Dog Rescued By Dolphins In Florida Canal (VIDEO)

First Posted: 02/24/11 09:14 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:35 PM ET

When 11-year-old doberman pincher Turbo escaped from his home last Sunday night, he made some unexpected new friends.

Owner Cindy Burnett said her pooch had been missing for more than 15 hours when neighbors heard a loud splashing in a nearby canal. Upon investigating the scene, they found Turbo stranded in shallow water, surrounded by--yes--dolphins.

A very grateful Burnett said her pet was "shivering and in a lot of distress...if he had to tread water all night long, I know he wouldn't have been able to."

What a heartwarming story! I couldn't even imagine a large dog like a Doberman was saved by a group of dolphins. This is the kind of stuff that people would not really expect reading, but still, it's quite interesting. I was inspired to make my own post about this news; please read it at http://www.seefido.com/cooldogblog/?p=239

The dog was probably just trying to get away from his owner's awful voice.

And we thank them by allowing them to be betrayed and slaughtered in Taiji, the Faroe Islands, and even their here in the States. The U.S. government still issues permits for Inuits to slaughter beluga whales, a close cousin to the dolphins which has also consistently saved human lives. Put a stop to these killings!

aren't there leash laws on marco island?

there are rarely dumb animals, only dumb people

if the dog was on a leash, this near death wouldn't have happened

i hope the dolphins send Turbo's owner a bill for rescue services

The article said he escaped.
08:39 AM on 02/28/2011
yes, 'escaped' or perhaps 'fido' was just let out as usual only this time he didn't come back

how can a dog 'escape' ? Does he know how to turn the handle on the door or does he open windows?

doesn't anyone but me watch "The Dog Whisperer?"

'escaped' dogs are usually dogs that owners let out without a leash, just so 'fido' can run around, because as we all know dogs NEVER bit strangers

funny, I never hear about cats attacking people and having the owners fined because of it
yes, i am a cat person

last cat i had saved my life as she woke me up when my house caught fire
now THAT'S a great cat

Hi bogey1; you must not own a dog, sometimes they get out. the story said it escaped. So don't lynch the owners.

Back in the day Turbo would have been rescued in less than 30 minutes. Flipper gets Bud's attention, Bud sets out to rescue Turbo but his boat runs out of gas and drifts out to sea. Flipper goes and finds Ranger Rick and Sandy and they rescue Bud and then find Turbo staying afloat by clinging to a piece of driftwood. Ranger Rick returns Turbo to his owner who happens to be a gorgeous widow with two girls the same age as Bud and Sandy.

I "met" a pod of dolphins snorkeling near Panama City Fla many years ago. They were very nice to me, they circled, a couple bumped me, they chattered amongst themselves (probably about how bad a swimmer I am) then vanished into the deep. Trust me, they are every bit as smart as we are.
05:03 AM on 02/27/2011
I doubt they are "every bit as smart as we are". You don't see Dolphins trying to kill each other.

Maybe the dolphins were keeping crocs away.
08:35 PM on 02/26/2011
From looking at the video, I don't see any evidence that the dolphins "saved" the dog--and if the noise they created did attract attention to the dog, there's no evidence that they did it on purpose.

This story just looks like poor reporting on a slow night, and a lot of wishful thinking. Here's a good website for finding out what animals are really up to: www.hitchhikinganimals.blogspot.com .

Really not raining on the parade here, but I have to agree with Dt20--the only indication the dolphins actually did anything was the neighbor woman's statement that she'd heard them making some noise. I was expecting some great video showing our fine finned friends throwing the Dobie a life preserver. Though we do need some heartwarming news, god knows....
