Borders Closings: List Of Independent Alternatives

Borders Closings

edrants.com:

The list of 200 Borders bookstores was obtained from court records. I located the alternative bookstores using a variety of online sources (Indiebound, Yelp, Citysearch) and attempted to include independent bookstores that were favorably reviewed by customers. Mileage was calculated by ZIP Code. As of February 18, 2011, I have confirmed that all of the following bookstores all remain open for business. I have also eliminated the two Puerto Rico bookstores that are closing. Like the Hawaii situation, if a Borders store closes on an island, chances are that you'll have to go for a swim to find an alternative. I encourage the readers to leave comments if there are independent bookstores that I have overloooked or if the information is inaccurate. I will happily amend the list to account for any late-stage crowdsourcing.

Books, Inc. is not an independent bookstore - they are a chain. And many of the other stores listed sell used books only.

If Borders didn't work in those locations, why does anyone think another name on the door will be any different?

I know few of my right wing friends actually read books although they might buy and carry around a book by one of their heroes. I believe the problem is that those in charge sometimes don't promote reading as a pleasurable experience.

Anyone remember when Bush was proudly reading "In the Heart of the Sea?" If a 7th grader was reading that I'd be impressed, the leader of our country? Not so much.

The Independents listed for Dallas suck, selection-wise. Oh well, it's not such a tragedy to switch from 85% online shopping to 100%.

Thats a lot of jobs and vacant real estate that will need to be leased this does not just hurt Borders but it hurts all employees who will loose a job and all the building owners who will loose there tenant, and or the investors. There is always a trickle down effect that is important to look at so things can be addressed ahead of time hopefully having less effects on local economies.

the sad thing is that aurora colorado has few booksellers. note all the booksellers listed send you into denver or nearby suburbs. with Aurora public libraries closing too, it doesn't look good for reading here.

The list of independent alternatives in Los Angeles could use some additions:
Skylight Books (Los Feliz)
Book Soup (West Hollywood)
Metropolis Books (DTLA)
Vromans (technically Pasadena, not LA, but worth checking out if convenient)
Small World Books (just about the only non - trashy store on the Venice Boardwalk)
