Oregon Congressman David Wu's Staffers Urged Him To Obtain Psychiatric Help: Report

02/19/11 12:37 AM ET   AP

PORTLAND, Ore. — Senior staffers of U.S. Rep. David Wu were so alarmed over the Oregon Democrat's erratic behavior just days before the November election that they demanded he enter a hospital for psychiatric treatment, a newspaper reported Friday evening.

The Oregonian, citing interviews with a number of anonymous staff members, reported on its website that Wu was increasingly unpredictable on the campaign trial and in private last fall, and had several angry and loud outbursts and sometimes said "kooky" things to staff and potential voters and donors. A similar report was carried on the Willamette Week newspaper's website on Friday.

The fact that Wu was in the middle of a difficult re-election campaign from his Portland-area district made his behavior particularly worrisome to staff who organized a meeting with the congressman at his campaign headquarters on Oct. 30, with a psychiatrist joining by speaker phone.

"This is way beyond acceptable levels and the charade needs to end NOW," wrote Lisa Grove, a senior and long-serving campaign pollster, in an e-mail to colleagues the day of the meeting. "No enabling by any potential enablers, he needs help."

Wu was defiant and left the meeting, saying he was going to a movie, sources told The Oregonian.

The newspaper said its account was based on interviews with multiple sources who worked for Wu in his congressional office and his campaign. The people interviewed talked on the condition they not be named, and The Oregonian said their stories were consistent and backed up by e-mails.

The newspaper said the 55-year-old Wu declined to be interviewed for its story. But his office provided a statement late Friday with the congressman saying he hasn't always been at his best with staff and constituents and that he has sought professional medical care.

"Some of my stress was derived from a very tough campaign, but I was also dealing with raising two children alone and the death of my father," Wu said in the statement. "I fully acknowledge that I could have dealt with these difficult circumstances better."

After the Oct. 30 meeting, the campaign essentially shut down, the newspaper said. While no public announcement was made, Wu did not have another formal campaign event until he emerged on the night of Nov. 2 after winning a seventh term.

Since the election, Wu has lost at least six staffers, including his longtime chief of staff, Julie Tippens, and communications director, Julia Krahe, both in Washington, D.C. The Oregonian earlier reported that Wu also has lost nearly the entire political team that has been with him for more than a decade, including chief fundraiser Lisa Kurdziel and Grove.

Looks like Charles Martel 732 commented the very words that were on the tip of my typing pen! Maybe somebody ought to investigate EXACTLY why the staffers left and EXACTLY what they accuse Wu of, or whether some unnamed operatives simply just paid them off to be disloyal. The reason Oregonians voted for Wu is because the Republican alternative was infinitely worse, and still would be. I suppose if we had been offered the choice of Thom Hartmann vs. David Wu, we might have voted for the former. So Wu is stalwart enough to call the Klingons as he sees them? He should be ashamed of himself for not calling them what they really are - Reptilians. So Wu watches Star Trek? Ooooo - now there's a big sin. So Wu sometimes gets a little temperamental - gosh, has any politician ever done that before? Maybe we should ask around. Is that the most substantial complaint his ex-staffers have in their arsenal? Double-ooooooo. This sounds like just more political spin to me, generated by the permanently mentally ill GOP.

Funny how the Oregonian waited until 90 days after the election to publish this story. Why do I suspect that if it was a GOP Congressman they would have run with the story at the time?

I think this politics has driven many crazy...including me. As a Democrat, all I do is play "defense" against the lies on non-principles children, who call them self Right Wing Republicans.

Oh good grief. Drama much?

There are some really insensitive comments on here. I'm not sure why HP pretends to moderate. That said, David Wu is seeking professional help as of the latest reports. He has served Oregon well and I wish him the best.

Surprised but kudos to AP, they actually included "... Democrat's..." in the first paragraph instead of, when the context is negative, hiding Democratic party affiliation somewhere in paragraph 5 +.

Having a Republican affiliation is intrinsically negative.

Very sad. Sometimes mental illness is accompanied by total lack of insight, which becomes replaced by people pretending to have insight into their actions and saying things that they believe will convince others that they are not ill. For example, delusional people many times do not share their delusions with their psychiatrist, thus keeping that person on their side, by not showing them their illness. Just because one is ill does not mean they are stupid. People who persist in believing that everyone else in the world is wrong and they alone are correct in their thought processes, which is part of the definition of lack of insight - those people have a very low percentage rate of being "cured". And sometimes medications stop working, even if a person takes it - which is very doubtful if they fail to see that they are ill. So it is sad, and hard to know how to help.

Good for those staffers! He clearly needs mental help. Too bad the rest of the Democrat caucus' staffers aren't that responsible!

Funny that an article is allowed that just plain ruins a person's reputation with hearsay, and gossip.  Why is this not libel?

GIN.....it is libel when somebody says it. It is MALICE when it is printed. The Oregonian has always had a hard on for Wu for whatever reason.

If it's true it's not malice or libel.

Dude.... Legally,SLANDER( also known as defamation of character) is the public uttering of a false statement that harms the good reputation of another. The law imposes a general duty on all persons to refrain from making false defamatory statements about others. Breaching this duty orally is the wrongdoing called SLANDER..

LIBEL is defamation in writing or in pictures, signs, films or any other communication that has the potentially harmful qualities of written or printed words.

Actual MALICE is a statement --that is made with either knowledge of its falsity or a reckless disregard for the truth.

SLANDER is also unprotected speech under the First Amendment.

Sheesh.  Why are people so obsessed with their tax paying status?  These costs are nothing compared to the wars you are funding.  Why not include those in your list?
02:44 AM on 02/20/2011
Yes, that's really a big hint as to the real agenda of such commenters. The incredible ability to ignore the wars - or even justify their costs. Also not sure why people justify the lack of taxes paid by corpos that have the biggest profits in years during a depression. This all happened in the past over and over again. Ever learn?

This is a good example of one time when it might be suitable to have a method by which a recently elected candidate might be removed. Thinking of Walker in Wisconsin here but the notion that an election should determine the permanent right of an official to remain in office or have his policies be supported without question might be debatable.
04:16 AM on 02/20/2011
You people are clueless. Walker and Wu have nothing in common. Walker made it clear all along what he was about. Wu's behavior of late has been out of character, and he has already sought medical treatment. Wu's condition is treatable; Walker's character is not.
