Here is a new one based on something that was once said about religion: "Love is the opiate of the masses."

So the ruling classes have no need for love, is that what you are saying? No need to de-humanize the rich like that, Dennis.

"Nothing takes the taste out of peanut butter quite like unrequited love."

Love it.

My fave, and it's probably not horribly flattering to me, is "Ah me, love cannot be cured by herbs"--Ovid

I am already sick of love,
My very gentle Valentine,

Since for me you were born too soon,
And I for you was born too late.
God forgives he who has estranged
Me from you for the whole year.

I am already sick of love,
My very gentle Valentine,

Well might I have suspected,
That such a destiny,
Thus would have happened this day,
How much that Love would have commanded.

I am already sick of love,
My very gentle Valentine.

Possibly the world's first valentine, written by Charles, Duc d'Orleans, who was captured at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415 and held captive for 24 years in England, to his wife Bonne d'Armagnac, who died before his return to France. They had been married in 1410, when he was 16 and she was 18.

(Bonne was Charles's second wife -- he was married to 16-year-old Isabella de Valois, widow of Richard II of England, when he was 12. She died in childbirth 3 years later.)

My favorite was the Mark Twain one: "To get the full value of a joy you must have somebody to divide it with." Love it :)

I'd also like to share some of my favorite love quotes by one of my favorite poets, the Persian/Afghan poet, Rumi. His poems bring tears to the eyes and chills to the soul.

“Your task is not to seek love, but to remove all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.”

“This is love: to fly toward a secret sky, to cause a hundred veils to fall each moment. First to let go of life. Finally, to take a step without feet.”

“The minute I heard my first love story I started looking for you, not knowing how blind that was. Lovers don't finally meet somewhere. They're in each other all along.”

"You come to love not by finding the perfect person, but by seeing an imperfect person perfectly."

I find this one to be the most profound. The thought that a perfect person exists to sweep us off of our feet, is a juvenile belief. The reality is, that true love involves caring so deeply for another, that we accept their faults regardless.

So true. Told a friend once who commented that my husband must be perfect, "No, he's just perfect for me. Perfectly imperfect." He has the same attitude. It has allowed us to thrive, and to get beyond those first stages without crestfallen regret. We have been together for 10 years.

It is no coincidence that you've come to this realization, while simultaneously enjoying 10 years of marital happiness. Your testimonial is inspiring.

17 years and counting - how one couple kept the love alive - while also wanting to kill each other at times! This is REAL love...

As I grew into adulthood, I thought that I would never again be able to relate to or moved by the words of Dr. Seuss. I stand corrected. A beautiful quote. And so true.

Buddha gives this quote a thumbs up.

"To love is to suffer. To avoid suffering, one must not love. But, then one suffers from not loving. Therefore, to love is to suffer, not to love is to suffer, to suffer is to suffer. To be happy is to love, to be happy, then, is to suffer, but suffering makes one unhappy, therefore, to be unhappy one must love, or love to suffer, or suffer from too much happiness.

I like that one too. A person who keeps looking for complete happiness will be miserable but a person who can enjoy random moments of companionship, pleasure and joy and laugh at the things that go wrong will be almost completely content.
