Jackie Speier On Sharing Her Pregnancy-Termination Story: 'It Just Overwhelmed Me'

Speier

First Posted: 02/18/11 05:34 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:35 PM ET

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Jackie Speier listened to debate on the House floor on Thursday evening as a Republican Rep. Chris Smith read a long, detailed description of an abortion and a "mangled image of a dead, tiny baby." Finally, Speier stood up and told her colleagues she had undergone an abortion in the early 1990s following a complication nearly four months into her pregnancy.

"As the night wore on, the vitriol and grotesque commentary got worse and worse," Speier, a second-term Democrat from California, told HuffPost. "I sat there thinking, none of these men on the other side have even come close to experiencing this, and yet they can pontificate about what it's like. It just overwhelmed me."

Speier underwent an abortion in her early 40s, while she was serving in the California State Assembly. The procedure used to terminate the pregnancy was the same type that Smith's book described. As she listened, Speier said she became more emotional and made the decision to speak out.

"This was a wanted pregnancy, it was the second miscarriage I had had," she told HuffPost. "What they express doesn't come close to the experience that a woman goes through when she is losing a baby or when a pregnancy is terminated. It's a painful, gut-wrenching loss."

She said she had spoken publicly about her experience with abortion only once before, while debating late-term abortion in the California state legislature.

After she told her story, Speier said many colleagues -- both male and female -- offered their support, some saying she put tears in their eyes. One Republican told her the amendment was inappropriate, she said, while Smith, whose remarks caused her to speak up, said nothing.

As a longtime supporter of abortion rights, Speier said she was frustrated to see a debate over funding descend into a moral debate over a woman's right to choose. The amendment under debate, proposed by Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.), was to strip Planned Parenthood of its federal funds -- even though they are already barred from being used for abortion.

The amendment passed on Friday in a 240-185 vote but will likely be blocked in the Senate, where Democrats hold a majority.

"A continuing resolution is a mechanism to allow the government to continue to operate," Speier told HuffPost. "It should not be a vehicle for political rhetoric and high drama that was exhibited last night on an issue that was unrelated to the federal budget. It didn't create one job, it didn't reduce the deficit, so what was the point?"

(Note: The account of the fetus moving from the vagina to cervix appears to be anatomically impossible. Speier is likely referring to movement from the uterus to the cervix)

No one should be able to legislate what a woman can or cannot do, especially when that decision may cost her her life.

So much rhetoric about how there was a "death panel" in Health care was of course false.

The real "death panels" are the anti abortion advocates. Wherefore it is safe to assert that there is a "death panel" and those advocating against abortion are it's real proponents.

Instead of trying to take women kicking and screaming backwards, let them have the same rights men do regarding their bodies.

I don't see anyone advocating sterilizing men with large families, say anything over 4 children, 5 children, 6 children, 8 or 10. Once you start it's hard to stop.

Women who don't want abortions are free not to have them, but don't force women who want or need one to carry through even if it kills them.

I hate to admit this, it pains me deeply, but Darwin was wrong about evolution, it seems like the GOP just have not evolved with the rest of us.

We can't get birth control from a low-cost provider like planned parenthood, & then we can't get the right to terminate a pregancy whether it's because we have health issues for ourselves or because the child is suffering from birth anomalies. Isn't this all to personal? What about what our personal healthcare provider thinks best for our overall personal health both physically and mentally?

Jackie Speier is brave, eloquent and lucid. What a treat! Thank you, R. Speier. These unctuous types going around preaching about abortion so completely miss the point. Again, thank you, Ms. Speier. NOBODY wants abortions. That's one reason Planned Parenthood is so vital. It prevents abortions by helping women with birth control and with placement, with counseling and nurturing....what is wrong with everybody? Why are these people so simplistic?

Speak about utter HYPOCRISY: you have an ad about saving the life of a baby in an article that praises a woman that kills one od hers before it is born.

Abortion is the new slavery. In fact, it's even WORSE, 'cuz the person being killed is unable to fight back.

Congratulations you would have just mocked slaves everywhere and the horrors they endure.

You would have, that it, is your statement made any sense. But, it does not. Slaves provide the benefit of their labor for little to no compensation. What labor is extracted from an embryo?

I swear, you conservatives will redefine any word you can just so you can make an inappropriately emotional argument. I guess that's what one does when facts and logic doesn't provide support for one's argument.

That's a question I ask conservative women all the time.
If you are a one and you vote.
PROGRESSIVE women fought for and WON that right.
The con 'white patriarchy' didn't celebrate that victory.

PP mostly does things such as pap smears, mammograms and std testing. As someone who lives in a small conservative town I can tell you that without the relative anonymity of PP there would be less std testing and that is NOT a good thing.

Ummm I'm not sure how she claims it doesn;t reduce the defecit?

They are trying to cut funding for PP right?

You would think that would lower the defecit...Am I missing something? (seriously)

It will ultimately increase the deficit further.

Pregnancy complications are more expensive than normal pregnancies. Most women do not have insurance to see them safely through a pregnancy. Kids born with *preventable* birth defects are very costly especially if their birth defects are so severe that they will require a lifetime of assisted care, medicines, and specialized equipment just to live. PP contributes hugely to public health by helping woman have healthy pregnancies & babies.

Unwanted children in families already too big and too poor to afford them are more likely to end up abused, even killed - which the taxpayer pays for directly & indirectly.

Women, girls, men and lad get cancer of their reproductive systems. For the poor & for the taxpayer, its a cheaper option to get a diagnosis there, than to wait and to to the ER.

Family planning saves the American taxpayer huge sums of money, far beyond its funding amount and it has for decades. Republicans have excluded *that fact* deliberately.

The last thing this was not about was saving money. It was a political attack, pure and simple.
05:11 AM on 02/19/2011
You have no facts to support anything you just said.

You also assume family planning disappears.

It doesn't.

PP can survive without government funds, they just might have to increase the cost of abort_ions by a few bucks.

What you are missing is that Planned Parenthood provides other medical services for poor women...as much as the would-be mind-benders would have you believe its sole reason for existing is to provide abotions for the sexually promiscuous, IN REALITY it provides birth control counseling (that would lessen the reasons for abortions), and also gives mammograms, and other tests and medical services. These services must be provided (and paid for) by somebody.

What you might also be missing is the FACT that if the richest of the rich and the big corporations paid their fair share, and if Republicans stopped dragging us into endless wars of choice, there would be little to no deficit to worry about. The stuff that Republicans are trying to cut amounts to a tiny amount of the total, AND, THEY are hoping that YOU forgot that huge tax cuts to the richest of the rich and allowing big corporations to hire a PO box in the Caymans as a way to pay NO US taxes, is all their idea too. They refuse to budge.

Ever since Reagan, Republicans have permitted their big contributors (and other richest of the rich) to avoid taxes....THAT is the reason for the deficit...not the pittance that we spend on safety nets for the poor.... reason is money that ought to be coming in, but isn't because of Republican attempts to make middle and working classes pay the whole cost of running our government.
12:06 PM on 02/19/2011
What you are missing is that those services are provided elsewhere. PP does not have a monopoly on the condom/ birth control market. Nor are they the only place that provides mammograms.
They are the nations largest abortion providers. They do condon the child sex trade, statutory r_ape, and under age prostit-ution (watch the videos)

You are right though, the mammograms, other tests, and medical services will end up being paid for by the tax payer eventually.

But these services should be provided by local doctors and hospitals.

PP receives 33% of their money through federal funding.

Funding that is fungible and most certainly helps provide abortions.

Federal Money should not being going to an orginization that is the biggest abortion provider in the US, and just happens to do a few other medical procedures.

You act like without PP these women would have nowhere to go to get a condom of a prescription for birth control.

"but isn't because of Republican attempts to make middle and working classes pay the whole cost of running our government."

top 5% pay 95% of taxes.
50% of the country pays no taxes.

still think the working class payes for the whole cost of running the government?

dawlishgal,
Whenever a rwinger cites some "fact", always check it.

illogical below says the top 5% pay 95% of the taxes. Look it up. His source is Rush Limbaugh. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, on the other hand, says that the middle class pay (in absolute dollars) most of the taxes. During the Reagan years, it was the middle class and the poor, but now it's mostly the middle class.

Even during the (Republican administration of) Eisenhower years, when the highest tax bracket was something like 95%, the rich weren't paying 95% of the taxes.

I don't understand the accolades over this congresswoman's speech. I cringed when she said, "there are many on our side of the aisle who don't like Haliburton and Haliburton is responsible for extortion and bribery....but do you see us over here filing amendments to wipe out funding for Haliburton? No because frankly that would be irresponsible."
WTH? A cringe inducing closer for the win.
No, Ms. Speier, we don't see you filing amendments to wipe out funding. In fact, we don't see you doing much at all of vaule with respect to the American peoples' pocketbook or quality of life, unless it touches a personal experience or value set. Same political coin, different side.
06:52 AM on 02/19/2011
Very well-stated. Two politicians who are both contributing to the zillion man-hours squandered by our politicians puffing their chests to solicit hurrahs from their respective choirs. In the meantime, Haliburton continues to cash its blank checks from the government, positioning to get their next Dick Cheney into office, and enjoying their huge tax breaks. Haliburton can rest easy, knowing that the Speiers and Smiths of the world will be dedicating most of their time and energy swapping abortion stories.

The Republicans, with their lack of scruples re lying and manipulation (who else would give big bucks to a Karl Rove?). have the upper hand here, partly because they control so much of the mass media. But one of the HUGE problems is the relative visibility of people who need safety nets, compared to the invisibility of the rich who are laughing all the way to the bank. Working people wake up cranky and are reminded that some people don't have to go to work (nevermind that most of them would rather be able to work), and they are ready targets for the slime spewn by the Limbaughs and the Becks. Of course, they rarely (if ever) witness the Swiss banking activity of the people who really are bleeding this country dry.

compare the amount given for social safety nets to the amount that the rich and the big corporations get away with not paying.....it is laughable that Republicans say that when it comes to huge tax cuts and tax shelters, the deficit is not a problem, and that we can compensate by gutting PBS.

And when you are done with that comparison....compare how much of our national treasure is owned by the rich people nowadays to how much was owned when this country was a functioning democracy. What happened? Politicians think that they have to protitute themselves to the rich and the big corporations or they will lose the next election to people who do.
