Somali Pirates Hijack 4 Americans; U.S. Assessing Responses

Somali Pirates

JASON STRAZIUSO and ABDI GULED   02/19/11 02:42 PM ET   AP

MOGADISHU, Somalia — An American couple that has sailed the world with a yacht full of Bibles was hijacked by Somali pirates, and the U.S. said Saturday it is assessing possible options.

Pirates say the yacht will make landfall in Somalia on Sunday, which would reduce the chances of a fast rescue dramatically. A British sailing couple hijacked by pirates was held hostage in a stiflingly hot Somali region for more than a year.

Pirates hijacked the yacht Quest on Friday, two days after a Somali pirate was sentenced to 33 years in prison by a New York court for the 2009 hijacking of the Maersk Alabama. That case ended in a spectacular rescue when Navy sharpshooters killed two pirates holding the ship's captain, Richard Phillips.

The Quest is the home of Jean and Scott Adam, a couple from California who has been sailing around the world since December 2004, according to a website the Adams keep. Two other Americans were also believed to be on board.

The pirates are unlikely to hurt the four Americans because they won't win any ransom money if they do, said Graeme Gibbon-Brooks, the head of Dryad Maritime Intelligence. He argued that the pirates would be wise to abandon the yacht because the hijacking threatens their business model, which relies on ransoms from large shipping and insurance companies.

"They risk the collapse of their business model if they change their status quo and the American government deems that they pose an immediate threat to the safety of American citizens," he said. "They've made a mistake and it's in the Somalis' business interest to get off the yacht as soon as possible."

The U.S. military was monitoring the situation. Matt Goshko, a spokesman at the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, which oversees Somalia, said reports indicate there are four U.S. citizens aboard the Quest.

"All relevant U.S. agencies are monitoring the situation, working to develop further information, assess options and possible responses," Goshko said.

Pirates have increased attacks off the coast of East Africa in recent years despite an international flotilla of warships dedicated to protecting vessels and stopping the pirate assaults. Multimillion dollar ransoms are fueling the trade, and the prices for releasing a ship and hostages have risen sharply.

Pirates currently hold 30 ships and more than 660 hostages, not counting the attack against the Quest.

After the Maersk Alabama was hijacked in April 2009, Navy sharpshooters fired on pirates holding Phillips, killing two of them. The only pirate to survive was Abdiwali Abdiqadir Muse, who was sentenced to 33 years in prison this week.

The best-known case of Westerners being held hostage in Somalia was that of Paul and Rachel Chandler, a British couple held for 388 days. The two, who were captured while sailing in their private yacht, were released in November.

A Somali pirate who gave his name as Bile Hussein said Saturday pirates from the Bari area of Somalia's northern region of Puntland captured the yacht. Hussein said the yacht was expected to arrive in Somalia on Sunday "if no problems happen on their way."

The Adams website chronicles the couple's travels over the last seven years, from El Salvador and Panama in 2005 to Fiji in 2007 and Singapore and Cambodia last year. They most recently sailed from Thailand to Sri Lanka and India and were on their way to Oman when captured. Djibouti – the tiny East African country north of Somalia – had been next on their list. A satellite tracking system the couple uses showed them docked in Mumbai, India on Feb. 1.

"Djibouti is a big refueling stop. I have NO idea what will happen in these ports, but perhaps we'll do some local touring," the couple's website says.

The Adams – who are members of the Marina del Rey Yacht Club in Marina del Rey, California – run a Bible ministry, according to their website, and have been distributing Bibles to schools and churches in remote villages in areas including the Fiji Islands, Alaska, New Zealand, Central America and French Polynesia.

The Adams carry both Catholic and Protestant versions of the Bible, and at several different reading levels. The couple stamps the bibles with "A GIFT from your friends in the United States. Quest Bible Ministry. NOT FOR SALE," after discovering a teacher who they gave Bibles to sold them.

The pirates from Puntland are not hardline Islamists and the fact the Adams carry Bibles is not likely to be a problem. Pirates in Puntland are known to spend their ransom spoils on alcohol, drugs and prostitutes.

But the prison sentence given to Muse this week could have implications for the four American hostages. Pirates have turned increasingly violent in their attacks, and naval officials say pirates have begun systematically torturing hostages and using them as human shields.

Earlier this week a pirate told an Associated Press reporter in Somalia that pirates would target Americans in retaliation for the sentencing. The pirate, who identified himself by the name Hassan, said Americans would suffer "regrettable consequences."

Pirates have recently tied hostages upside down and dragged them in the sea, locked them in freezers, beaten them and used plastic ties around their genitals, the commander of the European Union anti-piracy force, Maj. Gen. Buster Howes told AP this month.

The security minister in Puntland condemned the hijacking and called for an urgent rescue operations and for the pirates to be dealt with "relentlessly and mercilessly."

"We are not capable of stopping piracy. They have expertise and can reach far beyond Somali coastlines. Puntland will do its bests to track them down," Gen. Yusuf Ahmed Khary said.

I'm reading a lot of religious intolerance on this page and I can't help but think that if the couple were reported to be carrying vaccines and medicines to a third world country the response here would be very different. You may not believe what these people believe but they don't deserve to be held hostage and potentially executed for proselytizing. I say send in the SEALs and call it target practice. It worked last time and these pirate thugs need to be taught to stay away from American ships - or the next time the couple being threatened might be someone you actually agree with.

Well said.

Certain people will always look for a reason to blame misfortune on the victim, so they can continue to take false assurance in the belief that bad things only happen to bad people.

IN this case, the boat owners would have probably been blamed anyway for sheer stupidity for being in that area. Certain variables will increase the hostility; for example, if there is a bible or an 'attractive blonde female' on the boat, then clearly, they had it coming and deserve unrelenting derision.

I think that if ONE US Serviceman dies during a rescue the Adams hostages, they should be charged with 'accessory to manslaughter' as THEY HAD NO BUSINESS TRYING TO CONVERT THESE CRIMINALS TO CHRISTIANITY in pirate infested waters!!

This is unbelievable!! They had the protection of a flotilla of 100 other ships and they decided leave the group to sail near Somalia on their own instead on Feb 15th.

This is the height of irresponsibility! What kind of husband exposes his wife to such danger? BTW: There are currently 660 foreign hostages in the hands of Somali pirates today. Does that tell you anything?

You're attitude is appalling. If these people were peace corps or red cross volunteers, I'm sure your feelings would be very different. Yes, they were stupid to be sailing off the coast of Somalia and it is was the height of the irresponsibility to go off on their own, but your whole 'charge them with manslaughter' because you don't agree with the justifications that initially took them to that part of the world is ridiculous.

To be fair, I don't think the comments would be much different if they were Peace Corps (a little, but not much). I say this because of all the abuse and attacks leveled at the 3 Americans who were captured on the Iraq/Iran border a year or so ago. They were not missionaries and still darn near every pundit blamed it on them for hiking in a dangerous area. Same goes for those two American reporters caught in North Korea.

I think it's hyper-personal responsibility gone crazy. Everybody makes mistakes or does something foolish/risky, but only rarely do we pay for it this much. Personal responsiblity goes both ways, meaning the "bad guys" are responsible, which it seem some on this thread are forgetting.

They work for G-d, so G-d should get them out. Tax dollars should not be wasted on bible-thumpers. I don't hear of Jews going around and passiing out the Torah or Muslims passing out the Koran. They were told not to do it and they did it anyway. NO TAX DOLLARS should be spent on this situation in any form. Let their church be financially responsible or, maybe, just sell the yacht!

Well, from a Christian perspective: Worse case scenario, they get to go to heaven and meet Jesus. So they can't be too upset.

However, I hope they are released soon and make it home safely.

A few pieces of information:
Groups of private vessels do traverse this area. Usually, they try to stay in convoy groups while in the risky area, even though private vessels are very rarely attacked (almost all attacks have been against cargo ships and fishing vessels).

There are military ships in the affected area which are tasked with protecting and escorting vessels through the area, although escort has been mostly granted only to commercial vessels. Private vessels are usually denied escort, primarily because they have been considered not to be at risk.

The situation in the area has changed a great deal in the last three months. Previously, attacks were occurring mostly in the Gulf of Aden and within a couple hundred miles of the Somali coast. However, with increasing military presence in that area and with sea traffic staying away from Somalia, the pirates have expanded, often attacking over 1000 miles away (even up to 1500 miles away).

This particular boat had been recently travelling with group called the Blue Water Round World Rally. However, they had left Mumbai on their own, travelling to Oman. The boat was taken on this leg a couple hundred miles from Oman (and about 800 miles from Somalia).

It is not known why they chose to go this route on their own. Four months ago it would not have been a very risky trip, but now there are several cases of attacks in that area (although none on private vessels). One convoy organizer described how the unexpected changing conditions has caused some travellers to panic and go off in different directions.

So this couple goes to a dangerous part of the world to annoy people with bibles? If the Navy rescues them will they be obliged to pay for the service of rescuing them? I do not want my tax dollars spent rescuing christian extremists from pirates, when the christian extremists put themselves in this situation.

I have no use whatsoever for bible thumping fools, however they should be able to sail the oceans without being kidnapped by black thugs.

I agree. Brown thugs, yellow thugs, white thugs - no problem. But black thugs? Now THAT'S a problem.

When you're warned in major cities not to go in certain neighborhoods, you pay attention. Crimes happen here in America and color of a persons skin should never be a factor. All races have criminals. These people were warned. Their cavalier attitude came with a price. Sell the yacht and pay their own ransom!

Not sure how the negotiations will proceed with the U.S assessing a response... A monetary ransom by the U.S is out of the question... interested to see how they get home.

So much for the armed-force deterrent theory. Shooting the two hijackers and sentencing the survivor to 30 years hasn't exactly worked wonders ...

Perhaps, more moderate methods might find their way into practice, methods that enable the local populations to do a bit more than just survive ...

Guess the pirates decided not to attack the two Iranian warships that passed through the Suez Canal.

Just because it is convenient for the rest of the world to travel this passage doesn't make it right. I saw an article about how the locals are able to fish and make a living for themselves again because of the so called 'pirates'. They keep the large fish ships from overfishing and they ppl are able to feed themselves. More countries should take their welfare into their own hands, instead of letting the world's super powers dictate how they will and should live. I can only image all the pollution and crap that are dumped into their waters. A duty should be paid by all of those that use that water way and the Somalis are making sure that they will collect theirs. Other wise ppl can always travel around Africa instead.

First, learn something about the area. Somalia does not own the Red Sea or the Suez Canal. They are one country in the general area, a country that has NO claim on that shipping lane.

Aside from that, these pirates are NOT "protecting" the fishing waters of other countries. They are steaIing and ransoming ships and people. They are doing anywhere they can with no respect for the sovereignty of their neighboring countries. They are doing it to the detrimiment of their neighbors.

Saying that anyone should pay a "duty" to pirates who aren't even operating in their home waters is just ridicuIous.

Here is the brief history.
At one time, the lack of a functioning government to protect Somali waters allowed many fishing boats from other countries (primarily from neighboring countries) to come in. This depleted the fish causing strain on Somali fishermen, many of whom turned to piracy. At the same time there were some shipping companies that apparently contracted with what little Somali government there was to use the waters as a dumping ground (paying to do so). This further pressured the the people of Somalia.

This was the situation for some time. However, they did not stop with attacking fishing boats. They moved on to ships travelling through the area LEGALLY. This includes travelling LEGALLY in the waters of OTHER countries. Any cliam the pirates had to a noble cause disappeared long ago.

It is not just "convenient". It is what the countries that really do control the canal want. Ships travelling through that area do pay duties to those countries.

sry bud, but ur the only one saying anything about the red sea/suez canal... if they plan on travelling in waters that pass infront, along, in the area of Somalia then they can expect to pay the price.
please stop interjecting ur lack of comprehension in what i'm saying. No one said anything about protecting fishing waters, but a result of the somalis actions is improving fishing for locals. I kno its hard for u to understand how anyone can think that america is not perfect, but sry son american is far from it. Every rule and 'law' created is not just for all parties and when that happens you can ask for the persons benefiting to change it or you can take matters into your own hands.
'Legally' to whom.... it sure isn't the somali ppl.. so that is relative depending who it affects... sry.. smh keep trying though. somalias have not rights to the waters that cross their land, yet others actually 'control' the canal (do u even see ur hypocrisy, i guess not..smh)
I know ur still confused, puzzled, slow.. etc.. but hey that's ur problem not mine.. Have a good one. :o}

I love being adventurous, but smart too. What interests me about this article is that God expects us to have respects for our life and not take chances. Is not yachting in pirate infested waters taking chances with your life?
