Chicago Tea Party Endorses Gery Chico For Mayor, Slams Rahm Emanuel

The last Republican to serve as Mayor of Chicago was the deeply corrupt William "Big Bill" Thompson, who ended his term in 1931. Since then, the city has been run by what many call the "Democratic machine," and once again, there are no Republican mayoral candidates on the ballot.

Though conservative politicians may not thrive in the city, there are still conservative voters. Earlier this month, the Chicago Tea Party Patriots endorsed Democrat Gery Chico for mayor--and now, one of his opponents is using their support against him.

"Personally, this is an endorsement that I would never accept," candidate Miguel del Valle said during a Sunday press conference in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood. "The Tea Party's positions on everything from immigration reform to health care reform are not aligned with the needs and wants of the people of Chicago."

Catherina Wojtowicz, the often volatile leader of the Chicago Tea Party Patriots, explained the choice on the organization's website:

Gery Chico's opponent is Rahm Emanuel. We need to stand up to Barack Obama and the ObamaNation and say, "Not in my backyard!"

...

Chico, who is endorsed by the Chicago Police and Chicago Fire emergency personnel service members, know too well the issues that we, the taxpaying residents face. Chico has long endorsed turning a decades-long mandate that prohibits members from living outside of city limits. Presently, police and fire officers are forced to live within the city limits. Many of our tea party members, rank-and-file of the our city's finest and bravest have long wanted to have freedom to live and raise their families where they wish. Gery Chico is a friend to Chicago's police and fire officers!

Chico hasn't actually pledged to changing the city's residency requirement, he (along with Rahm Emanuel) has just said that he was open to discussing it further and potentially making changes to the policy. His progressive positions on gay rights, immigration, clean energy and abortion also clash with the Tea Party's positions.

"Gery has a record of building coalitions across racial, ethnic and party lines to achieve common goals," Chico's Press Secretary Brooke Anderson told HuffPost Chicago. "We welcome their support in addition to the broad range of support we have received from a diverse range of organizations, elected officials and residents as we fight to take Chicago in a new direction."

In responding to del Valle's comment, Anderson said Chico has fought for immigration reform throughout his life. On Sunday afternoon, Chico was actually at a rally with U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez, slamming Rahm Emanuel for "his failure to advocate for working families and immigration reform," according to a statement from his campaign.

In the endorsement of Chico, Wojtowicz wrote that "Chico is running to the right of Rahm Emanuel," but did not provide any examples of that being the case. She did praise Chico's fiscal policies and said that he is a "friend to businesses and taxpayers." The group is also seeking donations to "fight Rahm Emanuel."

During Sunday's press conference, del Valle said the Tea Party's endorsement of Chico signals "the need for a true progressive alternative" to "the Emanuel agenda."

I'm not surprised at all the uninformed Hpost commenters attacking Chico because of the endorsement. If they bothered to read anything they would realize that the Tea Party endorsed Chico only because he wants to change Chicago's ridiculous residency requirement. How can a city demand that it's employees live within the city limit's (and an expensive city too) while trying to lower their salaries and benefits?

Because a number of middle class neighborhoods would decline without the middle class city workers who live there? Because the people who provide services to city residents should maybe understand their lives, issues and needs? Because they are mostly involved middle class parents whose presence makes a contribution to schools and communities? There are a lot of reasons why the residency requirement is good policy.

No other job tells employees where to live. It is a policy that is reminiscent of something out of Soviet Russia. Besides how can the mayor tell a police officer to live in the same city where he arrests people? Several off-duty CPD officers have been attacked near their homes and this policy is the reason for it.

But, Chico has not pledged to do anything about the residency requirement. He, and Emanuel are open to discussion....did you bother to read anything? Because that's all in the article. The only reason the Tea Party has endorsed Chico is because of their agenda to end Obama's presidency. You cannot really think that these ultra conservatives actually believe in anything that Chico stands for. They are just doing anything that they believe to be anti-Obama.

Only in current debates has Chico said he would be "open" to changing the policy. Previously he has whole-heartedly supported the idea. I have no idea why anyone could support such a crazy and controlling policy.

See another reason to NOT support this guy. Thanks Tea for revealing.

Excellent reason to vote for someone else

Chico says that he will give laptops to all the students in Chicago. does Tea Party like that?

If you've never heard of Chico, then clearly you're not familiar with the mess we affectionately call Chicago Public Schools.

He was a former Board President of CPS until 2001.

Sounds like a baby Franco to me... This is what we need, real Fascism, in Chicago to truly stifle all development be it cultural or market. The markings of a primordial police state!!!

I almost threw up in my own mouth when Rahm bragged about how he fought for Wall Street reform.

I can see them now – Tea Party types – rubbing their hands together in glee…thinking and saying to themselves, “well, at least now they view us as a legitimate political party – a force to be reckoned with!” And you will be reckoned with, in the same manner that exterminators reckon with pests…

Given his acceptance of Tea Party endorsement, a vote for Chico is a vote for the continuance of institutional racism.

While it is certainly possible if not plausible that Chico is himself an Emanuel plant and/or agent, I remind you that the post of Mayor of the City of Chicago is far too important and consequential to award to an individual who would so easily climb into bed with racists. If it comes down to a contest between Messrs. Emanuel and Chico, I would urge you to vote for Mr. Emanuel.

I used to have a problem understanding the idea of “Real politic” – no longer; As much as I dislike Rham Emanuel, should it come down to a choice between him and Gary Chico, I’ll hold my nose and vote for Rham – not voting, is not an option. Hence, my (now) clear understanding of the term “Real politic”.

why does anyone want Rahm to win? He is a friend of the banksters. He also spent some time on the board of Freddie Mac . the following is a quote from the chicago tribune , 3/26/2009.

"One of those allegedly asleep-at-the-switch board members was Chicago's Rahm Emanuel—now chief of staff to President Barack Obama—who made at least $320,000 for a 14-month stint at Freddie Mac that required little effort."

I know the Tribune endorsed Rahm, but I still wonder why?

All true, but, still better than the maniac Chico; that's if (and only if) it comes down to a contest between those two.

I am not voting for Rahm. His banking and financial connections are the main reason. also he is too much like Daley. Whatever he does in office will benefit politically connected bankers and real estate developers. frankly, I have had enough of that kind of thinking . Not sure why you think Chico is a maniac.
