Giraffes On A Boat: 8 Rare Rothschilds Ferried To Kenyan Island (PHOTOS)

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Eight giraffes got a very rare ride to their new home – in a boat.

The endangered Rothschilds giraffes were ferried by barge to a reserve on an island in Kenya's Lake Baringo earlier this week.

Conservation leaders built a small pen on the barge that was covered in plastic sheeting. Only the giraffes' necks could be seen sticking out above the pen as they moved across the lake.

There are four females and four males in the group, and conservation leaders hope they will reproduce, said Elodie Sampere of the Northern Rangelands Trust. If the giraffes thrive, more may be taken to the island.

Rothschilds giraffes – also known as Baringo giraffes, after the lake – are listed as endangered. Only a few hundred remain in the wild.

Since I only see four in the photo I assume they're standing on the shoulders of the other four hidden behind the tent? Kind of waylays that whole "ooh, giraffes are so tall" nonsense.

There are probably two boats. One with the males and one with the females. I'm guessing this is the one with the females. I suspect the one with the males is still floating around refusing to ask for directions. ;^)

There are 8 giraffes in those pictures.

3 of them are ninjas.

1 was beaten by Chuck Norris.

May they live happily in their new home, produce many offspring, and never be bothered by human beings.

However, I'm curious about how they got them on that barge...the mental image is kind of funny.

so that's what it will take? Threat of mass extinction for humans to get it together and protect other species instead of trying to harm or abuse them.....we can start by stop stealing them from their families to cage them in zoos so humans can charge money to stare at them.

"Only a few hundred remain in the wild." We ungrateful humans have made such a toxic, ravaged wreck of this planet. We are disgusting. I hope this breeding attempt works, at least.
