The elevated garden/walkway on the High Line in the meatpacking district is readying itself for its second phase of existence.
Section 2, which will open in the spring, will extend the elevated park all the way up to 30th street, which will be the northernmost point of the park.
Recently a huge section of the Line was removed to create what Friends of the High Line call a "floating platform."
The 15-by-35-foot platform will be covered in transparent, stainless steel gratings and framed with laminated glass guardrails. Subsurface lighting below the platform, which hovers just a few feet above the High Line's structural steel grid, creates a unique viewing experience of the exposed High Line structural beams and girders, as well as a view through to the street below. Adjacent plantings will include Sassafras, Birch, and Juniper trees along the concrete path which will provide a dramatic contrast to the transparent, open viewing platform.
