Rage Against The Machine Guitarist Tom Morello Coming To Wisconsin: 'Madison Is The Next Cairo'

First Posted: 02/20/11 01:54 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:35 PM ET

MADISON, WIS. - For the past week, the protests outside of the Wisconsin statehouse have had a background soundtrack of Bruce Springsteen, Journey and even the Beastie Boys blasting from speakers as marchers walk around chanting "Kill the bill!" and "Recall Walker!" But on Monday, Madison will get some live music -- a concert headlined by Tom Morello, the guitarist for Rage Against the Machine.

For nearly a decade, Morello has also been playing political folk music -- inspired by people like Woodie Guthrie and Mother Jones -- under the alias The Nightwatchman. On his Facebook page, fans had been urging him to come out and support them in Madison before he made his announcement.

"Hey Tom, could you please come to Madison?" read a message by a fan named Ryan Loew. "As I'm sure you're aware, Scott Walker is trying essentially to de-unionize."

"Tom, please come to Madison!" read another posting by Mike Tapia. "The national news are not covering this the way they should be. We need your voice! To get on the national front. First person I thought of writing to was President Obama, which I did, at a close second came you!"

In an interview with The Huffington Post on Saturday, Morello explained that the fight for collective bargaining rights is personal for him. He's a member of Professional Musicians Local 47 in Los Angeles, and his mother worked at a public high school in Illinois for more than 30 years.

"I really think that the future of the rights of working people in this country is not going to be decided in the courts," he said. "It's not going to be decided in Congress or radio talk shows. The future of rights of working people in this country will be the fight on the streets of Madison, Wis. "

On Saturday, Morello said he also received an e-mail of encouragement from one of the principle organizers of the protests in Cairo, Maor Eletrebi. "Madison is the next Cairo," observed Morello. He said Eletrebi wanted him to share his message with the protesters, which was addressed to "our friends in Madison, Wis."

"I wish you could see firsthand the change we have made here," read Eletrebi's e-mail, which Morello read to The Huffington Post. "Justice is beautiful, but justice is never free. The beauty of Tahrir Square you can have everywhere, on any corner, in any city, or in your heart. So hold on tightly and don't let go. ... Breathe deep, Wisconsin, because justice is in the air. And may the spirit of Tahrir Square be in every beating heart in Madison today."

Morello said he was willing to play in Indiana, Ohio, or any other state fighting for workers' rights. "Wherever The Nightwatchman is needed, The Nightwatchman will be," he said.

Morello has been closely following the controversy in Wisconsin and was excited to hear that the statehouse in Madison was still loud and energetic with protesters. He was skeptical of Gov. Scot Walker's (R) assertion that restricting the collective bargaining rights of public employees was necessary to fill the state's deficit, noting that he supported millions of dollars in tax breaks for corporations.

"So clearly, the issue isn't the state budget," said Morello. "It's breaking the right of working people to stand up to corporate power. That's what they want to do, and that's what we're not going to let them do."

Monday's concert is being organized by the labor organizations on the ground, including the AFL-CIO, AFSCME and SEIU.

We're going to stick it to the MAN!!! Oh, wait, WE are the MAN. Such is the logic of public employee unions. Remind me to never, ever buy any music from this slug.

Judging by your comment I don't really think you'd be into any of his catalog of work.

You don't deserve to listen to Tom's music. Stick to Beiber - its more on your level.

That should stir up the dem base and make it much more of a civil atmosphere up there. I here the teachers are really into that music. Obviously the students are in Wisconsin, only 36% of the 8th graders rank above average in reading comprehension. No wonder half the public school teachers in Wisconsin send their children to private schools. Can you give me a big Hypoccccrrrriiiiissssyyyyy!!!!!!

" No wonder half the public school teachers in Wisconsin send their children to private schools."

I doubt the veracity of your remark.

And the National average for 8th grade reading comprehension is 32%

Better look where your state ranks before misreading educational data - like Drudge

Tom and Rage are jokes! They spit on capitalism, yet they take the money it made for them. Fun to listen to, but if you think for a second they actually practice what they preach you are a blind fool.

I wholeheartedly agree. They should have waited for leftist revolution before they attempted to learn their instruments, sell records and feed themselves.

Actually, there's a couple of bands who have standards.... check out Fugazi's business practices, 5 dollar tickets for arena sized venues and making the decision not to sell merchandise at concerts.

As for the whole money issue, if they were hardcore and really believed in "helping their fellow man" or any other smarmy lefty hallmark card BS you want to desperately try and attach to him and his band... they'd sleep on floors, constantly tour, keep a bare minimum of profits for essentials (shelter, food, instrument maintenance), live modestly, and donate 75% of all their profits to the "working man" and his "cause".

It shouldn't be too much of a stretch, it's what they want everyone else to do, might as well lead by example Tom.

Playing a free concert to a bunch of pissed off teachers (which will probably be all over the news giving his band free exposure to millions of people) isn't exactly giving back to the community, but it's one smart-as$ business plan to generate interest in his new band that no one has ever heard of and boost record sales simultaneously. ;)

For a left leaning anti-capitalist, he's pretty damn good at making money, you got to give him that.

Hmmm, looks like he's practicing what he preaches to me. I doubt he got paid to go there and he's a member of the musician's union. Looks like you are the one that's a blind fool.

A highly publicized event being watched by millions of people and when it's about to reach an explosive climax Tom decides to show up?

I'm sure that in no way will affect any sort of digital download sales now will it. ;)

He's not getting paid to go there, but you bet your as$ he's leaving with money.

Ok Tom Morello we get that you like protesting and looking cool but come on there's gonna be a stop to it soon.

I could never understand why RATM pretends to hate Capitalism even while selling $20 cds, $30 T-shirts, $100 concert tickets, etc.

If they really wanted to be taken seriously (not just by patchouli smelling college kids with rich parents and people who gain a false sense of achievement/progressiveness by listening to them), they need to take a page from Fugazi & GG Allin.

Until then, I guess they can keep pretending. : /

Shouldn't rage be against the protesters? Isn't government the machine? Somehow I would have thought rage against the machine would not be supporting government unions.

"The rage is relentless. We need a movement with a quickness. You are the witness of change and to counteract...we've got to take the power back!"

Prescient words from 1992.

When I look at the ridiculous sense of entitlement exhibited by the public employee union members in Madison, I can only think of the troubles that France has, when an entire country seems to be unionized and has grown way too comfortable on the tax money of an entire nation.

Regarding the Nightwatchman (cool name, btw), this type of posturing is nothing new in musician's' circles. The joke in the post woodstock era, however, is that these musicians, for the most part, are complete corporate players in their day to day lives, and this type of pseudo support for "the cause" typically translates into increased itunes downloads and concert ticket sales.

Morello's union has nothing in common with a public employees' union. They collectively bargain with corporate record executives about how much of the record companies profit they will get (in essence). And, they are not forced to join the union. Public Employees, in the Wisconsin case, must pay union dues (taken out of their paychecks) whether they are members or not. And the negotiations are not about a share of the profits, they are about how much more in taxes all the citizens of Wisconsin must pay, without the citizens of Wisconsin having a direct say in the matter. Plus the union bosses hold the union campaign finance money and voter influence over the heads of the negotiating politicians as a hammer during the negotiations. This is not a "good faith" process.

Do you think the salaries and bonuses of Wall Street bankers is a sence of entitelment or do you think they earned it?
Working class people work far harder for their EARNED income that those criminal Wall Street inside traders. The working class negotiate contracts through unions and EARN thier thier money all in good faith.
Wall Street insiders and Republican politicians never act in good faith

so why not picket Wall Street? That is where the people of Wisconsin should be, not in the streets like thugs/

I like how people try to demonize the common blue collar worker. These people do the needed work that many of us in the white collar world rather not due since we all know that these public jobs DO NOT pay at that same level. I live right next to Camden, NJ and I ask people that were against the Unions if they would do the work of Police officers in that city, oddly enough I have yet to hear of any takers, I wonder why.

The American people need to get their head out the sand a realize that the top 1% are re-distributing the wealth into their pockets and keeping all of our wages low. We also need to realize that we pay very little taxes but expect the world of services for them.

Exactly! People have come to expect a "world of services" and that is the problem. People need to go back to work and quit expecting others to give them a handout.

The people protesting are not the "common blue collar worker" in the least. They're public employees, who make more than the average Wisconsin private worker anyway.

I love Michelle Obama. Give the woman a break. She looked so damn beautiful and elegant in that dress, she had every RIGHT and DUTY to wear it. It's like telling us we need to drive American cars ... American car manufacturers haven't met my needs for reliability and gas mileage for 30+ years. Mrs. Obama has worn plenty of American designers and shined many a spotlight on them. For God's sake, let her alone and let her wear the most elegant dress she can find.

Only 5 states do not have collective bargaining for educators. Those states' ranking on ACT/SAT scores: South Carolina 50th, North Carolina 49th, Georgia 48th, Texas 47th, Virginia 44th.

Wisconsin is 2nd.

I grew up in WI. People are actually smart there.
