Apple has officially unveiled its new line of MacBook Pro computers.

Apple claims the new machines, which include FaceTime HD cameras with "triple the resolution of the previous generation," Intel Sandy Bridge Core i5 and i7 processors, and Thunderbolt I/O technology, are "up to twice as fast" as their predecessors.

The new line of MacBook Pros will be available in three sizes: 13-inch ($1,199 and up), 15-inch model ($1,799 and up), and 17-inch ($2,499).

Apple offers more details on the specs:

The 13-inch MacBook Pro is available in two configurations: one with a 2.3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5 and 320GB hard drive starting at $1,199; and one with a 2.7 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5 and 500GB hard drive starting at $1,499. The new 15-inch MacBook Pro is available in two models: one with a 2.0 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, AMD Radeon HD 6490M and 500GB hard drive starting at $1,799 and one with a 2.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, AMD Radeon HD 6750M and 750GB hard drive starting at $2,199. The new 17-inch MacBook Pro features a 2.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, AMD Radeon HD 6750M and 750GB hard drive and is priced at $2,499.

The new MacBook Pros are currently available for purchase on Apple.com, as well as in stores.

I am grateful - and count my blessings that I/we have multiple MACs in this house, nary a PC in sight. I am over PCs - MAC rules the computing work, the OS is simply better and their hardware, the box is beyond compare... Windows will never catch up or be in the same league... EVER

I am permanently OVER the PC thing....

Apple never fails to disappoint me, my only complaint is that there isn't Blue Ray still (especially for someone who is ceo of Pixar ) which upsets me. And Idk of any comapny thats uses thunderbolt...Lame. But still a wonderful Product and will be getting one of course, And Then will Also be loading my Arsenal with the Spectacular iPad 2.

I'd like to get a MacBook one day, but my Thinkpad will not die (no matter what I put it through). :)
09:39 PM on 02/27/2011
I've got an old Thinkpad, about an inch thick, but I'd love to keep it in service.
Here's the problem (if anyone can help, the last time I worked on this was last Summer, so I might have forgotten some details!)
The floppy quit working, and I need the floppy for some old legacy industrial equipment. The laptop was free, so I'd love to fix it free too. I tried cleaning the floppy but it's beyond a dirty head issue.
No problem. It has a USB port, I'll just use a USB floppy drive!
no, I have WinNT on it. No USB
ok, I'll upgrade to Win2k. So I tried, but it kept quitting. I found that I needed to do a firmware upgrade. Unfortunately, the upgrade requires....the FLOPPY.
So, I'm in a bit of a loop. More pressing issues!

Are you really admitting that the lack of a floppy disk is preventing you from upgrading your BIOS?
11:40 AM on 02/27/2011
So if you want the power and flexibility building your own lap/desktop affords, but you're used to OSX.....why can't you just buy a copy of OSX with the money you save and run it on your PC?
12:50 PM on 02/27/2011
Jobs won't let you, they are in the market for selling hardware. I would have bought a copy of OS X long ago if Mr. Jobs would allow it and not insisted on bundling it with the hardware.
01:18 PM on 02/27/2011
ok, so suppose they sell the OS without that restriction.
You bring it home to put on your new AMD box with USB3 and eSATA.
You have a collection of problems with the install and running it.
Who do you call?
Who pays for the call?
Who pays for the person on the other end of the line?
Not to mention the piracy that would happen!
There's plenty of people here breaking the law and making Hackintoshes anyway. You think they will bother to buy a separate copy of the OS for each install? pffft!
Besides, it's not like Mr Jobs is alone in this business plan.
Suppose I made a box that will play Wii, Xbox, and Playstation games, all in one box.
One box, one set of controllers all USB, playing all 3 game stations.
2 questions.
How many of these companies would send legal letters? 1, 2, or 3
Would those letters just be to discuss paying MS, Sony, and Nintendo license fees?

I read a lot of anti-apple comments here. Especially ones that slurred them as "shiny, pretty fashion statements". So, I thought I would look at the Alienware laptops that are well regarded, and boy, was I surprised to see this description, right from the Dell website:

"Power isn’t only on the inside of the Alienware M17x. Protect your world with Alienware’s all-new, anodized aluminum case design with aggressive lines and in-your-face attitude that can manage your thermals and look good doing it. And you can personalize your machine with a choice of two color options: Metallic Silver or Metallic Black."

Aggressive lines? in your face attitude? Color options? look good ?
Hey wait a minute! I thought we were supposed to be moving AWAY from that kind of thinking if we would just leave Apple?

Only Cultists like yourself view comments that don't shout about the superiority of Macs as "anti-Apple." Get over it. :)
03:08 PM on 02/27/2011
change the subject?
For years Apple products have been belittled as shiny fashion objects, yet, looking into the Alienware (for one example) it seems so many other products WANT to be considered as "bright shiny fashion statements".
So, it's time to just consider those statements as what they are. jealousy.

Thunderbolt is cool tech, but for several reasons will not be a winner compared to USB3 plus HDMI.

They'll be winners when they need to connect to a projector in a conference room and don't have a dongle with them because the projector has hdmi, dvi, and vga ports?  They'll be winners when they have maybe a tenth of the choices in monitors and peripherals?  They'll be winners when they need to move their monitor and their hard disk drops because it was later in the daisy chain?

"Thunderbolt is cool tech, but for several reasons will not be a winner compared to USB3 plus HDMI."

I totally agree with you. And Apple putting Thunderbolt and USB 2.0 ports on their new MBP's are IMHO making a huge mistake. But then again, you can be sure that Apple fanbois will tell you that USB 2.0 is better than USB 3.0. Just like they're now saying that DVD is better than Blu-Ray... ;) Apple is indeed a religion.
05:06 PM on 02/27/2011
no, there's still plenty of need for Dedicated USB ports, but instead of getting into these games other manufacturers get into where you need 3 or 4 USB ports, some eSATA, a Firewire port, an HDMI port, ethernet, and a card port, in case there's anything else they forgot to include, You'll only really need Thunderbolt to connect to most of these ports I just listed. That's fewer ports in the laptop, fewerholes in the chasis, fewer chips to drain power, generate heat, etc.
Right now USB is too pervasive to not have it's own dedicated ports, or force people to buy adapters from Thunderbolt to USB. That will be the way to go to USB3 devices though. Also, some portable drives need 2 USB ports, one just for power. So, they're there.
Not sure I understand your problem with offering USB ports on the current mbp?
If they didn't , I can almost hear your shrill complaints of S Jobs forcing Thunderbolt down your throat. Am I close? When a person has a complaint about a thing, no matter what actions the person or company makes, what words describe such a person?

I don't understand how creatives make it in this world with only one platform. Even though Mac runs Windows, I maintain both machines. Mac is superior for print, but when I'm performing web-related tasks and my client is Windows-based, I need to make sure they will see what I want them to see.

Both, if you're serious about customer service and compatibility issues.

Why on earth would you say corporations don't use Macs? Sure they do.

I love my Macbook Pro (older one), but I was only able to afford it because I got it used on eBay. Otherwise, they are unaffordable. Steve Jobs needs his head examined when it comes to prices. And I have to admit, most of their "i" software totally sucks. I use as little of it as possible. Love the hardware though, but they are far from perfect. I would never in a million years buy a new Mac.

If you buy the right hardware, it's almost trivial to run OS X (the stock, vanilla version you can pick up at Best Buy) on a self-built Intel box that's 1/3 the price of an identical Mac.

No Mac fanboy here, but they do look enticing and the prices aren't unreasonable ... even after selecting the big options it comes in around 4k, Maybe laptop prices have dropped across the board since I last bought one 3 years ago?

You can buy a pretty darn good laptop for $600-$800.  Max it out for maybe a thousand.
12:45 PM on 02/25/2011
You can buy a Ferrari, or you can buy a Buick. Spec out a Windows laptop with the same specs as one of these, and you are looking at a $3000 Alienware that still runs crappy Windows OS, vulnerable to MalWare and virus'. I boot into Windows for gaming, and MacOS for everything else.
BTW, my MacBook's motherboard went out a year-and-a-half out of warranty. I went to the genius bar finally... the replaced the motherboard, replaced my lcd screen/lid/top of the laptop, and pulled out a dent I put in the front corner a year ago. No cost to me - thank you Apple! That's a brand!!

Yet again, another Cultist with the beloved car analogy. Nope, you aren't looking at a $3000 Alienware unit. These things are arguably marginally better than a number of the HP Envy units due to the processor at the moment, which you can snag for around $1500 that gets you a quadcore processor, a 17 inch screen, a significantly better GPU, 2 gigs more of the same clocked RAM, a Blue Ray Drive, eSata, VGA/HDMI/miniDisplayPorts, and USB 2 + 3.

You're paying more for a Buick while others are paying less for the Ferraris you think you own. :)
01:29 PM on 02/25/2011
I have both PC and MAC machines. Both are good in there own way. However, In my opinion Apple makes a superior product, it doesn't make me a Cultist. All the PC fanboys call MAC buyers Cultists and fail to recognize the fact that PCs still own a 94% market share since windows cared more about making money than the people using their machines. PCs require constant maintenance and while thats not a problem for a computer person like myself the average user gets and average of 2-3 years out of there PC, while my G5 tower has been running perfectly fine with no maintenance for 10 years.

Ready your posts and like a true PC cultist you just have no clue what you are talking back. My Hp laptop I use has better "stats" than my wifes Macbook Pro 17 and her Mac Roflstomps my HP in to the ground. It runs smoother side by side using the exact same programs and it has a better display. I don't care what you think you know the proof is in the pudding and always will be. Soon as my hp craptop dies Im buying a new Macbook Pro. But hey you do what you want and use whatever it is that makes YOU happy. Those of us that own Apple gear are happy with it because we actually use it and actually KNOW how it works. You like PC's and or Android....all you buddy. I personally love IOS and OSX. Its just plain hard to argue with someone who has both and knows the pros and cons of both. So please don't even try.

Alienware? Gamers don't buy Macs. And besides Alienware runs circles around Macs. In your analogy, Mac is the Buick. Sucker.
09:38 AM on 02/27/2011
Glad to hear it. So many people criticize Macs and iPhones as "toys".
I'm a bit confused actually.
Is being a "toy" good or bad, or being a platform for Gamers, good or bad?
Or is it really about whether "Apple" is associated with it?

Pointless comments. This is about the matter of personal choice and actual need.

All personal computing devices are designed to become "feature obsolete" in less than four years and some utilize better components and superior manufacturing methods which allow those machines to last longer.

Mr. Jobs and his company have given the world a choice. He will be missed.

Yep I thought so too until I bought one. After you use them you understand. Not all laptops work the same. Not all laptops use the same OS. Macbooks just work better. Ill put a new Macbook Pro 17 against anything you have out there from any manufacturer and the macbook Pro will work better longer. It's just that simple.

I'm thrilled. My MacBook Pro is 8 years old. Still works great (certainly slow by today's standards); it's finally time to upgrade. I was waiting for this update.

I went through a Toshiba (screen loosened, housing split apart, and motherboard fried), and multiple three HP's (two issues with the plug the power cord plugs in to thats hardwired to the motherboard cracking and the powercord having to be taped in. They changed the design in the hp I have now, and one the motherboard fried when it decided on its own to updated while laying on a bed and was unable to breath properly). My wifes Macbook pro has a far superior aluminum case and never ever even gets more than warm. My current hp will fry your leg if you use it in bed. Im delicate with my laptops. No drops. I buy good cases. The hardes surface they sit on is my usb powered fan cooled targa cool pad. I can only say this. You can't experience it simply by reading my words. Apple makes a FAR superior product. The only way to know it is to own one or use one for a period of time. You wanna call me a fanboy. Ill tell ya hell yes I am.
