World's Least Liveable Cities: 2011 Economist Intelligence Unit Report (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 02/22/11 01:54 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:35 PM ET

Harare residents may have the most challenging lifestyles on the planet, as the Zimbabwean capital ranked dead last among the new survey of the world's most liveable cities.

As Reuters is reporting, Harare scored a paltry 37.5 percent in the 2011 Liveability Ranking and Overview by the Economist Intelligence Unit. This is the second time the city has claimed the bottom spot out of a total 140 global cities, just below the Bangladesh capital of Dhaka.

Among the factors in Harare the report specifically targeted: the city's prevalence of petty crime, its threat of civil unrest or conflict, and its quality of public transport. In addition, Harare is home to almost 3 million people, many who live in extreme poverty.

The Economist Intelligence Unit annually ranks cities based on a total of 30 factors including access to healthcare, culture and environment, along with education and personal safety in its survey. Take a look at an earlier report on the world's most liveable cities here.

Having spent a couple of nights in Port Moresby, I can attest to its problems. The biggest problem is certainly a nationwide one, corruption. Government corruption is rampant. There is the problem as well of the Raskols, the gangs that roam Port Moresby at night and make going out after dark foolhearty. The hotel I stayed at was a compound, complete with high fence and 24/7 security roaming the grounds.

I have to add that the tour my wife and I took outside of Port Moresby goes down as one of the two most amazing trip I've ever taken.

Could have just picked any 10 cities (if there are 10) in Mississippi

Having Algiers on here is absolutely insulting. In no measurable way could it even be compared to hellholes in Sub-Saharan Africa or South Asia. It wouldn't even make the top 500 list of "least liveable cities" if this was remotely fair.

Also laughable is that the same list has Auckland, New Zealand at #10. I have been to both Auckland and Algiers, and I can genuinely say that Auckland is barely any more "liveable" than Algiers. New Zealand on a whole is a country with limited opportunities and a population that can't wait to leave. It's also POOR by "developed" standards. Of course, Algerians all want to leave for Europe too, but nobody is pretending their country is perfect. For a country that suffered a decade long civil war so recently, Algiers is an attractive and extremely "liveable" city.

I'll bet taxes are low and they don't suffer from evil socialist projects like water & sewer treatment, public transportation, food programs, etc. Truly, they are libertarian Utopias.

Weird list. I'd prefer every single city on it to Dzerzinsk, Russia, with its 42-year life expectancy, or Linfen, China, where you literally choke on coal dust, or Pyongyang with its secret police.

Colombo 10th worst place to live on Earth? Colombo is rather nice, and not just for rich tourists. Maybe the people who drew up the list don't like chaotic traffic or something. Pyongyang and Dzerzinsk must be just right for them, then.

Gaza City (Stuck in the middle of the world's largest prison camp) and Port Au Prince (absolutely destroyed by an earthquake, currently fighting a cholera epidemic) and Monterrey (in the middle of Mexico's current drug war) fail to make the list but Tehran (a really lovely city) does?

And before you quote me the smog statistics (which are horrifying) I would point out that Mexico City failed to make the list, so I don't think it was a real consideration.

I would rte Cameroon, Nigeria Number Uno on the list - it is crime-ridden, the government is corrupt as is the case in so many African states.
Cameroon is the source of rampant internet scams of all kinds : just to name two, many that target animal lovers by offering pets on websites like Locanto, or emails looking for assistance for non-existent fund transfers.

The Texas Panhandle should definitely be on the list - crystal meth country!
