Malikah Shabazz, Malcolm X's Daughter, Arrested

Shabazz

MARS HILL, N.C. — The daughter of Malcolm X was being held in a North Carolina jail and could be extradited to New York to face charges on several outstanding warrants, authorities said Monday.

Malikah Shabazz was arrested Friday night after authorities responded to a call to a Mars Hill home, said Chief Deputy Michael Garrison of the Madison County Sheriff's Office. Investigators found that the 45-year-old had several outstanding warrants from Queens, N.Y., that include charges for grand larceny, forgery and identity theft.

Garrison and her lawyer, Sean Devereux, said Shabazz is the daughter of slain civil rights leader Malcolm X, who is also known as El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz. She was born months after Malcolm X was assassinated exactly 46 years ago Monday.

Shabazz is scheduled to appear for an extradition hearing Tuesday.

Devereux said the warrants appear to be from 2009 but that she was never served with the papers. Her attorneys are not sure about the circumstances of the charges. He said prosecutors in New York have known her most recent address in South Carolina, where she owned a home and had a driver's license.

"The notion that she fled New York is really not the case," Devereux said.

Devereux said Shabazz is not fighting extradition and is eager to go to New York and deal with the matter. She's mostly concerned about her 13-year-old daughter, who was in the custody of the local Department of Social Services, Devereux said.

Shabazz is being held at a jail in neighboring Haywood County because Madison County does not have facilities to hold women.

Devereux said she recently moved to the mountains of North Carolina to find a peaceful place to live. Authorities came to the house Friday night as social workers investigated a call that a child was not attending school, he said, noting that Shabazz's daughter is home-schooled.

Shabazz is not facing charges in North Carolina, Garrison said.

This woman whether mentally challenged or not, apparently, she had brains enough to steal a credit card(s) and negotiate her way through the stores, purchase luxuries and other goods, and may have done this with other thefts. Any thief that goes to trial will hear a loy-ya try to convince a jury their "poor deprived client has been denied their rights as citizens and "please don't send this good person to prison". But, if anything is going to change, it has to be within. Politicians from either party cannot solve the problem until the hidden problems are brought into light. Males who never know a father. Females who use the system to add more children to get a larger payoff welfare check. Kids who don't feel the need to graduate and wind up on streets in gangs who become their only family. The crime that comes out of these areas is about the inner core which is anger, discontent, isolation, and those that make it out sometimes tune it out and try to forget. Ministers and politicians cannot entirely eliminate the negatives. It has to come from an inner core of values that only comes from responsibility by parents, family, The state cannot mandate either.

I never really understood why Malcolm X is held in such high regard. He essentially was the ANTI Martin Luther King. WHen Doctor King was fighting for equality, X was preaching separatism. His banter has more about anger than understanding.

I believe most of the advancements of the black community are owed to the philosophy of MLK and most of the reasons the black community has remained suppressed is due to the philosophy of Malcolm X.

i'm by no means an expert on Malcolm X, but from what I do know I would disagree with calling him the opposite of MLK. I see them more as two halves of one complex whole. In MLK you have the optimism of a man of faith, who believes in the power of salvation. Malcolm was not as spiritually driven, but he did find his way out of a dead end existence by embracing Islam, so he too believed that there is such a thing as redemption.
One thing Malcolm clearly did was articulate the rage that so many black men carried around in those days, when there were still segregated drinking fountains and lunch counters and motels. It was an especially degrading time to be black in America, and I think he spoke to that anger. I would guess it was in some way comforting to see him poking the establishment with a sharp stick on shows like MTP.
Ultimately though, his ideas for separatism were naive and unrealistic, whereas King saw where the true arc of history was headed. I think that's what makes King's legacy so relevant today, and why Malcolm has become more of an historical artifact.

Malcolm X expressed the natural and well-educated rage of Black Americans. By the way, Malcolm X is respected around the world, even through white America wants you to focus on Martin Luther King.

Martin Luther King's genius was the use of the non-violent approach, which put white Americans on the horns of dilemna. Looking good versus being the ugliness you've always been. He made the conflict internal the white America and appealled to conscience, which is difficult if you begin by violence. White America has never recovered from that great moment of conscience inflection and you see that in Liberals (with conscience) vs. Conservatives (without conscience) today.

I can only agree, partially. Malcolm X and MLK are really two peas in a pod as they were both pretty much religious fanatics and, in my opinion, that waters down any message that either of them were trying to convey... to a point. Yes, Malcolm X was preaching separatism but he also preached self-sufficiency and working with dealing with the developed psyche among African-Americans after 400+ years of slavery and segregation... which, when you break down what each of those entailed including forced !ncest and complete breakdown of family structure, you can still see the after-effects, even today. X was more honest about those lingering effects and how he thought they should be dealt with while MLK pretty much threw it on the backburner and went straight for change.

If one was to take the religion and the calls of separatism out of the equation, the combined messages of X and MLK probably would have been a lot more helpful.

How "forced !ncest" comes into play here, I have no idea...

Nothing to do with the "developed psyche among African-Americans"

This is what happens when you don't have a Black community. Too many people out for their own self-interests.

It started with our "leaders". Pretty much all except the ones who were killed got greedy and chased after the money. And we're in a white power structure, so it was easy for some seemingly nice white folks to step in and say, "Okay, THIS is how you get the money." But in THEIR economy, not creating an economy of our own. That's what you see today: A nation of consumers, rather than a nation of business-owners (i.e. Jews, Arabs, Indians, Hispanics/Latinos, Asians, whites).

Even today we still don't get it. Too busy chasing rims, tattoos, sex, gangs, drugs, and all types of debauchery. Even the ones who aren't into all that still don't get it. It's easier for a Black man with nothing to get an education, get a temporary job, and start a business than it is for him to become a famous athlete or musician. Even so, the bulk of us spend our time chasing the latter instead of the former. The outside races (especially whites) do their part to keep us going in this direction as much as possible, but even with that considered, this is mainly OUR fault and no one else's.

If we don't make changes SOON, we won't continue to exist as a race, let alone be able to assist the families of slain civil rights leaders. {{-_-}}

Johnny Ace, WOW. Your post was one of the most powerful post that i have ever read on HuffPo. Not only is it deep, but it is so telling my story; well partially anyways. You see, banks do not lend to minority community in business. that's just an old myth. (smile)

As chairman of a mid-sized company I had to go beyond USA borders in order to get err done. Thanks again and so faved and fanned.

Not to put all black people in the same boat, but it appears the man is saying the black community as a whole needs to change it's values. Perhaps its those values and the stigma that comes with it (unfairly or not) that creates an environment where banks don't want to lend. WIth that said, these days banks aren't really lending to anyone...so don't take it personal. Congrats on your efforts though to reach your goal and getting your business going...so tell me, are you hiring?

F&F. It's not often that I hear someone willing and honest enough to state the facts. You are absolsutely right. And you probably stand out among the people you know because they haven't matured enough to the point that they need to start acting like adults. Black community? To me that only means living among other blacks because there is no cohesion when there is selfishness. I don't know where you are going, but I know you will get there. :)
