New York City Launches Mobile Phone App For Free C

Need a condom? If you live in New York City, there's an app for that!

The city's health department announced today that you can find free condoms using a new mobile app. The release of the "NYC Condom Finder" app coincided with Valentine's Day, also National Condom Awareness Day.

According to the NYC Health Department:

"NYC Condom Finder [is] a free smartphone application designed to locate the five nearest New York City venues that distribute free NYC Condoms. The application allows users to determine their location through either global positioning system (GPS) technology on their smartphone or by manually entering an address. The application also provides specific directions to each venue (the user can choose from walking, driving or public transportation directions), the hours of operation for each location, the types of safer sex products available and helpful tips on condom usage."

"We want New York City to be the safest city in the world to have sex," said the city's Assistant Health Commissioner Dr. Monica Sweeney. "A lot of people come here for that, so we want them to practice safer sex."

For the past five years, New York City has given out an average of three million condoms per month, Reuters reports.

Why is this in the book section?

This is great. Hopefully major cities around the world will follow NYC's lead.

Once a friend of my son (both are now grown) asked me to accompany him to an AIDS clinic because he needed to be tested after discovering a girl he'd had an affair with had also had an affair with a musician who mainlined heroin. I did. He passed the test. As we left the clinic, he reached into a basket of free condoms, took several, and put them in my pocket saying, "You need to be safe, too."

This was a boy I'd watched grow up - giving me condoms. My own parents would have been both shocked and incredulous. I loved it.

You can get free condoms at any free clinic. You don’t need an app for that.
03:21 PM on 02/15/2011
I'm sure the app offers more locations than just free clinics which would allow people the convenience of finding places closer to where they live, work, play.
03:34 PM on 02/15/2011
You still do not need an app for that. You can go on the nyc.gov site where they already provide this information. Furthermore, most of the venues mentioned are free clinics, community and health centers, and not-for-profits. Next…

So people that can afford a smart phone can't also afford to buy their own condoms?
06:42 PM on 02/15/2011
Just because they can afford it doesn't mean they don't want it for free!

This is going to make Kansas's head explode on a religious level and a Alabama's on a technological one.

You've been patrolling articles and looking for one to insert that little gem into haven't you?

Common sense? Sorry, no app for that.

They should have called it, "Rubber Match".

So the City creates a great app but doesn't monetize it. Come on people. link it to every porn site with a "pop up" ad and charge a fee. Deficit solved!

My eyes are an app that can see drugstore signs.
03:24 PM on 02/15/2011
Maybe the app is for people as responsible as you are but don't want to pay for them. I think this is a great tool for people to utilize and hopefully will help people avoid STDs.
06:35 AM on 02/15/2011
You mean the condoms that are too small and break easily?
07:48 AM on 02/15/2011
Too small? You don't put them on your fist.

There is one. It's called the "that kind of thinking won't get you there so do the opposite and I bet it might work" app.

Well, I found my problem with ED.
I had imported the danged horse from an old hollywood farm, and they went and taught him French.
ED went another three years until somebody dissed french fries one day, and went on a rampage, screaming at people, running down the street and screaming some more...

I'm telling you...a talking horse is one thing, But an angry screaming horse yelling in French is a sight to behold!
