The Other Spider-Man Musical: 'The Spidey Project' At Peoples Improv Theater (VIDEO)
Watch out "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark," there's a new Spidey show in town.
Justin Moran, an improv comedian and composer, has created his own musical based on the wall-scaling superhero. After reading about the problems that have plagued the production and the flood of negative reviews (although Glenn Beck claims it's the best show he's ever seen), Moran thought he could do better.
"The Spidey Project: With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility" will open at the Peoples Improv Theater on March 14, a day earlier than the official opening of Julie Taymor's $65 million Broadway extravaganza. Moran's musical is based off of a book co-authored by him and Jon Roufaeal and is closely based off of the original Spider-Man comic book series.
To "preview" his production, Moran posted a series of "Spiderman Smackdown" videos on YouTube. The videos sparked interest from prospective cast and crew members and rehearsals begin Wednesday, February 23.
Moran told the New York Times, "our goal isn't to tear down Julie Taymor or parody her production. Our goal is to do what she should have done in the first place, and that's just make a really good musical."
In the video below, Moran questions, "Just how important is $65 million in making good theater?" In comparison, his budget: zero dollars.
