8 Awful Drug Trends

First Posted: 02/14/11 02:50 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:30 PM ET

Lately, it seems like some college students will try anything to get a thrill -- from fake weed to toiletries to alcoholic whipped cream.

We decided to take a look at the worst substance abuse trends in recent history and came up with eight that deserve a place in the hall of shame. Vote for the most offensive below, and remember: We always recommend hitting the books, not drugs. Because there's so much more to college than a nutmeg buzz.

Bath Salts
1 of 9
Don't be fooled by the benign moniker -- according to New York Sen. Charles Schumer, "so-called bath salts contain ingredients that are nothing more than legally sanctioned narcotics." Before you call the senator out for overreacting, consider that the effects of snorting bath salts are similar to those produced by ingesting cocaine and methamphetamines -- and that Florida, Louisiana and North Dakota have already implemented bans on the potential uppers.

I love Huff Post, but lumping DMT in with whippets, K2 and bath salts is downright nonsense.

How is nutmeg sweet?

Our Government is the biggest dope dealer in the world. The pharmaceutical companies make billions selling people drugs, that are more potent, with worse side effects. We don't know the long term effects of a lot of the drugs prescribed to us. Just because it was tested on a rat, and it didn't die, doesn't mean it's fit for human consumption. Every other week, we see a did you take this drug? Did you suffer one of these ailments? Call this lawyer immediately, commercials.

I was a pretty smart guy at one time, even scoring a 142 IQ. Then one friday night my roommate and a friend and I decided to do 300 Whip Its. The next morning I woke up with a massive headache and I have been a little dopey ever since. Two years ago I took an IQ test again and scored a 134. Whip Its dun gone took my brain away.

I'm sorry, what's so "awful" about K2? Are there actual health risks (other than inhaling burnt plant material), or is it just that kids are getting high and you don't like it? No info here about what's actually bad about it.

BTW, the whole adderall thing is much more widespread than I think most people realize, especially during finals week. I was at a table studying for finals with some friends, I think 6 of us there total, and 3 or 4 of them were on adderall. These are 3.5+ GPA students, star students in their majors. They spoke of how many people they know use it. Thing was, they had used it to stay up for days, and they were very unfocused, and hard to study with. One girl could hardly talk about anything other than the fact that she was on adderall. Seemed to defeat the purpose.

Rhetoric much?

Let's see an "Apples-to-Apples" comparison INCLUDING legal pharmaceutical drugs. Let's include statistics about addiction, liver damage, and death rates. Then let's take it a step further and include the economics of the situation.

Darwin says hi! The more dopes who trash themselves with this stuff, the more opportunity for me and mine! Keep up the good work!

Darwin says hi to you! If taking drugs were anti-evolutionary, you wouldn't see it. It's quite the other way around.

Maybe if marijuana and cocaine were legally available people wouldn't be using these "awful" substances. Note to young supporters of new drug policies: stop voting on facebook poles and vote in real elections.

st00pid article...our prisons are not filled with bath salts sniffers...no mention of the devastating effect prescription narcotics are having on our youth while the drug manufacturers profit.

Really? Except for bath salts (cause i don't know anything about them) and nutmeg (which no one wants to do) this is a list of some of the least harmful drugs. Sure there are side effects but legal anti-depression drugs can lead to suicide. The title of this list is the only thing that is truly awful.

Obviously whoever wrote this has never tried DMT...it's NOT a drug to take as a quick high, at least, not if you want to be functional afterwards. I'd find it hard to study for a test if I just went through 15 minutes reliving my own birth and then dying and then coming back to life.

Haha excellent post. I assume you've heard McKenna's various talks on DMT and what it does?

His description of culture as an operating system and DMT being the disc clearing device is a pretty remarkable analogy.

I don't think there are any efforts to do that--to get a psychoactive affect from nutmeg, you pretty much have to eat a whole can of it in one sitting. The hallucinations and euphoria are typically followed by hours of nausea and vomiting. Not the sharpest substance to abuse--I am surprised to see it in an article about college drugs, having always associated it with bored 14 year olds in the suburbs (sort of like model airplane glue...).

This list is ridiculous. Salvia and DMT do not belong on this list, yes DMT can raise your heart rate but not nearly as much as caffeine, why isn't coffee on there? The only reason anyone even uses that K2 and bath salts crap is because real weed (the safer alternative) is a schedule 1 drug for some reason. Nutmeg, guaranteed once is enough. Anti energy drinks? You mean like hard alcohol? The only thing that should be on here is Adderall and Ritalin which are prescribed like candy, why don't we address a real issue.
