I watched this (formerly X-rated, though more tame than a lot of PG-13, nowadays) movie back in the 70s or 80s--it's been a long time, so I'm not sure--and found it a fantastic and fabulous criticism of Latin America.  If I remember correctly, the screen play format preceeded that of the short story.  If you haven't seen La increible y triste historia de la candida Erendira y su desalmada abuela, and/or read the story, I strongly recommend it.  Enjoy!
