Huge Solar Flare Erupts, Sun's Most Powerful In 4 Years (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 02/15/11 02:34 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:30 PM ET

The sun released the most powerful solar flare in 4 years last night, a spectacular event that was captured by NASA.

While the sky darkened Valentine's Day, the sun remained active. The flare caused a wave of radiation, which hit Earth in just minutes, and sent a wave of charged particles that should hit Earth within 24 hours, according to Space.com.

But don't panic. The occurrence will potentially cause little more than a spectacular show of the aurora borealis, which could spread as far south as the Northern United States.

From Space.com:

The mega flare, which registered as a Class X2.2 flare on the scale of solar flares, was the first class X flare to occur in the new solar cycle of activity, which began last year. The sun is now ramping up toward a solar maximum around 2013.

"It has been the largest flare since Dec 6, 2006, so a long time coming," said Phil Chamberlin, deputy project scientistfor NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, which observed the flare. "There were some clues that led us to believe the likelihood of moderate to large flares (M class or above) could occur, but we were all surprised when it actually happened to be a large X-class."

Check out some absolutely incredible images of the solar event below, from NASA.

UPDATE: According to BBC News, in addition to an amplification of the Northern Lights, power grids and communications could be disturbed in the coming days.

I see things. Do you see what I see. The photos are great and they are fun. Take a look at them five - ten seconds and do you see what I see.

Love the rock out here in So.east Utah. All sorts of images can be convoluted up. Well some of these sun photos are a trip. And don't let my screen name elicit a big Uh Ah. Take a look.

Who's the doofus that scheduled this when the moon is up? That will greatly diminish the show, although it could still be spectacular. God screws up yet again.

um... the solar flare is happening now.

it's 2011.

And, um ... solar flares will have no particularly discernible effects for us humans, other than some pretty lights in the sky if you're far enough north and it's not cloudy. Ok, and if you use satellite for your internet, your connection's going to be laggier than usual for a couple of days.

If nothing else, the Mormon warning to be prepared for a disaster of some kind by stocking a year's supply of food, water, clothing, etc., appears to be common sense.
I've been doing so, but now I suspect all those two-for-one restaurant coupons won't be of any value when disaster strikes, and will have to begin growing vegetables in the back yard instead of lawn (I was going to say grass but that invites suspicion) and storing the surplus in the basement, for use later on -- not only for if/when a solar storm wipe out electricity and communication grids (no ATMS) but if future hyperinflation collapses the value of emergency cash many of us have in the bank.

a tub of peanut butter, with its 50%/25/25 mix of fat/protein/carbs and fairly nutritious makeup can feed a person for a month. in an extended emergency, a few dozen can feed a family for a year and largely make growing food unnecessary. add a few large multivitamin bottles, a few large analgesic bottles, and you have the basics for a year's survival for under $200.

and peanut butter can last for ten years if unopened.

Organic peanut butter is even better.
This is very good advice for digging your way out of debt, too. Why wait for the Big One, when there's every reason to start now.

One of the most spectacular aurora borealis displays I've ever seen happened a few years ago in Southern Vermont in October. You never know...sometimes you get rewarded by these sun flares.
