Chandra Levy's Mother: Convicted Killer Ingmar Guandique May Not Have Murdered My Daughter

WASHINGTON - The mother of Washington intern Chandra Levy said Monday that she'd like to believe Ingmar Guandique is responsible for her daughter's death, but admitted she has a sliver of doubt.

Asked if she felt 100 percent certain the right man had been convicted of the crime, Susan Levy said on CBS' "The Early Show" Monday that, "To be honest, I always have that 5 percent of not being sure."

Guandique was sentenced Friday to 60 years in prison. He was convicted in November of first-degree murder in Levy's 2001 disappearance and death, despite a lack of witnesses and no DNA evidence linking him to the crime.

During Friday's sentencing hearing, Susan Levy confronted Guandique in an emotional exchange.

"She looked him in the eye, and she said, 'You know, you are a hideous creature. You are lower than a cockroach. You should rot in hell,'" said Sari Horwitz, co-author of "Finding Chandra, told CBS News." "It was very dramatic."

CBS News reports:

Sandra Levy then pleaded for the truth about Chandra's murder. "Did you really take her?" she asked. "Look into my eyes right now and tell me."

Guandique silently shook his head "No" in response.

When asked on CBS if she was convinced that Guandique had actually committed the crime, Levy responded: "Ninety-five percent I like to believe that the Justice Department is accurate. But there is that 5 percent."

She later said that her emotions about the death of her daughter still ran high.

"There's no closure, that's for buildings," Levy told CBS News. "You have a daughter that's tragically dead, there's never a sense of peace."

When this happened he seemed too concerned with covering up the affair than coming clean about his affair. Recall when he was found to toss things into a dumpster to get rid of evidence of their relationship? It is so hard to conceive how you can share intimacy yet care so little. Had he never been a suspect we'd never know. It does make me wonder about his past affairs

When this story broke it dominated the 24 hour news. Once Condit was cleared the wind went out of the sail. I think it's hard for her to imagine it is a "wrong time, wrong place" type situation when it initially appeared to be something that captured the interest of a nation. Sad situation.

So, testimony from a couple of cellmates which they gave in return for reductions in their own sentences is enough to get a murder conviction.

There are many things in this universe about which certainty can NEVER be had.

Here's one thing we can be certain of: You destroyed the reputation of an innocent man - Gary Condit - with your rants of certainty as to who was your daughter's murderer.

Of course, in the end, and in your certainty, YOU WERE WRONG. AND YOU SINGLE HANDEDLY DESTROYED AN INNOCENT MAN.

Even worse, you were so certain that you were right, that you influenced the DC police force to concentrate on Mr. Condit to the exclusion of any other clues which would have pointed to the actual killer of Chandra.
