SXSW Defends Comedy Lineup Against Allegations Of Sexism

Tig Notaro
Tig Notaro, the only woman booked (so far) for this year's SXSW comedy lineup

South By Southwest released its 2011 comedy lineup yesterday and it features an impressive list of professional as well as up-and-coming comedians, along with satellite editions of hit alternative shows such as Scott Aukerman's "Comedy Death Ray" and Marc Maron's "WTF Podcast."

But according to some comedians and fans, the lineup was demonstrably light in one particular area, and, as usual, twitter was the place to air grievances.

Within moments of the announcement, comedian Sara Benincasa tweeted: "Jesus. SXSW Comedy booked one female this year. One." Writer and comedian Todd Levin posted one of the more RT'd tweets of the day: "Congrats, @SXSW, on this year's comedy bookings. 31 comics announced, including one female performer. Brave!" And New York comedian Jessi Richardson had a slightly more sardonic take: "To be fair, @sxsw did invite other female comics to perform, but they were ALL on maternity leave."

After remaining silent most of the day, SXSW released an official response last night via their Web site:

If you follow SXSW, you may know that our initial announcements are rarely complete, and this year is no exception. While we're proud of the roster of great comedians set to join us in Austin next month, we were disappointed by the fact that we could only include one woman in our initial release.

Nevertheless, the original press release announcing the lineup had no language indicating that the list was yet to be finalized or that it was subject to change, which is fairly standard. If organizers knew they had a problem with the number of women, it might have behooved them to include a line indicating that a more complete lineup was in the works.

The SXSW statement went on to say:

Unfortunately, we had just three female comedians apply in our open process this year. We'd love to see that number increase every year. That said, we did reach out to several who just couldn't make it work due to scheduling.

But some in the comedy community consider that assertion to be dubious at best. Comedian and co-creator of "The Daily Show" Lizz Winstead told us she would like to ask more questions:
It saddens me immensely as hilarious women are everywhere you turn. Stand up, sketch, all forms of social media. It's a no brainer. I would like an answer to the following questions: 'How many women did they reach out to, who declined, who bailed at the last minute, and why they couldn't or didn't feel the need to find an equitable balance of male to female?'

SXSW is one of the premiere music, film and comedy festivals in the country, and performing there is often a signature achievement in an artist's career. In the past, the festival roster has included comedians like Morgan Murphy, Maria Bamford, Margaret Cho, Kristen Schaal, Janeane Garofalo and many more. And it's that fact that is perhaps what has made this year's oversight so shocking to many. Benincasa elaborated on this point via email:
I try to stay away from complaining about the treatment of female comics, because if you want to play in this game you need to recognize that it is largely a male sport. It's like a girl who joins a high school football team. She knows what she's signing up for, and chances are, she enjoys the company of dudes. But the SXSW thing kinda bums me out. They've booked women in the past. It's just weird.

Chelsey Delaney, who will host a panel at SXSW Interactive this year, told us that the issue is a perennial problem, but also echoed Benincasa's sentiment that this particular case stands out:
The SXSW conference is usually male-dominated in general (specifically interactive and comedy) and I think last year the organizers realized the weight of the problem. This year organizers made clear and explicit statements on the importance of diversity, particularly gender diversity. That's why the comedy lineup is bizarre; It's so insanely unbalanced that it can't possibly be what we think, or at least, I hope not.

Whether the lack of women on the lineup is a result of actual sexism, scheduling conflicts, or simply a huge oversight, the overall point is that SXSW has some re-evaluating to do before the festival begins in March. Comedian and author Julie Klausner gave us her thoughts:
Whether or not it was an oversight, it is egregious, dumb and mean to deprive female comics of the exposure, the work, and the access to delicious breakfast tacos that a slot on the SXSW comedy lineup brings along with it.

Finally, Winstead brought the issue full circle:
I just hope it's not a woman who is booking it. That would really ice the shit cake.

What do you think? Was this sexism? An honest mistake? Are critics jumping the gun on a problem that the festival is in the process of solving? Answer the poll and then weigh in with your comments.

Quick Poll

Why is there only one woman in the SXSW comedy lineup?

Straight-forward sexism

They didn't realize they only had one woman in the lineup, which is also sexism

Leave them alone, they aren't finished yet!

Who cares?

Women aren't funny (also, I am an idiot)

Thankfully, Austin hosts it's own Womens Comedy Festival, LAFF (http://ladiesarefunnyfest.wordpress.com) on May 5, 6, and 7. Women from all over the nation will be flocking here to make people laugh.

I like more guy comedians then girls in comedy but I have a feeling it's because I've been exposed to so many more of them. Because comedy is tricky - I find that 90% of comedians suck. Withnso few woman, added in with the fact that most people are not really that good to begin with, it's a tough gig for anyone, especially a girl. Put more on t.v., online and in these festivals - I'm positive if we were exposed more it would all equal out.

As a side note, it's always irked me that they had two female stand-ups (Mary-Lynn Rajskub and Janeane Garofolo) cast on the TV show 24 as the computer-savvy systems analyst - implying that female comedians are so unfunny that they can only function in a counter-terrorism force as computer geeks.

Utterly and shamelessly sexist.

Why didn't they book Judy Tenuta?

She's pure comic genius

So they didn't ask Margaret Cho, Mimi Gonzales, Kate Clinton, Kathy Griffin, or any of the HUNDREDS OF OTHER FEMALE COMEDIANS to participate?

SXSW- Not just sexist, but also STUPID.

From the SXSW press release:
"Comedians perform at SXSW for fun, not for money."
Further evidence that women don't like fun.

So I just read this thread of a bunch of un-funny non-stand up comedian males making sexist comments on an article on sexism in comedy. The fact that they don't get it is the funniest joke of all.
11:08 AM on 02/20/2011
I have to say I knew they would be here on the thread -I read it anyway. Seeing how some mommy dearest worked over junior is just like seeing a car accident scene. It is repulsive but you can't tear your eyes from it. Have to say I am happy I am already married.

Yeah. I'm glad to say the male comedians I know in NYC aren't like this. I'm sure they exist but I have (thankfully) yet to deal with them.

I love Jessi Richardson's remark about how women were asked and they're all out on maternity leave!

If their claim that only three women applied to be in this thing is true, then this is a non-story.

It is a non-story. You really can't make the "Keep Austin Weird" folks politically correct. This is silly.

"... After remaining silent most of the day, SXSW released an official response last night via their Web site:..."

"Sorry, dudes," the response said. "but chicks just ain't funny. All they do is tell mean stories about dudes."

The web site was later shut down by an overload of posted complaints from angry women ... when the web site came back up again, the official response said, "See, dudes. I toldja that chicks didn't have no sense of humor."

This is exactly what Dave Foley did. And he wasn't funny either.

Off the top of my head I can't think of a single (current) female stand-up comic.

So the question is...is it because, generally speaking, women don't pursue stand up comedy careers (which frankly, I don't believe) or is it because comedy clubs are way more reluctant to book women to begin with? Can't have a stand up career if you can't get booked in the clubs.

I think its because many female comics have a different type of sense of humor. Sometimes there's more subtlety involved and tends to generate knowing chuckles as opposed to big guffaws. Like FarmerBee, I can't think of the names of many current women who are well-known on the stand-up circuit, but I can think of great female comics from the past: Phyllis Diller, Lily Tomlin, Roseanne Barr ... notice I'm leaving out Joan Rivers, who is vulgar and nasty but not really funny ...

I can also picture, in my mind, many entertaining female stand-up comics who appeared on Comedy Central's shows, but most of their names are a blur. Of course, Comedy Central has so many standup comics, male and female, that most of their names run together anyway.

I just thought of a current female stand-up comic: Kathy Griffin. She's over-the-top and really vulgar at times, but she gets the laughs.

They just named a bunch of them in that article. There are also comediennes among the casts of SNL, the Daily Show and Mad TV.

"In the past, the festival roster has included comedians like Morgan Murphy, Maria Bamford, Margaret Cho, Kristen Schaal, Janeane Garofalo and many more."

I think it just might not have occurred to them to make a point of including women in the roster to reflect the female demographic.

Hairy couple jokes are a difficult technique to handle. Only the most skilled and talented comedians can master such raw and in-your-face comedic subject.

Comedy is notoriously sexist. Tina Fey broke the glass ceiling. Off the top of my head, the only male host I can think of that has a woman writer in a high position on staff is Colbert. Letterman? Fuggedaboutit!!

Agreed, although Tina Fey is primarily an actress/writer, not a standup comic. She did do a great monologue at the American Comedy Awards, however.

wow here I was concerned about the federal deficit and reforming our foreign policy and I completely missed how a pretty awesome comedy festival has turned anti-vagina

There are simply more great male comedians than female , and more medicre ones too.

Most comedy bills would love to have more female acts but could only do so by lowering the standard of comedy.

There a very few funny women.

and very few great female car mechanics or mathematicians...

There are also very few men who can still grow moustaches that make them look like they should never work in a daycare.

And ah, yes, Larry the Cable Guy. HUGE bar set there. Really wish I could write as many funny sh#t and fart jokes as he does.

Here's one of mine: "When I go to church out of respect for my parents, I tend to fantasize about sex all through mass. With my luck, I'm going to go to hell for that where, for the rest of eternity, I will have sex all the time and wont be able to stop fantasizing about church."

Pretty good for a girl, don't you think? Veronica Mosey. One of a handful of female comics working regularly at all of the major clubs in New York City. Its a shame your so closed-minded.

I agree about Larry but he doesn't enjoy widespread popularity---only among a subculture I am loathe to describe. Only a few would hold him out as an example of a great comedian.
