will play at the New York Rangers on Sunday afternoon. It hardly mattered in this one that the Penguins were again without All-Stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.

The melee in the second period came when Matt Martin jumped Talbot in the neutral zone. The Islanders had made Talbot a marked man because of his hit against Blake Comeau in the previous game that has left the Islanders forward sidelined since with a concussion.

Martin's actions sparked fights between unlikely brawlers Josh Bailey of the Islanders and Pittsburgh's Pascal Dupuis, Hamonic and Penguins forward Mike Rupp, and another matchup of Martin and Deryk Engelland.

Bailey was ejected following his first NHL fight along with teammates Martin and Hamonic, and Pittsburgh's Engelland, Rupp and Dupuis. Martin was also hit with an instigator penalty and a separate 10-minute misconduct.

Marc-Andre Fleury allowed two goals on nine shots in 16 minutes, 14 seconds of action in the second period. Johnson then returned for his rough third period. He was slow in getting back to his skates after being down in a snow-angel position for a few moments after being hit by Grabner.

Notes: Haley, who played in his third career NHL game, had 144 penalty minutes in 50 games at Bridgeport this season. ... In addition to the absence of Crosby and Malkin, the Penguins were also without forwards Matt Cooke (suspension), Arron Asham (upper body), Mike Comrie (hip), Chris Kunitz (lower body), Mark Letestu (lower body). ... The Penguins hadn't allowed nine goals since an 9-0 loss at Tampa Bay on Nov. 8, 2003.

I normally defend violence in hockey but this did cross the line. Matt Martin's sucker punch of Talbot was giving me deja vu of the bertuzzi incident- why not just ask him to dance if you're so mad at him? Gillies should have gotten at least twice as many games for concussing an opponent 10 years younger and 60 lbs lighter with a completly uncalled, extremely dangerous elbow to the head, followed by pounding on a woozy rookie then taunting him when he's recieving treatment for the concussion. Just awful. Guy has no purpose out there and can't even fight. And Godard should have gotten 10 for leaving the bench + another 5 for brutal 2 on 1ing. Of Course Colin Campbell makes a mockery of his position AGAIN! You know if his son Greg was playing for the islanders they wouldn't have gotten a single game.

It is all about the goalie here folks. Goalies are protected by team mates in hockey like quarterbacks in football. You intentionally go after the other team's goalie and you are asking for it. And I guess both teams were running smack at each other. Fodder for the Jim Rome Show.

I have no idea how you inferred your accusation. I am just commenting on what I have seen in sports over the years. I grew up around an NFL team. My Iate father was an NFL team physician. I have seen first hand the physical toll that can happen to an athlete. I do not approve of excessive violence in sports, nor do I get my jollies from it.

In response to DR2.... Your suggestion is almost a reality:

If you search on line you will find that this idea is in the works - no fooling!

A _anadian "entrepreneur" is/was looking for investors to support a business that consists of nothing but two (or more) guys dressed like hockey players going to center ice and duking it out. I am not making this up.

By the way, if I/you write _anada or _anadian, the HP censor n@tzis will cut your n@ds off - that is why I drop the 'C'. Someone here is flagging any reference to _anada that they don't like.

NO JOKE - this is the 5th time I posted this.

They've been trying it for years. There is no interest in it, especially among those of us who love hockey and the hockey fights.

This specific game was a spectacle without much hockey and grace, and that's unfortunate for the sport.

However anyone who thinks a regular fight between two NHL players is thuggish doesn't know much about hockey. A fight on a Detroit street is not the same kind of fight seen in Joe Louis Arena. One fight is not every other fight.

NHL players fight to protect their players from the real thuggish on-ice acts (blatant boarding, elbowing, blows the head, etc.); fights are necessary to enable enforcers to protect their teammates--and NHL stars--like Sidney Crosby, like Marc Savard.

You sound like a fool. You are obviously not a fan of hockey and don't know anything about it. To call somebody uneducated because their opinion differs from yours shows nothing but arrogance on a grand scale.

This is funny. Why should the players have to protect each other from thuggish on-ice acts.

The rules should be changed so that if a player is caught doing these things they should be tossed from games, suspended for future games and lose salaries. That is how it should be enforced by the LEAGUE.

why are the psyche patients setting the rules in the asylum? The NHL is being irresponsible and catering to the savage nature of their players.

hockey has become a bore with its fighting. I can't help but think if the NBA, NHL, or NFL we would be talking about the "street thugs" who need to have their act cleaned up. Well, what's good for the goose....

Why not just forget about the hockey part. Have both teams line up at each end of the ice with their hockey sticks. Then blow a horn and both teams charge each other to club the opponents to the ice. Only five substitutions would be allowed. Divide the combat into 4 periods for repairs to equipment. medical attention and to carry off the unconscious to the hospital. The team that still has someone on their skates at the end wins! It could be called "Blood Sport On Ice". The fans will love it.

It wasn't meant to be funny. It was sarcasm directed to the owners who allow the continued violence and those fans who encourage it. Hockey is a good tough sport. The fighting does not make it better.

It would become the number 1 fan entertainment sport in the USA. Add young ladies in bikinis walking around the outside of the hockey ring and Americans would love it. I would be bigger than the SB for each telecast.

I hope to God it never is. It's for the slice of the population that understands it, and if it ever gets homogenized, it will kill the game.

I find it funny that the people that are commenting clicked on this link for the sole reason to watch the fights, yet they are whining about the fighting. If you really had a problem with it, you wouldn't have clicked the link and started the videos to begin with.

Instead, go watch some NASCAR- oh wait, not really a sport and most of their fans show up for the wrecks. Go watch some football- oh wait, they don't take off their helmets but instead put hits on each other every play which is the POINT of the sport. Go watch some basketball or soccer- oh wait, those are light-contact sports and even then they go after each other from time to time. Go watch some baseball- oh wait, thats ZERO contact and they still fight from time to time. Go watch some boxing or MMA- oh wait...

What's your point? None of those leagues allow full out brawls to happen like this on a regular basis. Hockey is my favorite sport. Its time to let the fighting go.

If hockey was truly your favorite, you would understand why they let them fight. Letting the players get their aggression out by dropping the gloves is far safer than them throwing a dangerous hit or using their stick. Having played many years of hockey I know this first hand- in school and youth leagues, where you are not allowed to fight, aggression is taken out with viscous hitting that many times lead to serious injury. Fighting in the pros offers a release valve that prevents this from happening.

What sport besides Major League Baseball allows brawling like this on a regular basis? The Whiter the league the more fights- isn't that ironic considering its NBA and NFL that gets labeled thugs because of their color of their players. True thuggery is alive and well in NHL

To answer you, boxing, MMA, martial arts, etc. Pretty simple.

Like it or not, fighting happens to be *part* of hockey, and has been since it began. If you dont like it, dont watch. Pretty simple how that works.

You are going after NHL players based on your personal opinion of what they do on the ice. The legal system goes after players for what they do as private citizens. Again, pretty simple.

Whats not so simple is why you are pulling the race card in this conversation or are generalizing the NBA and NFL players as thugs.

I can't believe the cops don't arrest these neanderthals for assault. (Yes, I'm prepared for all the hockey apologists to jump down my throat claiming that, although they fight on the ice, at least hockey players don't dogfight, stab one another in clubs, yadda yadda yadda. BTW, those are crimes, and they get prosecuted, as should some of these predictable fights in hockey.)

Tackling someone outside of a football stadium will probably get you arrested. Causing a car wreck would probably get you arrested. Throwing a baseball at someone's head will probably get you some charges. Slide tackling someone in the middle of the mall probably would land you in jail too.

Sports allow us to express aggression towards one another in socially acceptable ways, but stopping the action altogether so that punches can be thrown contravenes everything sports is theoretically about.

The Commissioner has lost his mind. A nine game suspension for a head-crushing elbow, followed by hitting the victim as he falls; a ten game suspension for merely attempting to protect the goalie from another winger. (Goalies only fight goalies and no one messes with your goalie.) Meanwhile, the best player in the NHL is out for months with two concussion for which the NHL issued . . . . no penalties . . . no fines . . . no suspensions. At this rate, Commissioner, the NHL will never keep a national TV contract and never be the skills game you want it to be. Skill players get crushed by goons and you do nothing. You think a "Winter Classic" will make up the difference? You must be dreaming.

While I agree with you to a certain degree...I think you are obviously a Pens fan, because of the double standard here. You complain about Crosby being out with concussions, but where were you when Matt Cooke pretty much ended Savards career? Did you call for penalties, fines and suspensions then? And Johnson obviously was willing to fight, he shook off his gloves, but having a guy come off the bench to make it two on one? Not cool.
BUT I agree with the other things you have to say, the Isles were dirty here. This game was out of hand and the NHL issued punishment that seems skewed to me as well.
