Mike Huckabee Expresses Deep Doubts About Afghan End Game, Karzai's Corruption

Mike Huckabee Afghanistan

WASHINGTON -- Former Gov. Mike Huckabee (R-Ark.) became one of the most high-profile Republicans to express skepticism with the war in Afghanistan, telling reporters on Wednesday that he sees no "end game" in sight, has no confidence in President Hamid Karzai, thinks the country looks "like the surface of the moon" and believes the time has come for an honest, non-political conversation about the next steps.

"I don't know [what to do next]," Huckabee said at an afternoon talk organized by the Christian Science Monitor. "I don't think any of us know exactly. We are there. The question is, I'm asking people, 'Tell me, what is it we do to say we are done? Help me to understand that because I'm not sure.'"

"My doubts about Afghanistan happen from being there in January 2006," he said earlier. "And when I say my doubts I believe our military is capable of doing whatever they are assigned to do given the resources to do it. But I came away from that experience wondering: What does the end game look like here? I can't see a conclusion."

In making the remarks, the Arkansas Republican provided the first definitive hint that the Afghanistan war could become a point of fissure, both within the Republican presidential primary and possibly the general election. The one other White House aspirant on the GOP side of the aisle who has expressed similar reservations -- Rep. Ron Paul (R-Tex.) -- has a devoted following but is still (perhaps unfairly) treated as a long-shot libertarian.

On Wednesday, however, Huckabee was echoing the very same lines of concern that followers of Paul have come to know well.

"You go to Afghanistan, you look around and you say, 'My gosh, am I in a country or on the surface of the moon?" he said. "You honestly could not see what it is that can happen here. You can't grow anything but poppies. The cash crop is essentially developing the basis of heroin for Europe... and the government is so incredibly and hopeless corrupt. And I don't see that changing any. I don't know of anyone who says 'what a great bunch of people we have over there, running the thing.' I mean we all, even our own administration, whether it is Bush or Obama, kind of throws up their hands and thinks that the Karzai government is mindlessly corrupt."

Beyond the pool of potential presidential aspirants, skepticism over Afghanistan inside the GOP is certainly growing. Former Reagan Administration Assistant Secretary of Defense Bing West released a new book this week, titled "The Wrong War" in which he builds the case that nation building in that country is a fruitless enterprise.

What's telling about Huckabee's remarks is the sense they portray that, within the Republican Party, there is some political gain to striking an anti-war stance. Paul, certainly, is adored by the Tea Party faithful for preaching more of an isolationist approach to foreign affairs. And at the Conservative Political Action Conference gathering this year in D.C. it seemed clear that skepticism of the war had grown more tolerated if not popular.

There are, of course, larger geopolitical elements to consider with the commentary. And should Huckabee actually find himself even on the brink of winning the presidency he may have to be a touch more diplomatic about his talk of Karzai's corruption.

Isolationism isn't new to Republicans & Dum Dawgy fronts (W & Reagan)
in 2001 (After relentlessly Stopping the recount of the Popular Vote, declaring themselves
the winnings &appointing W) Republicans dropped the Clinton's Middle East Peace Process
***on the floor for 18 months*** Like Reagan did after Carter's (Middle of 5 years of Confidence Building Measures).

Since everything The Republican Cowards do is about Image versus substance they didn't want to get involved saying "These people had been in conflict since Biblical days why take a chance on something "we" could look bad at."

Republicans thrive on Ignorance, &Perpetuate it over Majority of our information pipelines-- From moment by moment lies -- to Trashing the teachers of our Children for decades,
Reinventing history, W,(&Reagan who confused Movie plots w/history),to Texas Text Books.

Reagan closed libraries saying "look how far I got and I never went to the Library once"
W while President publicly kissed &hugged the student w/lowest grade at Yale Graduation.

Problem isif you don't know history you can't avoid repeating it...Tea Party (organized by same people who went after Clinton) paid for by the Health Insurance companies & Gas & Oil --
ManyTea-Reps Party voters -- are Like Turkeys at their own Thanksgiving Since their House finance leader plans onPrivatizing Social Security &replacing Medicare w/LoweThanHealthCareCostsVouchers so seniors will haggle with their doctors for pricing.

Some Anti War Republicans are Microtarget Democratic voters into voting for them.

The 8 years of Benign Neglect of Afgahinstan by Huckabee's Party
After **The Moronic Catastrophic*** abandonment, in 1989 -- by Bush the Elder, after Reagan built up those who became the Taliban and Al Qeda -- alongside the Pakistani intelligence forces-- as Proxy Warriors against the USSR (killled 1 Million & created 6 Million refugees into Pakistan) contributed to corruption as a means of survival. Not to mention corruption by Republicans Contractors (Karazi's Taliban Comment).

While there's constant repetition that Karazi himself is corrupt by many who'd (rightfully) rather spend the money domestically, but would be nice to get proof since repetition does not turn opinion into fact.

Huckabee proved he'll say anything -- like the rest of his Party of Lunatics, Liars & US Treasury Looters -- So he's got as much credibility as W, Romney, Reagan, Gangrich and the rest of the Republican Party of Terrorizers.

There's been good progress In Afghanistan since Obama took over its execution from the incompetent Republicans liars (who also wrackedUp $12 Trillion of $14Trillion we are in debt)!

Despite the fact that our President doesn't needs one more projects to Clean up after the Republicans!!

There's also no evidence that were the money taken out of Afghanistan that it would be invested in the US --- versus more tax cuts for those who use it to drive up commodity prices (which is more likely!)

Many world conflicts=result of Proxy Wars between US &USSR. Some we have no choice but to clean up!

Amazing! Remember these are the ThugoCrat war mongers who support the ongoing torture at Gitmo, the illegal war most of the Thugocrat criminals voted for in Iraq, and the much loved_murder of the innocent in Afghanistan.

There are only two types who remain Democrats - Union thugs and young_ignorant_fools.

Remember most of the wars in the last 100 years were started by Thugocrat warmonger_Democrats.

Not this one Pull My Finger - I mean Purple Finger. Easy to say Democrats have started wars over the last 100 years as the term Democrat has taken on a lot of different meanings throughout American history. And as a young ignorant fool it fascinates me how you can point out 3 events that were initiated by Republicans and rebrand them as Democratic bc Obama is in office. Union thugs?!? HA doesn't even deserve reply.

Maybe if Baby boomer got their rising drug abuse under control we could have a civil conversation about things. Appendages might start returning to normal shades.

Union thugs? You mean people sticking together to protect their interests. As for young-ignorant-fools, the only ignorant-fools are the Tea Party and its love affair with corrupt politicians like Rick Scott and Marco Rubio.

The partisan attacks on Huckabee here are clealy evading the point - for whatever reasons, Mr. Huckabee adequately describes our dilemma - we are fighting a lost war, wasting resources in a foreign country that cannot return on our investment either economically or politically, in an attempt to intimidate other countries in the region militarily rather than developing a successful long-term diplomatic strategy. We are basically mired in our own blind effort to maintain a 20th century global politics that went outdated a decade ago.

I do not agree with Huckabee on virtually everything but I must admit that he might be right there. We are mired in there with no clear exit strategy.

Let's try again. Huckabee has said nothing of consequence about these wars in over ten years. Now that it is finally becoming obvious to the American people that all the lives lost, the thousands of wounded American kids and the trillions we have blown trying to impose "democracy" where mostly illiterate people cannot even spell it, has failed and ruined a big part of economy while doing so. The leaders we need to save this nation from a complete oligarchy will need vision not passive reaction to the most important issues years later.

As a 2008 Huckabee supporter, I can assure you he has always been skeptical of our wars in the Middle East not the least reason being their cost relative to the benefit we see from them. He does, however, suport our troops and homeland defense in a big way. This may confuse some into thinking he is hawk. He is certainly not a dove--more of an eagle.

He is well aware of the history of everyone from the Romans to the Russians in the area and that they don't call it "the graveyard of Empires" for nothing.

Im going to sway a little off topic just to agree with the fact that we can't win this war. I watched the Battle for Marjah on HBO and it showed US Marines working directly with the Afghan Army, well as we all know we are supposed to hand Afghanistan over to the Afghan Army in the very near future. Well based on the video (though I know it shows a small portion of the Afghan Army) the Afghan Army are terrible at what they do. We all know that US Marines are extremely capable of fighting and winning battles, therefore I would assume they could train others how to do so (though not to the full extent) partially as well. The Afghan Army look like 12 year olds out in the field and its incredibly sad. There is no way that if the rest of the AA look like these guys they will ever be able to control Afghanistan and the Taliban. The Taliban aren't your convential type of Army, if they were we would just take down their bases, their capital, etc. and call it a day. But, the fact of the matter is that they are similar to modern day criminals in the states. Our police force in the states can't eliminate every single criminal or gang because they reside in multiple locations under cover until they commit a crime very similar to the Taliban. The war is unwinnable!!

This may be off topic, but ...

Speaking of Huckabee's take on Afghanistan, I just watched Rumsfield on The View.  When he was asked about the Iraq war, and if he had any regrets about the misinformation on the WMD leading to the war, guess who he pinned the responsibility on?  Colin Powell!!!!

Bush ... Cheney ... Rumsfield ... Wolfowitz ... Perle ...will forever be remembered as the most despicable, shameful administration in our government's history.  In respect to Powell, they used him to set up their argument for war.  They knew that he was a man of unimpeachable integrity, so they gave him a book of lies to present to the American people, and once he did their bidding, wittingly or unwittingly, they turned their backs on him and left him to face the music!  But what they didn't expect was that, when Colin Powell realized that he'd been duped into misleading the American people, he would turn his back on them first ... never to look back!

Powell has spent the years since, apologizing for what he did, seeking redemption, and reclaiming our trust.

Bush, Cheney, Rumsfield, etc. have spent the years since, dodging responsibility, blaming everyone else, and now pointing the finger once again to General Powell, as if he was the mastermind behind it all!!!

What evil, evil men they are!
