Virgin Blue's New Flight Attendant Uniforms, As Modeled By Elle Macpherson (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 02/23/11 09:21 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:35 PM ET

Virgin Blue, Australia's Virgin airline, debuted chic new uniforms on Wednesday in downtown Sydney's Pitt Street Mall, according to news.com.au.

The getups, designed by "Project Runway"'s Juli Grbac, are meant to hark back to a time when flying was glamorous in the 1960s.

In order to get ideas for the new uniforms, Grbac asked flight attendants what they liked and disliked about their mandatory wardrobes, including complaints that the sleeves were too long and restrictive, the hemline was too blah and in general they were unflattering. Grbac told the website, "They just really wanted to look good for work."

The uniforms were modeled by 60 some flight attendants AND Elle Macpherson (who herself rocked a pair of hot pants last spring). Macpherson told the website that "Juli's brought a sort of glamour, elegance and fun back into uniforms.''

Of course, Virgin Blue's counterparts at Virgin Atlantic were recently crowned the hottest flight attendants in the skies. Maybe these new uniforms will give them a run for their money.

Australian supermodel Elle Macpherson takes part in a fashion display to launch airline Virgin Blue's new uniform in Sydney on February 23, 2011. Sixty of Virgin Blue's own pilots and crew, as well as Macpherson, paraded the striking new red and royal purple uniforms as the first step in a series of exciting changes for the airline in 2011.

ive never flown with virgin but contrary to their image and advertisements, their flight attendants are not that hot. nor are their uniforms.

emirates on certain routes has the hottest and most attractive uniforms ive seen, certainly better than this.

Basic black on Virgin America works nicely with their limo-bus-lighting.  :)

I'm a tiny bit confused.

These uniforms look, to me, to be straight from the Virgin Atlantic (I used to work for them) stable. And yet, they've been "designed" by someone from Project Runway and hark back the 60s.

Oh, and by the way, @JazzoRenee yes, Virgin Blue does employ female pilots. #imjustsaying

So are there any female pilots or male flight attendants?? #imjustsaying

My aching eyes! Can't imagine why they ever went with "red". That's such a hard color to look at. I suffer from migraines and it wouldn't take long after seeing that color coming at me, to set one off.

I'm confused... How are they "as modeled by Elle Macpherson" when she is wearing a completely different outfit?

and these seen a million times in the airport uniforms are supposed to be ground-breaking...or tarmac breaking, in what way?.

hopefully virgin's improvement on service is a more different take on the norm than their uniforms.

okay, but nothing special.
They could have done much better

Sexy? Now 1950's Eastern uniforms, those were sexy. Very Dior, complete with hats and the girls served you wearing heels.

So true. All my Aunts were international stews for a year or two before marriage in the late 50's, early 60's. The uniforms were divine.

Hate to tell y'all this, but the style is pure 1980s. (not the colors, but the style...I know as I was wearing them).
Prefer my flight crew stout enough to actually open an emergency exit.
Prefer those in the flight deck to have decades of experience. Don't care what they look like.

do you want fries with that?

No way, I don't want some old heavily lipsticked overly tanned wrinkled battle axe of a flight attendant jamming that drink cart into my elbows and legs and toes on a flight. If I am going to take that kind of punishment, it better be from a hot flight attendant. Plus, they all have to pass the same tests no matter how they look.

Well I am glad they are focused on safety and welfare of passengers. Coffee, tea or flammable polyester?
