'30 Rock': TGS Hates Women (VIDEO)

First Posted: 02/25/11 10:53 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:35 PM ET

Remember when a blog accused "The Daily Show" of having a "woman problem"? And remember when SXSW booked a comedy lineup that had only one female comedian out of 30 on it? Ok, that just happened. But what also just happened is a very special episode of "30 Rock," wherein Liz Lemon is forced to confront sexism at TGS, as well as her own "hatred" of women. The story line may not be ripped from the headlines, but it's definitely the right episode at the right time.

After feminist comedy blog, JoanofSnark.com, accuses TGS of hating women -- supporting evidence for which is supplied by a montage of an all-Jenna episode where powerful women are hobbled by getting their periods -- Liz decides to prove her detractors wrong by hiring a hot up-and-coming female comedian as a guest writer. Unfortunately, as is usually the case, Liz's good intentions end up looking a lot more hateful than she intended.

You are feminist 17-49 years old after that reality sets in and you want a husband.

Why is The Daily Show referred to not once, but thrice as TGS?

Jenna as Hillary C. at a press conference: "Oh my god...my period! Let's nuke England!" OK I thought that was hilarious.

Backstory: I was at the dedication of the Eleanor Roosevelt statue pictured. The real Hillary was there and received cheers; Rudy Giuliani was also there and received boos - I noticed he had the same hunched shoulders as Nixon. Well of course it's fascinating, that's why I included it.

I'm sorry, but pretty people can't be funny. Good-looking people, yes, but not gorgeous people. They've had everything handed to them all their lives because of their looks. Comedy comes from struggle!

Jon Hamm can be funny when he wants to be and so can Nathan Fillion. I have it on good authority that both of them are gorgeous.

Comedy comes from timing and even pretty people can struggle.

It's funny because in real life TDS hired Olivia Munn, and now she is stinking up the show whenever she comes on.

There is a huge difference when someone is a "token" hire for their looks rather than talent.....Munn is Exhibit A.

HuffPost missed the actual story here -- this episode was a huge middle finger to all the "feminist" ranting against 30 Rock and Tina Fey herself as being insufficiently feminist that she is always getting in the blogosphere.

And it was on point and funny as hell, too.

Agreed.  I seem to remember the goal of feminism being that women shouldn't be criticized or condemned for doing whatever it is they do, even if that includes being overtly sexual for its own sake.

I love 30 Rock.
I suppose you all know Sarah Palin is not a real person but a character played by Tina Fey.
The woman is a genius!

Sorry Tina.
You have officially Jumped the Shark with that episode.
Weakest entry in a weak season.
